Sheriff's authorities last week identified a body recently recovered along the Little North Fork as that of a 22-year-old Stayton man reported missing and presumed drowned after rescuing a woman struggling in the water last May, officials said.
Stephen Shaver disappeared May 15 after he pulled to safety a 19-year-old woman who slipped into the river after trying to retrieve a fallen flip-flop, his family said.
The body was reported found to the sheriff's office about 5 p.m. Jan. 10 along a riverbank in Lyons, said sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Sheila Lorance.
The family was notified last week that Shaver's body was recovered, said Sean Harp, Shaver's stepfather.
The family plans to hold a service Thursday in Sublimity. A memorial fund also has been established for Shaver's son, Ayden, now 5.
Shaver served in the Marines for four years and was stationed in Washington, D.C., after he joined when he was 17, said his mother, Kimberly Harp. Shaver attended Santiam High School.
Kimberly Harp said that Jan. 9, the day before her son's body was reported found, her daughter took Ayden to the riverbank where Shaver had disappeared.
Kimberly Harp said her daughter gave Ayden three coins to toss into the water as wishes.
His first wish? For his Daddy to come back, Kimberly Harp said.
"I had chills everywhere," she said, upon hearing the story.
