I put in a new avatar of our new kitties for you cat lovers to admire. We took in a stray Nov. 19, and guess what? She was pregnant, but even the vet couldn't tell for sure. She had these two on Dec. 17 around 2 a.m. The runt is Tiny Tim, and the big one is Toby Tiger. Tiny Tim didn't have strength to nurse the first two days, so I had to give him kitten milk. Claudia, the mom, is a very small tabby and young (probably just over a year). I suppose that is why she had just two. We brought the kittens to the vet yesterday, and TT weighs .07 and Toby weighs .15#. He is a butterball (eating for three I think, the other kittens Claudia didn't have).

They are lovely babies! I also would like to compliment you on your name choices... Toby Tiger & Tiny Tim are precious names! The mom's name isn't bad, either!!! :22wink:

It makes you so much more attached to your pets when you rescue them, doesn't it? Imagine what would have happened had you not taken the mother in. Just awful. It's nice to hear about others that don't just turn their heads to animals in need.

Claudia, I really like your name. A funny thing about Toby Tiger, I just had that name in my mind when I named him and didn't remember we had a poster by that name until afterwards. I hope our poster, Toby Tiger, likes cats, too.

Yes, that's Tiny Tim. He is doing ok. The vet pronounced him healthy. I'm so glad. He is a "special needs" kitty though, because he was born with only a right eye. I am so praying that is his only defect. He is such a darling. They are 18 days old today.

Thank you, Noah, it takes one to know one. They get to start on kitten mush Monday; won't that be fun (and messy)? Toby has teeth. I just found out today. Tiny Tim's are about ready to come out; I can feel them through his gums. This is the first time I've raised kittens from the first day they were born, so it has been a learning experience, but lots of fun. The DrsFosterandSmith website has a lot of good information.

Thank you and congratulations for taking care of those in need.

I always order thru Drs. Foster & Smith - they really stand behind their products and have tons of info. PLUS - you can call them and they'll help with any question, no matter how small.

Ohhhh - kitten mush. That's fun. You might want to try getting a small baby bottle with a criss-cross nipple for the wee one. He'll eat more that way. I think it feels more natural to them. Unless he's too small - do you think the nipple would be too big for him? Would a doll bottle work?

I know those babies are in good hands........:1222423:

Noah, I got a kitten bottle for him when I got the kitten formula, and he would not suck on it. It was a terrible ordeal. I told the vet when I went in to pick up medicine for another cat. He gave me a little syringe, and that is what I've been using. Tiny Tim still hollers and kicks all four feet when I feed him. I was kind of hoping he might take to the kitten mush. I will update.

Awww.....poor little guy wouldn't take the bottle? Syringes work well, too.

I used to get syringes from our pharmacy. My pharmacist knew I was using them cuz I fostered itty bitty baby kitties and would give them to me. One day there was another pharmacist there and he looked at me like I was a lunatic and wouldn't give them to me. :71541:

Will he lick the mush off your finger? If he's kickin' and hollerin', then I guess he's getting stronger.

What about baby food? Did your vet say that was ok?

It really is a full-time job, isn't it? :faintTHUD:

The babies I rescued from the side of the road wouldn't take a bottle, either. I had to syringe feed them, it worked very well. It is more than a full time job, but the payoff is immeasurable!!!

Noah, my first experiments with mush didn't go too well today. They walked in it and I tried putting their faces in it. They didn't seem to recognize as food. I even tried putting some in their mouths with my finger. They were not impressed. My husband thinks I should wait a while. The web site said 21 days, which they are. Claudia thought the kitten mush was pretty good though. http://bestsmileys.com/cats1/9.gif

My second attempt didn't go much better, and no, they aren't licking their feet. I had to clean them off. I supposed Mom took care of the rest. I think I will wait a few more days before trying again. Tiny Tim still gets his 3-times a day supplement, so he is doing ok, and Toby is tubby. Actually, I'm not putting in a huge amount of time. Momma Claudia is taking care of them well. They are getting so they want to explore now though. When I came down here to the office, Toby was sitting on the pillow I have by their cubby hole (that's to break their fall if they come out), and Tim was nursing on Mama outside on the floor. I told DH we have to watch our feet at all times now, since we don't know where the little tykes will end up.

Yes, Toby, the black one. He is tiger striped, but is mostly black. He is started to play now, tackling and biting poor little Tiny Tim. He outweighs him by twice. I feel like I have to rescue Tim, LOL. I guess he will manage though; he's growing, too. They are both exploring. We had to put a barrier by their area tonight, because we are afraid they will wander too far. Toby Tiger is finally walking really good.

There is nothing else to do, Love. If I'd taken her to the shelter, I would never know what happened to her. I've managed to find homes for five strays in the years we've lived in this neighborhood (one we kept). My husband loves Claudia, so I think she will stay. Tiny Tim is the love of my life right now, so I want to keep him. I might consider adopting Toby Tiger to a good home. We will see when the time comes. It's a full house here indeed.

Good to see that they're growing up and starting to play with each other. I have a brown tabby/white rescue who is now approximately 10-1/2 months old (have had him since the end of August) and he thinks my almost five year old black female is his mother and/or play toy, depending on his mood. Fortunately for him she's good natured.

Yes, Toby Tiger, she is playing with them and they are playing with each other. Both the kittens love to bite our fingers now. You'd think at least Toby could figure out how to eat with those teeth, but I tried him again today, and he still doesn't get it. Mom ate all the food. She thought it was great. LOL They are both purring, learning to groom, so I'm sure the eating part will come soon. I will have to ask my neighbor to take more photos of them soon, as I don't have a digital camera. They are both growing well. I had my husband put up an enclosure around their area, because they are walking so well now and wanting to explore. We let them out to walk around at least once a day. They will be a month old on Monday, so it won't be long until they are running all over the house.

I think I'm too old for another experience like this, but I'll admit I am enjoying every moment.

My DH told me a great story when I got up today. Toby Tiger was racing all by himself in their little enclosure. Ken said he would run to one end, turn around and run back to the other end. I guess he had some energy he had to get rid of. Tiny Tim has finally learned how to drink out of the nipple on the kitten bottle! He's getting more down before he starts squealing, so I guess that means he's hungrier. He is growing well, just needs a little weight on him. They are a month old tomorrow. I am hoping I can get them to recognize kitten food soon.

How adorable! I swear there aren't many things in this world cuter than kittens!
So glad your babies are doing well!

A couple of days ago, Toby Tiger scaled the cardboard wall (big box my husband added to their little den) and got out. Claudia picked up Tiny Tim and got him out, too. I think she felt the area was a little cramped for her, as she likes to lie straight out on the floor or couch. So we let them camp out on the couch (this is in our library/family room) for two nights. The kittens have had great fun running up and down the couch, climbing the back (that's mostly Toby) and running on the back of the couch.

I went to check on them when I got up today, and Toby was sleeping in the original kitten den. Tiny Tim was no where to be seen. I was almost having a heart attack looking for him. I asked Claudia, "Where's your baby?" She wasn't much help. I looked around all the furniture (DH had already kitten proofed so they couldn't get under), looked in the kitchen and as far as the living room. Palpitating heart. I finally got the idea to look under the cover on the couch. There was Tiny Tim sleeping peacefully. Wow, was that a workout. He didn't even make a lump in the cover, he is so small. We will have to make absolutely sure where he is before we even sit down now.

So that's my update for now. Both doing well. Toby is having a grand time climbing, running, and playing. It will be no time before he is wanting to explore the other rooms. Tiny Tim is a bit behind because of his size, but he is smart. He even comes to me when he hears my voice.

animallady, Toby Tiger, and Claudia, thanks for your nice messages. You are welcome for the pm Toby. I just enjoy sharing my babies. I will try to get a new photo on here soon. I am not of the digital age yet and have to rely on someone else to get photos on my computer (yeah, I am really horse and buggy). We do have some really cute ones of them and mom under the Christmas tree.

Claudia, we have many, many pictures of our cats (including the two that passed last year). One friend of mine once said, "You have more pictures of your cats than I do of my kids." Well, they are our "kids" of course.

Cats like to be under things...like on a chair under the dining room table, under the tree, etc. It's also warm there with the tree lights on. Took the ornaments off but still have the lights on...makes the room warmer also.

Toby, they sure do like to be under things. Our Purrcy sleeps under our big hassock half the day.

My daughter and SIL were here last night. She thinks Toby Tiger is as big as an 8-week kitten (he's only 5). He is running, exploring, and jumping in a single bound from the hassock now. Tiny Tim is growing, but still very small. He can't jump that far yet. He had an absolutely hysterical attack when I was feeding him yesterday. There was kitten formula on me, him, even a drop on his head. I was about to quit feeding him, since he hates it so much, but I reconsidered today because I can still feel his ribs. He was better today. His mom was right there watching over him, and he was a bit not so upset. He is nursing well though which is good. He is usually quite mellow (except feeding time).

The two kittens fight and tumble and bite each other, all very normal, except Tim is at a disadvantage due to size. Toby Tiger also fights with his mother, and last night he jumped on Thomas (large Maine Coon cat) in his basket twice when he was in the livingroom. Thomas let out a yowl. It was all so funny. You almost have to be there to get the full impact, but I'm sure most know how much fun it is to watch kittens learn, play, and explore.

Messy indeed, but be glad, you have a mama cat to do your clean up on the kitten faces. These kittens and maybe even mom probably wouldn't have stood a chance if not for your intervention, Cat. Thanks for helpin' them out! Are you planning to keep any of them or are you looking for homes?

One of the foods I've used with small fosters and failure to thrives was Royal Canin's Baby Cat formula. It's teeny little kibbles that the smallest kittens can eat and it absorbs easily to make mush if they still need the food softened... it's not the only stuff you can use, it's just stuff I've had luck with. I also sprinkled the milk powder on it for a while with my little FIV+ I couldn't make grow there for a while (he's FIV- now and fat although he never got as big as he was supposed to) I think this food helped him survive whatever was ailing him!

There's also a KMR weaning formula at the pet stores that makes a gruel. Chicken baby food was another favorite but it made for smelly litter boxes!!

Have fun with them, Cat, and Congratulations! :hifive:

Gib, thanks for the compliment. I could NOT let an animal out in the cold or take it to the shelter. It's part of who I am.

We are keeping Claudia and Tiny Tim for sure. We have both fallen in love with Toby Tiger, also, so I don't know for sure. My daughter sort of mentioned she might take him. I'm not sure DH would want to let him go, but maybe to her. Claudia is a very temperamental cat, so I don't think anyone would want her. She is calming down a lot from when she first came though. I'm not sure if she was let go because of her temper or because whoever it was knew she was pregnant and didn't want to deal with it. Either way, it's horrific to think people can be so ignorant.

Thanks for the tips about kitten food. They haven't got the idea yet. We're still working on that one. Mama cat is very obliging with the milk bar.

I enjoyed your pictures of your precious dogs. We pet people are all alike, every piece of furniture has a cover. :girl_haha:

Hey, Toby Tiger! Red letter day yesterday. Toby ate his first kitten food on his own out of his mother's dish. I put down a dish for the kittens, but he was eating out of Mom's again today. I guess it tastes better from Mom's dish. He has discovered the cat basket behind my chair in the livingroom, and when he is done climbing, exploring, and chasing, he sleeps in there now. He has not figured out litter box, yet, but we're taking it a day at a time.

Tiny Tim is getting around very well, even though he is obviously weeks behind his big brother. He was exploring today, also. He can run pretty fast. He's great at climbing furniture, too. I think he's got it about the growing (or else the exercise is helping) because he drank his bottle this evening without yelling at me (big smile).

There are also training litters out there for this purpose, but usually Mom will teach them how it's done... it's easier if they're in a small enough space to easily find the box or if there are a ton of boxes to choose from at first.

There's another high calorie supplement called enervite or energel... I can't remember what it is for cats, but it looks like hair ball remedy. Some of my fosters loved it.. I had a handful that didn't though... when you can get it in them, it's great stuff!

I'm so glad these guys are really starting to thrive for you! And I'm extra thrilled that all three of these formerly homeless and unwanted animals are going to stay with you or in the family for you to love and watch grow... that's too cool, Cat.:zm10:

When we have itty bitty rescue kittens, we put them in the kitty litter box and show them how to dig. We hold their front paws, dig dig dig.

Repeat as needed....until they "get it".

Good luck!!

Aw, gibbrish, you and everyone who's responded have been so nice. I don't feel like we did a great thing, because I am enjoying this experience so much. I have never fostered kittens before, although I had thought of it. It just seemed too much with 5 cats in the house. Then, we lost two last year, and had the three boys. That didn't last long. I swear Samantha and Tabitha sent these to us to love. They knew how much we missed them and still do.

I really think Tiny Tim is going to do all right just with the kitten milk. He's growing, and he can run and climb so fast. It's amazing, like watching a little windup toy on the floor.

I think Toby may have tried the litter box today, but not sure. Also, he ate canned tuna cat food today. He loved that. I had my DH get a can for a treat when he went out today. Usually they just have hard food because of their teeth. Everyone was very, very happy.

I used to foster kittens from the animal shelter, but had a hard time giving them back. I had to stop doing that cuz I was suspicious of anyone who wanted to adopt them. Are they good enough for MY kitty? Will they make MY kitty stay outside? Will they hurt MY kitty? You get the picture. :1187603408.CR.Mothe

Now we rescue them from the drainage ditches. We get a lot of cats dropped off in our area. It's wooded, so people think they'll be safe there. On the contrary - it's very dangerous, especially for pregnant cats and their newborns. Most of the newborns get snatched or killed by predators.

Animallady, I think he is standing up or maybe half standing up. You should see him run now. Yes, the markings are beautiful on Tiny. He has two on his shoulders that are like cheetah spots. Years ago, we raised some little turtles from hatchlings and even they had different personalities. People who have never had turtles probably wouldn't believe that, but it's true. Two of them survive at a wildlife center out in the country (we donated them).

Tiny is growing well. Claudia is in heat and not paying much attention to the two anymore (she has an appointment for spaying next month). Tiny Tim is positively gobbling his kitten formula now. He cries until I get it for him. I can't wait until he recognizes hard food though. I don't mind feeding him at all, but sometimes we have to be gone for most of the day, so it would be better for him if he could eat on his own.

I've always had mine spayed before that problem arises so no expert here, however she should be able to have the surgery then...as long as she's kept away from male cats in the meantime.

Our males are all neutered. I am a BIG advocate of neutering and spaying. Poor Purrcy was trying to help her out when she first went into heat, but he didn't know what to do exactly (being a virgin). :girl_haha: Claudia is out of heat for now; I wish it would last until her surgery, but I'm pretty sure that won't happen.

Toby was very shy and hid under the furniture at first, they told me, but Tiny Tim was happy with being held and sitting on laps. Everyone in the congregation passed them around, too, so it was a big day for them. Naturally, they were the hit of the morning. They are 7 weeks old tomorrow.

Poor Purrcy was trying to help her out when she first went into heat, but he didn't know what to do exactly (being a virgin). :girl_haha: Claudia is out of heat for now; I wish it would last until her surgery, but I'm pretty sure that won't happen.
She shouldn't again before Feb. 18, or did you have to cancel that appointment?

I took our two boys to church today, and they spent the hour with the youth group. Toby was very shy and hid under the furniture at first, they told me, but Tiny Tim was happy with being held and sitting on laps. Everyone in the congregation passed them around, too, so it was a big day for them. Naturally, they were the hit of the morning. They are 7 weeks old tomorrow.

Ahhhhhh....that's special!

Good that they got a trip in the car. Mine love it.

Happy 7-weeks birthday guys!

Thanks, Toby Tiger. Who knew your namesake would be so shy and skittish? He is such a big boy, too. I'm almost sure he must be over 2# by now. I don't think they cared for the car ride that much, even though they were in the carrier most of the time. I have a couple of big boys who absolutely HATE car rides.

I have one (tabby female) who would react the same way he did. She hides whenever anyone comes over to the house, whereas my black female will come to the door to greet the visitor. Both of them ride in the car without any problems...don't even need a carrier. The male kitten however hasn't been for a ride without one since he'd be all over my lap.

Hi Toby Tiger. I have been busy with some trials, but I have been thinking of updating for the last few days.

Toby is absolutely the biggest kitten I've ever seen at almost two months. I call him my teddy bear. Tiny Tim is about twice the size he was a few weeks ago. He makes a little pig of himself with his bottles, but still does not want anything to do with kitten food. He is finally using the litter box (mostly after we put him in it). He is very smart with most stuff, but I guess he will not eat "real food" until he's darn good and ready. I even tried him with chicken baby food, as one of the posters suggested. He didn't like that either. I ended up giving the rest to the big cats and Toby on a plate. They like anything with chicken or meat.

They are going just about every minute when they are awake, wrestling, climbing, jumping, playing with toys. Our livingroom looks like a big playpen. My husband just brought our new set of photos, and there are some great ones. I will try to get someone to scan them soon, so I can share.

Thanks for the update! Sounds like my namesake is going to be a big tiger!! Glad to hear that Tiny is finally growing also. You're right, he'll eat what he wants to, when he wants it.
:love0085:

Don't expect your house to ever be the same. Stuffed mice and other cat toys are littered all over my floors also, on the stairs, sofa, etc. At least the Christmas ornaments were left alone however, as well as other things that aren't intended for cats to play with.

Yes, he is. I believe he will be as big as his mom by six months or before. She is a slim, delicate build. By a year, he will probably be a whopper.

Speaking of cat food, Tiny Tim was playing with a piece of it on the kitchen floor last night. DH said, "Well, he's getting closer."

When Purrcy came to our house (about 5 1/2 years ago), he was almost a year, but still all kitten. We went through the same thing then. He was so funny though, we enjoyed it all (except when he broke a couple of my husband's ornamental things). He was so sweet you couldn't stay mad at him though. He hasn't changed a bit, except for growing absolutely huge. He is so good with the kittens. They sleep with all the big cats (one at a time). My neighbor has some of the new photos, so I'm hoping he scans them tonight. Cross your fingers.

Playing with food seems to be a common trait. My youngest one, who is now 10-1/2 months old, likes to take the dry food out of the dish and play with it on the kitchen floor. He's also discovered he likes to go out to the back yard with another cat who adopted my house about two years ago. However he's still too much of a baby to leave him out there at night.

None of ours get to go out. They have nice windows for bird watching though. I lost an indoor/outdoor cat years ago (one of my favorites). It's just too dangerous out there. Also, I don't have to worry about flea treatment.

LOL, our Pumpkin, when he was about a year old liked to rush at the food dishes (bowling for cat food) and watch it fly all over. He got in so much trouble, he decided it was better not to do that again after a few times.

Of my four cats, one never goes outside. She doesn't even want to, having been disposed of inside a box in a trash dumpster when she was a baby. My other indoor cat only goes outside with supervision. The one who adopted my yard did come indoors during the winter, however is better suited to being outside now that the weather is warmer. The baby was an outdoor kitten until last fall when I adopted him, but his energy level tends to annoy the two ladies who are inside...so he's outside for "play time". If I find him outside the fenced yard, he'll be back indoors!

Tiny Tim ate kitten mush last night for the first time. I am so relieved. He was chewing all the plastic points off the bottles I was using. He destroyed the nipple on the kitten bottle weeks ago. He ate it again today (twice). I sprinkled some whole kitten food bits in with the mush and he ate those, too. It's probably confusing to the babies why they can't go to their mother anymore...but they're also growing up and need to be weaned off her. The evaporated milk is a good idea and shouldn't hurt them.

Sorry, Toby Tiger. Let me see what is noteworthy. The kittens are go, go, going all the time until they drop. They are getting quite independent. I have to get them in a really sleepy mood before I can hold them. They aren't even three months old yet, and think they are grown up and can take care of themselves. :girl_haha: Toby and Tiny still sneak some food from Mom's lunch bar once in a while, but I guess she doesn't mind. She has healed up fine and gets her stitches out Tuesday. The sons get their shots on the same day. I will let you know how much they weigh. I can't wait to see how much Tiny Tim has gained. He still is skinny, except for a big tummy (because he loves to eat); I think he's just in a growth spurt. Toby Tiger probably weighs about 2 1/2#.

Last night, I went to bed and soon felt a wigggling little thing under the covers. It was Tiny Tim. He sneaked in when I had the door open. I got him to settle down after a while, and he slept with us until 8:30 a.m. He may turn out to be a good bed kitty.

Ahhhhhhh.....that is all very noteworthy! Thanks!

It will be interesting to know how much they weigh now. I like the story of Tiny getting in the bed. Most nights I have the same thing happen only on top of the bedding and/or pillows.

I'm still not quite sure if my little one thinks my black cat is his mother or what...but last night she was curled up on the bedroom floor and he got on top of her putting his paws around her neck and proceeded to bathe her head. This afternoon he's outside and she's indoors meowing as if looking for him. My other indoor cat (the striped one) doesn't interact with him that much except when he chases her around the house, but he's sure bonded with the black one.

I once had one like him...huge white male with tabby spots. Adopted him as an adult when someone took him into the vet's office wanting him euthanized because he was roaming around their yard or some such criminal offense. He was a very special cat...or should I say purr-son.

The babies probably should be eating kitten food for a while longer...however I can see your problem keeping them separated from the adults at feeding time. I just leave dry food out 24/7 so they can graze whenever they're hungry and only give them the moist food in the morning and evening.

Yes, the criminals (in my view) are the ones that don't do anything for stray cats. That's another whole story. I guess huge cats are more laid back.

I know they should probably be eating kitten food, but I get tired of taking them away from the big cat dishes and putting them in front of their own. I guess it will sort itself out.

Oh, one more thing I forgot to relate: Toby Tiger has decided he LOVES my bath tub. He plays in there several times a day, since his mom showed it to him. He went in after my shower today and was in there quite a while. He seems to love water (very uncatlike). I sometimes pick him up, and his paws are wet from playing in the water dishes. :rolleye0001:

Just a thought...is the kitten food dry or moist? If it's dry, try mixing it in with the adults' dry food. That should make them all happy.
:D

My namesake isn't the only cat who likes water. My black one and the baby are both fascinated by it. She'll even try to get inside the tub/shower when I'm in it. I have a garden window in the kitchen behind the sink and the baby will sit there whenever I'm running water in the sink. He also wants to play with ice cubes and now when I let him out in the back yard he's discovered he likes to dip his paws in the swimming pool. Several others I've had also did the same thing with the pool, including thinking it is a big water bowl to drink out of.

So you have some water cats, too? Swimming pool, :1187603408.CR.Mothe, all we have is snow and ice. But it's supposed to get to 39 tomorrow.

Not rich here either...that's why mine only get the moist food twice a day since they only want one specific kind of moist food (Whiskas) and it's not cheap.

Hey, I'll trade you the pool and the hot summer weather (it'll be in the 90s and above 100 from June through September) for the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field and season tickets!

This was trip to the vet day. Claudia got her stitches out and was pronounced completely healed. Tiny Tim is now 2# 2 oz. He has really grown. Toby Tiger is (TA-DA!) 4# 2 oz. The lady who weighed him said "He broke the curve." At 2 1/2 months old, I think he's the biggest kitten they've ever seen. They got their first distemper shot, also. Tiny was extremely feisty and didn't like the procedures he went through at all. Toby Tiger was quite laid back and "mature." That's what the doc called him. :girl_haha: Claudia liked the doctor. She rubbed on his legs and laid on the floor with her tummy up.

Yes, that must be it, he thinks he's a real tiger. His nickname is Trouble right now. He is getting into everything. The lady at the vet said, "the terrible twos." In "The Christmas Carol," Tiny Tim grew up to be big and strong. I wonder what they called him then. I have one concern with Tim, his heart beats very fast even at rest. The doctor says not to worry about it now, see how it is when he is a year old. Claudia is getting much sweeter. You are right, she just had to experience unconditional acceptance and love.

I went through that with my baby...now that I'm allowing him outside when I'm home he's ready to sleep when he comes indoors! Good thing you asked the vet about Tim's heart rate; it probably will slow down as he grows. Claudia also will become a good pet now that she's been spayed and has all the food she needs.

I wouldn't worry about the fast heart rate, Cat. When I brought home 2 little boy kitties, one of them had a real fast heart rate, too.

Turned out he was the hyper one that always stayed skinny (still is) and the other one was easy going and lazy. Rocky still only weighs 7 lbs and TJ weighed 13 lbs before he died. ( :1187603408.CR.Mothe )

Oh, Noah, I love him so much. We have that extra bond being as I was his surrogate mother. He has the longest, skinny legs, and a long tail. His mom is long-legged, too, and petite.

We love Toby Tiger to pieces, also, but he is a rabble rouser. He has learned how to unroll the toilet paper in my bathroom now. I guess I have to take it off the roll, because it is right above a litter box with cover. He just sits on the cover and goes to work on it.

Ok, this is just too adorable not to share. I sometimes take Tiny Tim to bed with me for a while. He sleeps between me and a little tube pillow. He sometimes stays there for hours and hours, which surprises me. Tonight he went in the bedroom, and I saw him go under the bed. Later, when I was looking for him, I went to check the bedroom and there he was curled in a little ball sleeping just below the big pillows in the bed. My DH went in and said, "Did you put him in there like that? He looks posed." He was still in there when Ken went to bed. I guess he thinks this is where his big mama wants him.

Thanks, animallady. Actually, the most snuggly one lately has been Toby. He is like a small teddy bear, fits in my arm so nice. Tiny Tim is asserting his independence and runs as fast as he can when he senses I want to pick him up. He has long legs and can gallop like a tiny pony.

Well, that is good. I thought lilies were poisonous to cats. Am I wrong? I sure hope he doesn't try to nibble on it. I only have an aloe plant at this time, gave up having plants many years ago, because Pumpkin liked to eat them. Claudia nibbles the aloe now and then, but it's probably good for her digestive system.

I know poinsettias are to be kept away from cats however not sure about the Easter lily. There is only one live plant in the house. It was my mother's...the plant is about 20 years old. He sometimes gets dry leaves off it just to carry downstairs and play with. Can't think of the name of it but it has multicolored, rather large, hard leaves.

I thought I would revive my thread today. Our cat family is doing fine. The kittens are 4 months old now. They have their next visit to the vet on Tuesday, so I will post their weights then. I cannot believe how long Tiny Tim's legs are. It seems his body hasn't quite grown into them yet. T Tim purrs all the time. All we have to do is touch him to set him off, just like his mom. Toby Tiger, on the other hand, hardly ever purrs. I have heard him purr exactly twice in four months. He seems very happy and content, however. I was beginning to think he somehow was born without a purr mechanism. I never heard him until a few weeks ago. He was with his mother; I guess he saves most of his purring for her.

Both boys have become very nice little bed kitties. I can bring Toby in at night, and he will sleep with us until early morning. Tiny Tim recently stayed overnight a few times, too. Today I found them curled up on the bed sleeping together, and their mom was at the end of the bed.

It is strange, but Toby didn't gain any weight; he must be using more calories than he's eating. The vet said, "Are you trying to let your brother catch up with you?" AND, they told us 4# 2 oz. last time. It was a mistake, and it is actually .02 oz., so a little bit lighter than we thought. Tiny Tim is now 2# 10 oz., so he gained 8 oz. They are both have a clean bill of health and got their other distemper shot. True to form, Tiny Tim was belligerent with the vet (he has quite a temper), but Toby Tiger was timid and calm. They sure are different in that respect. I guess Tim figures he had to fight for every breath at first, so he's going to remain a fighter.

Claudia seems to have gained a little, she seems a little rounder. We will have to try to weigh her some day, since she didn't have an appointment today.

Thanks for the news! That's my boy...ever generous to allow his brother to catch up with him! I would be curious how much Claudia weighs now...maybe you can get her on the home scale.

I have to take my three year old to the doctor this weekend to get her annual vaccinations. On 3/22, I wrote the kittens were four months old. Geez, I made a mistake; that was actually three months. They will be four months on the 7th. I really wasn't in a rush to make them grow up. I love them this size. Our livingroom was like a playpen this morning. They had toys everywhere; they even had some in the kitchen. It is sunshiney today, and that seems to activate them even more (although it's not necessary).

Toby Tiger, I hope your youngest checked out well at the vet. I think it's great he likes to ride in the car.

Thanks for your good wishes! Actually it was my three year old girl who I took to the doctor last weekend...and she weighed in at 16.9 lbs. Hi guys!

Not trying to hijack your thread, but I have a cat question, and since there are cat people here, I thought it'd be a good place to start.

I have a cat, Naboo who is about 8 yrs old. For the past several years, he has been pulling out his hair in clumps. All down his back, it's very thin with a few spots where I can see his skin. I figured it was a nervous condition. This is the most insane cat I have ever met. He is terrified of everything. He gets obsessive about me & will follow me everywhere & if I sit, he is in my face and will not go away. I have no idea why he is this way, he was raised exactly the same as my others, who are normal & well-adjusted. He was put out of a car in the middle of a busy parking lot when he was tiny, I saw the girl do it & immediately went & grabbed him up. He wasn't on the streets or anything like that. There is no reason for his craziness - it just is. SO - do you guys think nervousness? If not, what else could it be? He has no fleas. He is an indoor cat, although he goes out on occasion, but only if I am outside too.

TIA!

:mornincoffee: Good Morning Claudia,

I just read about Naboo; poor baby. He could have an allergy to something; food or a flea-control product.

I adopted my Petunia when she was seven weeks, and she was in good health. Almost. I had noticed a tiny bald spot on one of her front legs and another one just above the brow area. The litter owner told me that the kittens played a bit rough with each other and all of them had little battle wounds. When I took her to the vet for shots and a check-over I learned that she had ringworm. She sucked the place on her leg constantly, and I had to use an oral Rx instead of the topical.

The point to my long-winded story is that she sucked that same place on her leg until the day she died - 21 years later. I guess it was a nervous tic or habit; maybe implanted on her psyche when she was a kitten. I asked her vet about it once and he had no idea. Did Naboo have behaviour when you rescued him or did it start later? Wish they could speak human-talk!

I thought about an allergy, but it doesn't get better or worse when I change anything. If I had to associate it to anything, it would be the weather. He does it more in the winter than summer. There's not a lot of difference, but it does seem slightly better in the warmer months. Right now, the hair is thin down his whole back, with a few bald spots here & there. He will sit and take huge mouthfuls of hair & rip them out. Weirdest thing I ever saw.

He's just such a weird cat. I can't even explain it on here - beyond anything I have ever dealt with. When I moved about a year ago, I started packing things up, and he disappeared. I couldn't find him anywhere, I was worried because I couldn't move away without finding him! After a couple days of searching everywhere, I finally found him. He was in the cabinet under the kitchen sink. He had opened the door & crawled in. You know, he didn't come out for over a week! I actually had to drag him out so I could take him to the new house. As soon as I stated packing stuff up, he went into hiding. We affectionately call him "Freak" or "Psycho". Don't get me wrong - I adore him, but he is crazy. :z0tdntknw:

Claudia, it does sound psychological to me. I had a friend once who had a cat who obsessively licked his tummy until he had it raw. She had to get an Elizabethan collar for him for a while. I wonder if putting him on Prozac would make a difference. I've heard it does for some obsessive behaviors. Maybe get an opinion from a different vet or animal behavioralist. Good luck!

Yeah, I figured it was psychological. He's not an unhappy cat, he loves me, and he plays with my female all the time, he's just half naked most of the time.

I haven't had him to the new vet I have been seeing, maybe I'll give it a try. Taking Naboo to the vet is quite an adventure - I avoid it whenever possible. :rolleye0001:

Thanks for all ya'lls help!

TIA!
I don't have an answer for you, however this site may be helpful:

They don't get one until they are a year old. :girl_haha: They got lots of hugs and kisses though.

You should see Toby's paws--he has the biggest paws of any kitten I have ever seen. He is going to be a big boy.

Toby Tiger, I don't have any new photos, daughter forgot to bring camera. I hate relying on someone else, but I can't get a new camera just yet. I tried weighing the brothers on our bathroom scale (in their little blue play basket), and I came up with 3# for Tiny Tim and 5# for Toby Tiger, so Tiny is trying to catch up. He finally is not always the bottom kitten when they are wrestling.

Tiny Tim is catching up! Great news, Cat! I've never had cats, but I could easily become a cat person (if the dogs wouldn't eat them,LOL). They're so darned cute!

How could I not be interested in everything they do...especially my namesake? As for the other idea, come summer I would LOVE to be where you are when it's too HOT here.
:D

Currently my black child is resting on the computer desk. At least she's not on the mouse pad as sometimes happens.

I have all that to look forward to TT. We are moving on Saturday, and my computer is finally going to be upstairs (instead of the basement). The one perk was that the cats weren't sleeping, typing, etc. on it. It will be interesting. I hope they decide to explore the rest of the house first. :girl_haha:

Yes, it's exciting. We don't have to worry about sitting or stepping on him accidentally anymore. He has become great at wrestling (just before I came down here, he tackled his mother). The matches between him and Toby are finally almost even. I am hoping to get more photos in the next week or so, but everything is chaos here right now (moving).

Cats are more of a challenge than dogs, I think, because they really have minds of their own. They only cuddle when they want to cuddle and are quite demanding. I think dogs are more malleable and want to please their owners. Cats don't give a darn.

Ahhh....you'll have fun then! Seriously, they don't even get near the computer desk when I'm not home. It's only when I'm sitting here and they want my attention and they know how to get it!

Hopefully everyone will enjoy the move to the new house!

Toby Tiger, it was a nightmare getting them into the carriers on Saturday. Your namesake had a fit, and I got multiple wounds. :girl_sad: I knew they were traumatized from being locked in the bedroom at the old house while the furniture was being moved. When I finally got them all to the new place, everyone hid under the bed for quite a while. The kittens were soon out exploring, playing in boxes, and doing what kittens do. The adult cats took several days to get used to the new place though (understandable). I had given Pumpkin (the oldest and the one I was most worried about) Dr. Goodpet formula for anxiety. That helped quite a bit. I gave some to Purrcy, too, but he was under the bed most of the first three days, except for necessary trips. Thomas did not respond well with the anxiety med, he was still howling up a storm (which he does when he's nervous), so I gave him some valerian root from a capsule and that calmed him down. Whew!! I am so glad it's over and everyone is doing well now. Pumpkin still gets a little anxious (and I'm now out of Dr. Goodpet), but I gave him my robe to lay on on the bed yesterday, and that seemed to calm him a great deal. He slept on it for hours.

Tiny Tim is discovering the joys of computing. Since Thursday night, he has been coming in and wanting to be picked up. He watches the screen until he gets tired and then goes to sleep in my arms. He loves being cuddled. Toby only likes cuddling when he is too tired to play anymore. He also loves to "supervise." He has been "helping" Ken with just about everything. Right now, he is supervising Ken fixing the litter box area. He is nailing down some metal strips on the outside of the linoleum piece he put down. He also got out into the garage 2-3 times. Let's face it, he's naughty. He made it all the way down into the basement the other day, too. We have fun chasing him, oh, yeah.

Toby Tiger and Purrcy were having a great play fight this morning. Purrcy (big black and white cat) was laying on his side, Toby was trying to rush in and bite him, but Purrcy kept kicking him with his feet and fending him off with his front paws. That went on about five minutes, and then they were off chasing across the livingroom. Purrcy is a gentle giant, he would never hurt a kitten.

This is getting long, but I just had to mention that my daughter and husband have adopted Claudia. There has been the usual settling in process, but I think it will work out. She has a cat, Izabelle, who is about Claudia's age. Then there's Shadow, old lady cat who is blind. She hates any other cats, but she came out from under the couch about the third day and resumed her usual resting place on the back of the couch.

Thanks SO MUCH for the update...and it's never too much to read!

Good to hear that everyone is getting settled in, however since you mentioned your daughter now has Claudia, how are her babies doing without her? It doesn't sound like they miss her too much, especially since my namesake seems to have adopted Purrcy as his playmate.

Also good to hear that Tiny is learning how to use the computer. Currently my black child is stationed on the corner of my computer desk, almost on top of the mouse pad once again. It's a good thing computers are rather resiliant to cat fur!!

Again thanks...and keep me posted on their activities in their new home!

Toby, the kittens didn't whine or look for their mom or anything. I guess kittens are really adaptable, and they and mom were not spending much time together anymore anyway in the last weeks they were together. I think Claudia was glad to be done with the kitten raising. Claudia took longer to adapt to her new home. Mara said she followed her around the apartment for three days asking for love. Claudia is not a lap cat, but she likes to be petted and rub on your legs, and the usual cat stuff. She has a big purr and will purr at a touch. She was also the greeter at the door at our house. Tiny Tim not only looks almost like mom, but also purrs like her. He purrs as soon as you touch him, and he is loud. He also asks for affection quite frequently. He is just a little lover.

PS: I'm glad your kitty is helping you at the computer. LOL I am truly glad Toby Tiger hasn't discovered it yet.

I'm sure your daughter will give Claudia all the love she needs, just as you did while she was with you and of course, you will still see her often. She is definitely one very lucky cat! My striped female cat is somewhat like her, not wanting to be held too much but at the same time wanting attention and she sleeps on the bed. My male kitten will not stay indoors, so I allow him out during the day since there are other cats in the neighborhood he's become friends with. I believe part of the problem with him was that I adopted him after he'd become accustomed to being outdoors. At least my neighborhood is safer than where I found him...I hope. He still wants in at night and lots of love and affection.
