Woman gets additional charges in case of missing girl

Published: January 29, 2009

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office has issued warrants for Salinda Rodriguez in connection with an 11-year-old Reidsville girl who was reported missing this week.

Rodriguez is charged with three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of felonious child restraint. The Reidsville Police Department had already charged Rodriguez with possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. She is in the Rockingham County Jail on $5,000 bail. She is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 11.

Alamance deputies found Mikayla Shambley just after noon Wednesday at the Colonial Inn in Reidsville. The girl was reported missing by her mother after she failed to return from a shopping trip with Rodriguez—a neighbor who lives at Altamahaw-Union Ridge Road in Alamance County—and Rodriguez’s two young daughters, Jones, said.

Mikayla left on the shopping trip at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. A deputy found Mikayla after seeing Rodriguez’s car in the Colonial Inn lot, Jones said.

Jones explained the difference between kidnapping and felonious child restraint. Kidnapping involves taking a person by force and against his or her will; Mikayla willingly left with Rodriguez in the beginning. She has been returned to her family. The Rodriguez children are in the custody of their father.
