CHAMBERSBURG - Pennsylvania State Police say the human resources director at Menno Haven is missing and “endangered.”
Police said Steven Baird, 33, of Chambersburg left home for work at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday but never arrived at Menno Haven.
Trooper David Rush said Baird's wife, Amy, reported him missing Wednesday afternoon.
Baird may be driving a black 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Pennsylvania license plate FDY-1398. His name and vehicle have been entered into the National Crime Information Center database to alert police across the nation to his disappearance, Rush said.
Menno Haven reaction
“Our hearts and prayers are with Steve and his family,” Menno Haven CEO Rodney Mason said in a statement this morning. “The employees and residents of Menno Haven have been praying for his safe return, and we encourage anybody with any information to come forward and talk to the state police.”
Baird joined Menno Haven in mid-December.
“We've been having prayer sessions,” said Wendy Cowan, chief officer for marketing and public relations. “We're just as perplexed as everyone else.”
Rush said police are “entertaining every idea” of what could have happened to Baird, though they have no “concrete” evidence of foul play.
“If he's out and just doesn't want to be found, then he may switch up his habits because he knows they track this or that,” he said, adding the same may be true if foul play was involved.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 264-5161.

Disappearance of Pa. man still a mystery
By DON AINES chambersburg@herald-mail.com
CHAMBERSBURG, PA. — Pennsylvania State Police say they still have no clues to the whereabouts of a Hamilton Township man who disappeared last week on his way to work.
“Unfortunately, there is no update,” Trooper David Rush said Monday of the search for 33-year-old Steven Baird, who was last seen leaving for work at about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2. Baird, the human resources director at Menno Haven, was driving a black 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Pennsylvania license plate FDY-1398.
“There’s been no new activity on anything,” Rush said when asked about banking or credit card transactions or cell phone calls. “Our request is that any information continue to be circulated. Any information is appreciated.”
Rush said police cannot rule out foul play, or find a reason why Baird might have left voluntarily, either.
“There is no indication he was unhappy with his job,” Rush said. “Everything was smooth, or at least that’s the impression.”
There have been calls about possible sightings of the Jeep, but nothing has panned out, Rush said. All calls are being followed up and “there’s a lot of effort going into this,” he said.
Baird was hired last summer as human resources director, said Wendy Cowan, Menno Haven’s chief officer for marketing and public relations.
“We have had prayer sessions and we are praying that he is all right, wherever he is,” Cowan said. “We are just as perplexed as everyone else.”
“We encourage anybody with any information to come forward and talk to the state police,” Menno Haven Chief Executive Officer Rodney Mason said in a statement issued Friday. He called Baird “a well received addition to our family.”
Anyone with information about Baird or his whereabouts may call police at 717-264-5161.

Police prioritize case of Hamilton Township man who has been missing for a week
By KEITH PARADISE Staff writer
The Chambersburg station of the Pennsylvania State Police has around 400 open crime cases currently under investigation -- but a missing man is taking precedence right now.
A week has gone by since Steven Baird, 33, of Hamilton Township was reported missing. Cpl. Bernard Stanalonis said investigators are still looking for Baird, but conceded that the longer he remains missing, the tougher the search becomes.
"As the days go on, the difficulty rises. As days carry on it doesn't help us or get us closer to solving where he's at," Stanalonis said.
Baird left his home to go to his job as director of human resources at Menno Haven at 7:40 a.m. Jan. 2. He was reported as missing and possibly endangered when he did not arrive for work. Baird was driving a black 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Pennsylvania license plate FDY-1398 and clear, aftermarket taillights.
Linda Baird, Steven's mother, thanked the community and the state police for support in helping to try to track him down and said the family remains optimistic Baird will be found.
"We love him and we miss him," Baird said.
Investigators have done numerous interviews with the family and friends of Baird to try to find clues on his location. Baird and his vehicle have also been entered in the National Crime Information Center, a national database used by law enforcement agencies. Police have been attempting to track Baird's financial records to see if there have been recent transactions that could determine a location.
Stanalonis said Baird did not have global positioning equipment in his vehicle or on a cellular phone to find him that way.
As time goes on, it increases the possibility that Baird is not in the area. Stanalonis said there are ways for people to leave an area and simply disappear untraced. For example, numerous arrest warrants sometimes take years to serve because law enforcement can't locate the suspects.
"If someone doesn't want to be found, there are definitely ways to not be found," Stanalonis said.
In 19 years of law enforcement, Stanalonis said he's seen many missing person reports, but it is extremely rare to have someone Baird's age go missing and remain missing for longer than a week. He emphasized that Baird is not in any legal trouble for disappearing and would not face any charges.
He said that the only way that charges could be filed is against someone who was interviewed by police and lied about Baird's whereabouts.
"Our goal is to find him and to make sure that he's OK," Stanalonis said.

Missing man last seen getting gas
By Tyler Miller
The Record Herald
Published: Tuesday, January 15, 2008 10:03 AM CST
CHAMBERSBURG - There has been no activity on the cell phone or credit cards of a Chambersburg man who has been missing for nearly two weeks, Pennsylvania State Police said this morning.
Police Trooper David Rush said the investigation into the disappearance of 33-year-old Steven Baird is still active, but there have been no leads in the case.
Baird, the human resources director of Menno Haven Retirement Communities in Chambersburg, disappeared the morning of Jan. 2 when he left for work at 7:40 a.m. and never arrived.
His wife Amy reported him missing that afternoon.
Baird was last seen on video surveillance footage at the Sheetz gas station on Lincoln Way West in Chambersburg and at an ATM on Federal Street about a block away, according to police. Those sightings occurred the morning he disappeared.
Considered endangered
Baird is considered an endangered missing person, although police have said previously there is no concrete evidence of foul play.
“We can't rule out that he's been harmed or is considering harm to himself,” Rush explained. “It's something considered when someone (goes missing).”
Rush said the search for Baird is still proactive, and media exposure of the case has resulted in a number of people calling in with tips and suggestions.
Baird is believed to be driving a black 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Pennsylvania license plate FDY-1398. His name and vehicle have been entered into the National Crime Information Center database.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call police at 264-5161.
Menno Haven senior management could not be reached for comment this morning as to whether Menno Haven is taking steps to replace Baird who was hired as human resources director in December.

Franklin County man missing
by The Patriot-News
Wednesday January 16, 2008, 11:40 AM
State police asked for the public's help today to locate a Chambersburg man who disappeared two weeks ago and hasn't been heard from since.
Steven Baird, 33, was last seen around 8:10 a.m. Jan. 2 at the Sheetz store on Loudon Street in Chambersburg, where he fueled up his black Jeep Grand Cherokee, said Troop H spokesman Trooper Karl Schmidhamer.
A few minutes later, Baird made made what appeared to be a normal withdrawal of cash from a nearby automated bank machine, Schmidamer said. There has been no activity on his bank or credit cards since, Schmidhamer said.
Schmidhamer said Baird's Jeep, which had Pennsylvania tags FDY-1398, has distinctive clear lens taillights. The vehicle has not been found, he said.
Baird is described as white, 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-10, 17o pounds with brown hair and a "business-style'' haircut. He was last seen wearing a pin-stripe dress shirt and blue jeans, Schmidhamer said.
Schmidhamer said Baird was to have reported for work at 9 a.m. at Menno Haven in Greene Twp., where he serves as director of human resources. His wife reported him missing that afternoon when he failed to return home, Schmidhamer said.
Foul play is not suspected, Schmidhamer said. He said troopers have investigated numerous different angles, all of which have led to dead ends.
"We're pretty much appealing to the public, anybody who has any information on this guy,'' Schmidhamer said.
Readers with information may call state police at Chambersburg at 717-264-5161.

Last Update: 6:14 pm
A local man, leaves for work not to be heard from again.
Now the Pennsylvania State Police is trying to get the word out in hopes of finding him.
Steven Baird, 33, of Hamilton Township, Franklin County left for work the morning of January 2, kissed his wife goodbye, which is a daily routine for him, but that day, he never made it to work.
Chambersburg police say Baird stopped for gas, and then made a small cash withdrawal from the ATM and that's the last whereabouts they know of.
The reason this missing persons case is so unusual is the fact that Baird just disappeared off the face of the earth in a matter of hours.
Police tell CBS 21 New that he was a stable guy. He had a wife and went to work everyday.
"We really don't know what happened to him. We’ve looked at all avenues and examined as much as we can right now. We're at a loss...we're pretty much at an end and that's why we're reaching out to the public for their help," says Tpr. Karl Schmidhamer, Pennsylvania State Police.
Baird drives a black Jeep Grand Cherokee with clear aftermarket taillights. He's between 5’7” and 5’10” and weights about 170 pounds with short brown hair.
Right now police say there's no indication he would have done anything to harm himself and there's no sign of foul play.
If you think you may know something, you're asked to call State Police Chambersburg at 264-5161.

Police say no evidence of foul play in death of Steven Baird
By DON AINES

NEELYTON, Pa. - A body discovered this morning in a wooded area of Huntingdon County has been identified as that of Steven Baird, a Franklin County nursing home executive missing since Jan. 2.
Baird, 33, a resident of Hamilton Township and the human resources director for Menno Haven, was last seen leaving for work on the morning of Jan. 2 in his black 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Police said the cause and manner of death were undetermined, but there was no evidence of foul play.
Huntingdon County Coroner Ron Morder said an autopsy will be performed Friday or Saturday at J.C. Balir Hospital in Huntingdon, Pa.
The vehicle and body were discovered at about 8 a.m., police said. The vehicle was on a logging road in a wooded area off Pa. 641 in Dublin Township and was found by the owner of the property, Morder said.
Following Baird's disappearance, Pennsylvania State Police in Franklin County said that there was no credit or debit card activity or cell phone calls to indicate where he might have gone.
Baird was hired as human resources director at Menno Haven last summer, according to an official with the retirement community.

Coroner says toxicology tests might shed light on how what killed missing man
Don Aines - chambersburg@herald-mail.com
HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The cause and manner of death of a Franklin County, Pa., man whose body was discovered Thursday in a wooded area of Huntingdon County will not be known until toxicology tests are completed, Huntingdon County Coroner Ron Morder said.
Steven Baird, 33, of Chambersburg, Pa., the human resources director for Menno Haven Retirement Communities, had been missing since leaving for work on the morning of Jan. 2. Morder said Baird's body was found Thursday morning inside his black 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The vehicle was on a logging road off Pa. 641 near Neelyton, Pa., Morder said. The discovery was made by the owner of the property, he said. He and Pennsylvania State Police said there was no sign of foul play.
"Nothing like that," Morder said when asked if there was a gunshot wound or other obvious injuries. An autopsy was performed Friday at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, but toxicology tests could take two or more weeks to complete, he said.
Police had been searching for Baird for three weeks, and friends and family had been putting up posters and putting information on the Internet. There were no credit or debit card transactions or cell phone activity following his disappearance, police said.

HUNTINGDON - The cause of death of a Chambersburg man whose body was found Thursday in his vehicle on a logging road in southern Huntingdon County will not be known for several weeks.
Huntingdon County Coroner Ron Morder said this morning that preliminary results from an autopsy conducted Friday on Steven Baird in J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, were inconclusive.
With no apparent cause of death, any additional findings will come after toxicology reports are completed in a few weeks, Morder said.
Baird, 1868 Bell Ave., disappeared the morning of Jan. 2 after leaving for work at Menno Haven, where he had been human resources director since September. His wife, Amy, reported him missing that afternoon.
The 33-year-old was found around 8 a.m. Thursday in his Jeep Grand Cherokee on a private logging road off Route 641 near Neelyton, just west of the Franklin County line. State police have said there was no evidence of foul play.
The Pennsylvania State Police trooper in Huntingdon investigating the case said this morning he had no new information to release.
Baird's memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in King Street Church, Chambersburg.
