County IDS program to help with missing persons

Orange County TRIAD has partnered with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and SafeAssured ID to expedite searches for missing persons.
Law enforcement officials know how critical time is when finding a missing person. As part of that, having good information and a good picture are vital in the search. SafeAssured provides that information.

The SafeAssured ID kit, purchased by the sheriff’s office and TRIAD, consists of a computer with the SafeAssured software, a video camera, a backdrop, a printer and a digital fingerprint scanner. Using the kit, mini-CDs are created that contain a person’s fingerprints, digital photo, video showing movement and mannerisms, voice recording, physical description and vital personal information. A missing person poster can then be made using the information on the disc.

To ensure that the information is protected, the CDs are encrypted with a pass code that only a family member or law enforcement official can use to view the information. To keep the information secure, the CD cannot be used without the code and no information is stored in a database.
“If someone steals the disc, they can’t get the information off it,“ TRIAD Director Elaine Anderson said.

The cost of purchasing the kit is $5,000 but because Orange County Sheriff Mark Amos is a member of the sheriff’s association, it only cost $3,000. According to Anderson, TRIAD put up $1,500 of the cost and has worked hard to raise the rest, needing only $400 more which the Gordonsville VFW post recently donated. However, Anderson hopes to raise more.

“The cost of the discs is $6 each,“ she said. “We would like to raise money to give out the discs to people who can’t afford them. No one will be turned down.“

According to Amos, the kit will be taken to local events to get parents involved. However, SafeAssured is designed for people of all ages, not just children. Jamie Hern, a deputy with the sheriff’s office is being trained in creating the discs using the kit. Amos is the first sheriff in the state to purchase the kit.
