Over the last few weeks, the Walters have started an Internet e-mail chain, passed out fliers around Madison and St. Clair counties and put out a watch with nationwide Christian trucker groups. At the same time, Edwardsville and Madison County law enforcement authorities have been on the lookout and posted Anna's information with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Since her disappearance, the Walters say they have had no contact with Anna - but were called on Nov. 16 by someone who told them she was seen on the Georgia and Alabama border.

According to the article her father said, "We are 90 percent sure she has gotten where she has by hitching rides, since she has no money."

As the days and weeks pass by, an Edwardsville couple is growing increasingly concerned in their search for their 16-year-old daughter, who they believe ran away nearly a month ago.

Byron and Marty (Martha) Walter say their daughter, Anna Walter, has been missing since Oct. 27.

On the night of her disappearance, she told her parents that she was walking down the street to McDonald's, but never returned.

Over the last few weeks, the Walters have started an Internet e-mail chain, passed out fliers around Madison and St. Clair counties and put out a watch with nationwide Christian trucker groups. "We haven't heard anything since," said her father Byron Walter, who teaches in the St. Louis Public School District. "We are 90 percent sure she has gotten where she has by hitching rides, since she has no money."

Anna was adopted by the Walters from Ekaterinburg, Russia, when she was 11 years old. She arrived in the United States on Dec. 25, 2003. The family is still hoping she will be home for the fifth anniversary of that special day.

"As you can imagine, Christmas is going to be rough this year, unless God chooses to bring her back home by then," said her father. "We want her to come home. We love her and this does not diminish that at all."

According to her adopted parents, based on their talks with Anna, her early life in Russia was extremely traumatic, with her biological father apparently dying when she was young and her mother losing custody rights due to alcohol abuse. She has also been diagnosed with both Reactive Attachment Disorder and Bipolar Disorder, and has developed a history of running away over the last few years - the longest case, until now, being 12 days. In each of those cases, police or her parents found her in the local area.

Last year, Anna was a student at Edwardsville High School. The Walters said that in most ways, she is just like other teenagers, enjoying things like music, movies, fashion and talking on the phone.

Her mother Marty said the family continues to try carrying on day to day, praying, waiting and hoping that she is alive.

"Anna is always in our thoughts and dreams, and of course in our prayers," she said. "We jump when the phone or doorbell rings, in hopes that she might call or just show up on our doorstep. Our arms will be open wide."

Anna is described as about 5 foot tall and 120 pounds, with dark eyes, fair skin color and dark (straight or slightly wavy) hair. She also still retains some of her Russian accent.

But I am missing.
I have not been home since October 27th, 2008. I am a runaway. I am a very kind girl with serious issues. I have been, at one point in time or another, a victim of almost every type of abuse and neglect. I am scarred. I love you. I love you so much and I miss you with every fiber of my being Anna... Natasha… my Natasha… my Anna. I know I’ve made my mistakes. I know I’ve neglected you and not loved you the way I should’ve and I’m sorry. I’m so, so, so, soooooooo sorry. I love you more than you could ever know. Even though I know you are scared of the consequences… the police… please come home, Anna. I love you! I want you to know that no matter what happens, I believe you do not deserve DOC/prison. Even if you were under house arrest for the next 20 billion years, I wouldn’t care. As long as I got to see you… to love you… to begin to try and make up for all the horrible things I’ve done.

You have no idea what I would give up just to hear your voice again… how I’d give my life for you, if it meant I could touch you… hold you in my arms one last time. I would do anything, Anna!

I want you to know that I do not blame you for any of this. I know you have emotional issues that are beyond your control, and it is not your fault that Mom and Dad could not afford the treatment you needed and deserved. I know that I have honestly thought of running away before, but then I remembered how hurt my family and all those I love and care about would be. I hate it to Nut. To me, recovered means "body found"..I know thats not always what is meant but "found safe" should be used unless the person is deceased.
