ANDERSON COUNTY — It seemed an unlikely place for a grave.

The home and yard at 118 Faye Drive in Anderson County off Abbeville Highway near Airline Road bore little evidence of what had happened there. But then Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper emerged from the woods near the home Friday afternoon to confirm that the body of Amerise Brojet Adams Barbre, 31, had been found at the site.

John Hunter Lambert IV, 34, was charged with murder Friday in connection with the death. Barbre and Lambert lived at the Faye Drive home, according to neighbors and authorities.

Barbre had been placed in a shallow grave — 18 inches deep — and covered with earth and cinder blocks, Skipper said.

The condition of Barbre’s body suggested she had been in the grave for several weeks, said Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore.

Acting on an anonymous tip that Barbre had not been seen since the latter part of December, Anderson County sheriff’s deputies initiated an investigation earlier this week that led them to the grisly discovery Friday morning, Skipper said.

The sheriff identified Lambert, who was in custody at the Anderson County Detention Center as of Friday evening, as Barbre’s boyfriend. But Skipper said he could provide no other details about what might have led to Barbre’s death.

The arrest warrant for Lambert indicated that on or about Dec. 22, he had caused that death. No other detail was provided in the warrant.

A bond hearing for Lambert was pending as of Friday night, Skipper said, but given the nature of murder charges, a specific date for the hearing could not be determined at that time.

In March 2006 and again in October last year, deputies were dispatched in reference to reports of criminal domestic violence between Lambert and Barbre. Lambert was arrested, according to the report about the March 2006 incident, when Barbre reported that Lambert had, in an attempt to keep her from leaving the premises, placed her in a headlock following an argument.

In 1993, Lambert pleaded guilty to two counts of petty larceny, one count of second-degree burglary and possession of illegal weapons, for which he was sentenced to probation, according to Anderson County public records.

Lambert also was arrested in November and faces charges of third-degree burglary and criminal conspiracy.

When the ambulance bearing Barbre’s body rolled slowly up the gravel incline of Faye Drive on Friday afternoon, David White, a neighbor to Barbre and Lambert, could only shake his head.

Barbre, he said, apparently would “go running off from time to time.”

“But it’s a pretty sad situation that it all came to this,” White said.

According to a report from Independent-Mail coverage partner WSPA News Channel 7, White said, “John, he seemed like a good person. Thought he had a big heart. Would have never thought he would do something like this.”

Lambert is the father of two teens, White said. The children’s location and identity were not known from officials as of Friday evening.

An autopsy is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. today at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson, Shore said.
