lNovember 5, 2006 was the last time Samantha was reported being seen.
Seventeen days later, a friend of hers called Samantha's sister Jennifer. She told Jennifer that she needed to check on Samantha. This according to her Mother. Jennifer made a police report and that seems to be where we are now. Samantha's boyfriend, 47 year old Walt Shockley, was the last to see her. EVER article, including video from WYFF said she left with out taking anything. I noticed in the Index-Journal of Greenwood,SC , Ken Maple reporting that Walt Shockley said she grabbed her purse and left. Chief Thomas in a recent interview said he did not know why it was reported she took nothing, that she did take her purse.
Last week I was contacted by someone from another site asking if the resemblances of Jane Doe in Chicago and Samantha had been reported.
I passed it along and have seen on the Web Sleuths site that they had reported it also. How or why Samantha would be in Chicago is a mystery in itself, but possible.
Just the same, I would like for Samantha to be added to any missing adult sites. Hopefully I am doing this right, new to the sight, but many familiar names. Thanks so much!
Billie
Samantha was 22 years old-----5'4--110lbs--long dyed red hair--hazel eyes
Straight A student at Piedmont Tech and wanted to be an Art Teacher.
Thanks again

CLINTON, SC (WIS) - Twenty-two-year-old Samantha Renee Smith disappeared late last year, and now authorities are out of leads in the search for her.

Her mother is pleading for clues to Samantha's whereabouts. "All I want to do is find out where she is, what happened to her."

What happened to Samantha Smith is anyone's guess. No one's heard from the 22-year-old in more than six months. Her mother says, "I got a habit of looking at young girls similar to her, thinking, you know, could that be her? When they turn around it's not."

And with each passing day her mom Rebia loses hope - any potential light at the end of the tunnel, flickering. "Honestly, it's not looking good."

Despite a history of depression, Samantha had a lot to live for according to her mom. Samantha wanted to be an art teacher and loved taking pictures. Those snapshots are especially hard for her mom to look at. "She wanted to do so much."

But as leads run dry, Clinton's police are just hoping "somebody out there will recognize her and get her back home where she belongs," says Chief John Thomas.

Searches of woods behind the home where Samantha was last seen have turned up nothing. Officials say Samantha lived there with her boyfriend, Walt Shockley.

While he isn't considered a suspect, Shockley refused to talk to WIS. Chief Thomas describes him this way, "He's still a person of interest. He will always be a person of interest, until we find her."

Whatever happened, good or bad, Samantha's mother just wants to know, making a plea to anyone who might have answers, "Call Clinton Police Department, let them know where she is so we can bring our family back together."

Police hope to generate leads by holding a press conference Thursday at 11am. SLED is also assisting in the investigation.

Details of DisappearanceSmith was last seen in Clinton, South Carolina on November 5, 2006. At the time, she was living with her boyfriend in a house in the 100 block of Leila Street. Her boyfriend stated they got into an argument about religion and Smith walked into a wooded area behind her home and never returned. Smith has never been heard from again. She left all her personal belongings behind, except her purse. There is no evidence of foul play in Smith's case, and her boyfriend has been ruled out as a suspect in her disappearance, but it is unclear what happened to her. Smith is described as an intelligent young woman. She enjoyed photography, hiking and horseback riding at the time of her disappearance. She was a student at Piedmont Tech and made good grades; she wanted to transfer to Lander University and become an art teacher. She has dropped out of sight before, but never for this long, and her family believes she may have come to harm. Her case remains unsolved.

Samantha Renee Smith

CLINTON, SC (WIS) - Twenty-three-year-old Samantha Renee Smith seems to have vanished without a trace.

WIS News 10's Trey Paul went to Smith's hometown of Clinton, where investigators are still baffled, and a mom still prays for answers.

Samantha's mom, Reba Smith, says, "Honest to God I don't know what happened."

She has "no idea. It's just like she disappeared off the face of the earth."
It's been a year to the day since the now 23-year-old vanished.

Her mom says, "Samantha is a great kid. She wants a lot out of life and I want my daughter home."

So where could she be? Police say she dealt with depression and had even run away before. But her mom never expected anything like this. "I couldn't believe it was Samantha. For the fact is, Samantha was a bright, smart, intelligent girl. She knew what she wanted out in life and she was going to get it."

She wanted to be an art teacher.

Police say Samantha was last seen walking on Lela Street. They say a few hours before she and her boyfriend got into an argument at church over religion. They say when she got home, she took off.

Chief John Thomas says, "He drives away in another direction. She walks away in another direction ... so she just disappeared."

Investigators have no suspects. They ruled out Samantha's boyfriend a year ago. But they're hoping this story will change that. So is Samantha's mom, who isn't giving up hope, "The strength that I've gotten is, I feel like Samantha is giving it to me to keep going and to keep looking."

The number for the Clinton Police Department is (864)-833-7512, if you have any information on this case.

Only heaven knows why she was with him. Her father killed himself about 15 years ago, so maybe it was looking for another Dad. From what I can tell, she sure wasn't that close to her step-father! Even her Mother had not seen her in almost a year when she disappeared. I doubt she had seen him. Although everyone lived within a 35 mile range.

Samantha has been placed on Project Jason's 18 Wheel Angels campaign. A special poster has been made for her and can be downloaded and printed for placement. More information about the program, and the link for the poster can be found here:

http://projectjason.org/18wheel.shtml

In addition to the campaign, Samantha is also featured in a national trucking publication, Independent Contractor. This free magazine is distributed in truck stops nationwide and has a circulation of about 150,000.

Through the Gears and Independent Contractor are two of Target Media Partner's many publications. In partnership with Project Jason, they each feature two missing persons each per month. You can pick up your free copies at a local truck stop, but if it's far from you, you may want to call and ask if they carry that magazine. These are NOT with the regular for purchase magazines.

We hope this helps in the search for Samantha. Please consider printing and placing a poster in businesses in your community.

I guess I am trying to hard, but I can't figure out for sure if Samantha's picture will be in the trucking magazines from the 1sto -15th, since today is the 9th? And is that the same dates that her poster can be printed and distributed or will it always be on the site to be downloaded. I am so amazed how many were printed to start with and how it has dwindled down to so few.

The trucking magazine is a monthly magazine. She is in the July issue.

If you look at the 18 Wheel Angels webpage, you will see that all the persons who have not been found still have the poster link there. It will remain there until they are found.

I have tried to pass the word along about the magazines, posters and 18 wheel angel progam all together. Just seeing how the numbers have gone down over time is so sad.
(Number of posters) Do you think it is possible that more truckers are actually making copies and putting them up, just not going on-line and letting you know? I tried to figure out if there is some kind of incentive for the drivers to keep in contact. Maybe they just don't have time. I didn't know if the truckers are listed as angels in the magazines? I know the incentive to be involved is to find the missing. I just didn't know if there is something I was missing.

It's hard to say what may be happening. The truckers don't like to report in, and we don't get on them about it because we want them to do it out of care, not obligation. If we had the budget for advertsing, perhaps we could do better with it.

We are always working on things behind the scenes to help find the missing, so we'll just keep on trying.

I am so upset with myself. I have been reading everything again I have on Samantha and sitting here thinking, wow it has been a year since I felt like I HAD to look for Samantha. Then it dawned on me...IT was her birthday last year that I could not get her off my mind. I had heard about her in May when they did the six month update on TV. And it just hit me. I've missed her birthday! It was the 13th. Last Sunday. I don't know what I could have done but I feel like I let her down. I should have realized it and posted something about it. Late but..........
Happy Birthday Samantha........:1222423:

One article said that her friend said she left after an argument about religion. Did anything more specific come out about that argument? Was some church involved that maybe she or he favored or thought about joining and the other one opposed or criticized it? Would there have been someone involved in some religious group/church that she might have gotten real interested in? I wonder if they went into detail with Shockley about the nature of the argument.

nanabillie
07-20-2008, 12:03 PM
I asked Samantha's best friend (Susan Walters') daughter if she knew which Church. She said no. I had thought since I only live 10 miles away I might visit the church. I can't find right off what she was supposedly wearing but I was thinking some type pants and shirt. Not really sure and I'm surprised at myself. It wasn't a dress.
Other things that really bother me. I asked her Mom and SD about a car. They said when they asked, too, it had been put at a salvage yard and smashed. Real smart huh? Walt supposedly said the motor was blown. This is from the parents. One time Walt says she walks off into the woods behind his house, one time she was walking up the road. One time walking as he was driving off.
In one of the articles printed here, Chief Thomas says that Walt "is a person of interest and will always be until the case is solved". Another he says Walt has been cleared.

nanabillie
07-20-2008, 12:09 PM
The video that Micky posted, that I wish EVERYONE would watch, has the news anchor saying she took nothing with her, no purse, nothing. Some other articles said the same.
Until Ken Maple for the Greenwood Index Journal wrote his article stating that Walt said they argued, she grabbed her bag and left. I asked Ken his info and he said he got it from the police file. When the chief was asked about it on our local radio show, he said some people just got their "wires crossed" I think how he put it. That she did take her purse. Her Mom told me she left her billfold at Susan Walters house. I asked if she to get it and she said no. Susan's daughter Christy said that Susan was so mad when she heard that. She said she did NOT have Samantha's billfold.....So???

Also, I wonder if anyone checked to see if Samantha asked for her transcript from Piedmont Tech? I doubt they did and doubt she did. When it is 17 days before anyone in the family knows she is missing, and no report had been done. That's a lot of time. Loving photography like she did, she would not have left without her camera. I have not heard a thing about it. Her Mom was mad because they would not release Samantha's computer. I don't know how you could find out all the answers to these questions.

Thanks to anyone that will help contact media. Her Mom it says is doing the "Fundraiser". Anything to get Samantha's name out to the public.
I was a little surprised at what LE said about the day she disappeared. She went into the trailer and he left for lunch. Every article has something different. I had been told that the most recent "alibi" if you will, of Walt Shockly was he went to get lunch. SEVENTEEN days later he had the receipt to show he bought ONE lunch.
Doesn't everyone keep their McDonald's or whatever receipts for three weeks, just in case you need it? Sorry, this is just my opinion. Holding somethings in for one year is hard.

It would be so wonderful if Samantha has been found alive!!!

That would be wonderful, but please don't get your hopes up too far. Personally, I believe if she'd been found alive an immediate announcement would have been made rather than to schedule one 24 hours in advance. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm just sayin' ....

You've worked so hard, I hope it's good news. I'll check back tomorrow to see what happenes.

I read up-thread where you don't live far away, will you be able to go to the press conference?

nanabillie
12-02-2008, 03:07 AM
No, still have this bum leg. My friend will call soon as possible. You are right, they would have announced that probably. I thought the same about a body. We would have heard that on the news, too. I would think it probably is an arrest. Don't know, but that would be good news, too. Not as good as her being alive, but we can't change the past. If it is an arrest, I hope he tells them where she is so she can be put to rest.
I have always hated the thought that she is lying somewhere in the woods.

Good job Billie!!! :happy0158:
I know this one haunts you a little more than some others. I hope they have some good news like maybe an arrest. I don't believe her boyfriend's statements and I say statements because there have been too many. Too many women are the victims of their other halves and I truly believe Samantha is one. I hope and pray I'm wrong. Maybe she did commit suicide but I think if she did a body would have surfaced by now. He holds the key and I wish he'd get a concisence and give it up.
Praying for good news!:innocent0001:

CLINTON, S.C. -- Clinton police are reminding the public about the case of a woman who disappeared two years ago in hopes that new clues might surface.

The family of Samantha Renee Smith joined police for a news conference Tuesday in hopes of generating new leads.

On Nov. 5, 2006, Smith, who was 22 at the time, left the home she shared with her boyfriend in Clinton. She was on foot, and didn't have her purse, identification or any money with her.

She has not been seen or heard from since.

Samantha is 5 feet 4 inches long, weighs about 110 pounds and has hazel eyes. At the time of her disappearance, she had long, dyed red hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Clinton police

Lesley Lane - GwdToday News Reporter 02.DEC.08

It’s been more than two years since she disappeared from her home in Clinton. There was an argument, then a vanishing into thin air, leaving investigators puzzled and family members pleading for a young woman’s return home.

Samantha Rene Smith was last seen on November 5, 2006 at her home on Leila Street in Clinton. After an argument with her live in boyfriend, Walter Shockley, police say Smith vanished, appearing to have left her home on her on free will, on foot, taking nothing with her to aid her in her journey. Smith’s boyfriend, Shockley, was the last person to see her alive and never reported her missing. Police only became aware of Smith’s disappearance a month later when her sister reported her missing. While police say Shockley has been ruled out as a suspect, they say he will always remain a person of interest because of his relationship with Smith.

Today, Clinton Public Safety, along with Senior Agent Mike Prodan of the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), held a news conference in hopes to regenerate interest in a case they now consider “cold”.

Smith is described as a white female, 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 110 pounds. Samantha has long blonde hair that was dyed red at the time of her disappearance. She has hazel eyes. According to family, Samantha formerly wore braces on her teeth. Before her disappearance Samantha had the wires removed from her teeth but chose to keep the brackets. According to mental health reports, Smith had been on medication for depression and possesses suicidal tendencies. Smith’s family says she loves animals and spending time outdoors. She also enjoys photography.

According to Chief Thomas of Clinton Public Safety, investigators have followed leads on Smith’s case through Richland, Lexington, Greenville and Saluda counties. They have also searched for Smith in North Carolina and as far away as Chicago. Thomas says that Clinton Public Safety continues to keep in contact with SLED and the FBI VICAP program.

Agent Prodan said investigators routinely consider various scenarios in cases such as Smith’s. “Has the person chosen to drop off the face of the earth and assume a new identity? Has the person met with foul play and the body has not been discovered? Has the person taken their on life and the body has not been discovered.”

While Prodan says it is very difficult for an individual to voluntarily go missing, Chief Thomas says there is no evidence to indicate foul play.

“It’s almost like she was plucked out of the air”, said Thomas.

“If anyone has information pertaining to Ms. Smith’s whereabouts, they are advised to contact the proper authorities immediately. We remain hopeful of obtaining new information that will lead us to this individual.”

Investigators: Missing Woman May Be Alive

Published: December 2, 2008

Samantha Smith was last seen at her home in Clinton in Nov. 2006.

Her family says she had a fight with her boyfriend and took off, but investigators were alarmed because Smith left without her identification, money or her car.

Unfortunately, investigators in the case have nothing new to add. They held a press conference Tuesday morning and pleaded with the community for new information in the case.

They believe there’s a small chance Smith could still be alive.

Police have ruled out Smith’s boyfriend as a suspect.

If you have information in the case, call Clinton Public Safety at 864-833-7512.

Last week I had the privilege of meeting Samantha's best friend. She told me there is no way that Samantha just up and left. Susan, Samantha's friend, said that Samantha always loved wearing makeup and high heels, always taking care of herself. None of that was taken. Nothing personal. She also said that she did not know, sadly, what happened to her friend. As I gave Susan a hug, I also felt I was giving Samantha a hug; still promising to do everything I can to find out what happened to her. Samantha's nickname was Smiley. :)

According to who you ask...Me...Yes.

Brooke's parents, I think, reported which way she left. The person that last saw Samantha told different stories about the last time he saw her. One, going into the trailer, one she was going into the woods behind her trailer, one time walking up the road...

Brooke disappeared in the dark, early morning hours. Samantha on a Sunday afternoon.
Samantha's best friend Susan lived in Waterloo. That is between Clinton and Greenwood. Would she have gone past her best friend's house? That is where she always went if she needed someplace to go, according to Susan and her daughter.

Even in serial abductions there are variances to be expected.

It's unfortunate when there are differing witness accounts in a case. Brooke's case had differing accounts of what she told people about her plans, too. But that should mean more to investigate and check out, not dead ends.

I joined this site today because I just found out about Samantha's disappearance yesterday. I was talking to her sister sort of catching up because we know each other from school and I said, "So how has Samantha been?"

The last time I saw Samantha was probably at high school graduation.

My heart sank when I saw the look on her face. After some silence she told me what happened.

I had been in the Marine Corps and I didn't get much "news" from back home.

I wanted to share a few of my memories of Samantha.

Samantha was such a beautiful and great girl. Always nice to everyone. She was shy and quiet at times but she would always say hello and smile. I always thought of her as one of the best all around in our graduating class.

I remember sitting next to her in English class in 6th grade. At the time she really loved Lisa Frank products and she loved drawing them. She loved animals and art so much (she would be a great art teacher). The two of us would sit in the back of the class and draw or color. I acquired some money somehow and I bought her some Lisa Frank stuff at Wal-Mart. My mom said I shouldn't have spent all of my money on her since I rarely got any money but I wanted to get her something nice for always being so nice to me. After all that is what friends do, right? I still have a few things saved that she had given me during our friendship. I remember talking to her for hours on the phone after school.

She was a great friend and I will be praying for her and her family. I pray that she is alive, well, and that God lays it upon her heart to come back home to her family that loves her so much.

Only God knows why she disappeared and when she will be found. I know that for the rest of my life I will be keeping my eyes open hoping to see her again.

I hope her family does something to remind everyone that she is still missing.
At least a new, updated poster could be done. It's so sad that there is seldom anything in the news that someone is still looking for her.
If anyone would have the time to send her information to the local news media I sure would appreciate it. There's no use in asking the national media, I know they won't bother.

Well, it's here. November 5, 2009. Three years ago Samantha Renee Smith vanished! I can't tell there is much difference in every day life... Few people in our area recognize her name. You never see her face on missing posters. The ones I put up are always gone within a day or two. You don't hear Nancy Grace or any of the others for that matter, even mention her name. And believe me I have contacted many people in the media. Reminders of today and I hope, maybe one will run a story about her.
I wonder if the new police chief, or Safety Director, has ever heard her name mentioned.

You don't see her face flashing on every other myspace you look at. Almost no one would recognize her face if it scrolled across the top of this site. But,
Someone knows. And one day we will all know.
God bless you Samantha.:1222423:

None of our local papers or TV stations, and I reminded them. What more can you do? Not even a word from her family that I am aware of. That poor girl. But sadly she is not in the minority, but the majority. So many that we will never even know about.

Welcome to HFTM, Potsy. Personal knowledge of victims is so appreciated. I'm sorry that that there are no answers to what has happened to your friend.

Thank you for your service to our great country; you're a hero as well as a good friend. :give_rose:

Hope seems to fade away the longer Samantha is gone without a trace. I wonder how the family is doing? Why wasn't more done to find her. Lots of Whys in Samantha's case.

She worked and went to school in the town where I live & I have never seen a poster with Samantha's face on it. She is on Gwdtoday.com as a missing person.

That is right Nana... One day we will know where she is. God knows what happened to her.

THINKING OF SAMANTHA TODAY AND STILL PRAYING SHE WILL BE FOUND!!

Thank you for the tribute to Samantha, Anna. I'm always saddened to hear that there are no posters, etc. for missing persons. We lived in a small city, outside of a large city; when there was a missing person, family emergency (like a fire or sick family member,) the city we lived in, as well as all of the surrounding small towns were always well covered with posters - and they stayed up for a long time.

I get so mad when I read that the the boyfriend has been ruled out as a suspect. HOW??? How was he ruled out? He let her out of the car, so he says, and when he got back she was gone, he said. ???? He told different accounts. Once she was walking into the woods, once he said she was going into the trailer.
