Body discovered near freeway in Southern Marin

Posted: 02/17/2009 05:49:58 PM PST

A partially clothed skeleton was discovered Tuesday morning in a wooded area near Marin City, prompting an investigation by the coroner's office and the sheriff's department.

Coroner Kenneth Holmes said it was too early to say how the person died, and that the identity has not been established, but investigators estimate the person has been dead one to five years.

The remains were found off southbound Highway 101 between the onramp from Shoreline Highway and the Marin City exit. Holmes said the body was covered with detritus and eucalyptus brush, and some of the bones were missing.

The skeleton was discovered by Rich Stevens, a forester who was preparing a bid for tree removal on the site.

"It was a couple of shoes - that's what caught my eye - and some coveralls, and then what looked like leg bones to me," said Stevens, of Sutter Creek. "It was basically a stone's throw from the highway."

Anyone with information can call the coroner's office at 499-6043.

Body found near Tam Valley might be Sausalito man

Posted: 02/20/2009 05:08:49 PM PST

A set of skeletal remains found near Tamalpais Valley this week has been tentatively identified as a Sausalito man reported missing in 2005, the coroner's office said Friday.
The cause of death appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, said coroner's investigator David Foehner. A revolver was found near the body.

"There's no indication of foul play," Foehner said.

The remains were discovered Tuesday morning about 200 yards up the hill behind the Buckeye Roadhouse restaurant at 15 Shoreline Highway in unincorporated Mill Valley.

The body was partially buried under fallen eucalyptus branches and other detritus, in a rugged area accessible by a fire trail.

The remains were found by a forester who was preparing a bid for tree removal on the site.

The presumed name of the man will not be released until his identity can be confirmed through DNA, Foehner said.

The coroner's office is trying to find family members to compare genetic samples.

I sure hope they found a family member of the Sausalito man to compare DNA so the family can give him a proper burial and have their questions of where he is answered.

Coroner's office confirms ID of Mill Valley remains

Posted: 03/18/2009 11:02:33 AM PDT

A set of skeletal remains found near Tamalpais Valley last month has been confirmed as a suicidal Sausalito man reported missing in 2005, a coroner's investigator said.

The remains were discovered Feb. 17 about 200 yards behind the Buckeye Roadhouse restaurant at 15 Shoreline Highway. A rusty gun was found at the scene, and the cause of death was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The man has been identified as Peter William Maclean, a Richardson Bay boat resident who was last seen on Jan. 17, 2005. His identity was confirmed through dental X-rays and medical records of a toe fracture he had suffered as a child, said Darrell Harris, a Marin County coroner's investigator.
