Body discovered near freeway in Southern Marin
Posted: 02/17/2009 05:49:58 PM PST
A partially clothed skeleton was discovered Tuesday morning in a wooded area near Marin City, prompting an investigation by the coroner's office and the sheriff's department.
Coroner Kenneth Holmes said it was too early to say how the person died, and that the identity has not been established, but investigators estimate the person has been dead one to five years.
The remains were found off southbound Highway 101 between the onramp from Shoreline Highway and the Marin City exit. Holmes said the body was covered with detritus and eucalyptus brush, and some of the bones were missing.
The skeleton was discovered by Rich Stevens, a forester who was preparing a bid for tree removal on the site.
"It was a couple of shoes - that's what caught my eye - and some coveralls, and then what looked like leg bones to me," said Stevens, of Sutter Creek. "It was basically a stone's throw from the highway."
Anyone with information can call the coroner's office at 499-6043.
