KINGDOM CITY - A Cameron girl who went missing from her home sometime between 2 and 6 a.m. Wednesday was found hours later at a Kingdom City truck stop thanks to a tip from an observant trucker.
Callaway County Sheriff Dennis Crane said his department had just received an Amber Alert for 3-year-old Cheyenne Ross and her grandmother, 48-year-old Carla Kay Bell at 8 a.m. when they received a promising tip.
“A few minutes later we got a call from Clifton Stockton, a truck driver at Gasper's who had spotted a car that looked like the one from the alert,” Crane said. “Sure enough, the license plate matched. Our department responded and requested assistance from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.”
He said Cheyenne was found asleep in the car - which Bell allegedly had taken without permission when she went missing with her granddaughter.
“The child was turned over to the children's division until her mother could get here,” Crane said.
Bell was held at the Callaway County Jail for alleged kidnapping and tampering with a vehicle until Cameron authorities arrived to take her into custody. Crane said he does not know what charges the Cameron police intend to file.
When asked about a possible motive, he said Bell did try to provide an explanation.
“She said she believed the child was in danger, but could not provide a reason way,” Crane said, noting CCSD officers turned all of their information over to the Cameron Police Department.
“The real news here is the child wasn't hurt and we had a very observant trucker,” he said. “Obviously in this situation the Amber Alert did work.”
