GERRY LEONE: HIS YEAR BEGAN WITH MURDER (http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/homepage/x1197560418)
Gerry Leone did not have a lot of time to settle into his seat in his new office when he took the reins as the new Middlesex District Attorney last year.
Just two weeks after he took office on Jan. 4, 2007, 15-year-old James Alenson was stabbed to death in Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School on Jan. 19. John Odgren, 17, of Princeton and a student at the school, was arrested.
Since then, it has been a busy first year for Leone, of Holliston, who was a prosecutor under then-Middlesex District Attorney Tom Reilly in the 1990s.
"It's been a very successful year on a lot of fronts," he said on Friday, his first anniversary. "Things have been one hand hectic, but the other hand, it's gone very well."
It was a successful year on the prosecution side. The district attorney's office convicted 16 of 16 murder defendants in 2007. Working with Massachusetts State Police assigned to his office, 15 of 18 murders in Middlesex County were solved in 2007.
***
This year will continue to be busy, with several high profile cases on the horizon. Neil Entwistle's murder trial is expected to bring the kind of media attention from both the United States and England as the Louise Woodward trial did in 1997. Leone was one of the prosecutors on that case.
Entwistle, who is from England, is alleged to have killed his wife and daughter on Jan. 20, 2006. His trial is scheduled to begin in March.
Leone said his office is ready for the media onslaught.
"Public communication is very important, be it either print or television," he said. "It means more people are going to see it, and we have to build a solid prosecution. The attention that it has means we have to be better at what we have to do. I'm confident about it."

Entwistle trial date moved to June

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The trial for former Hopkinton resident Neil Entwistle, who is accused of murdering his wife and baby two years ago, has been postponed to June.
Entwistle’s lawyer, Elliot Weinstein, told Middlesex Superior Court Judge Diane Kottmyer at a hearing today that his co-counsel, Stephanie Page, recently underwent "major surgery," and would not be able to prepare for the scheduled March 17 trial date.
Her doctors will not allow her to begin working until at least the end of February, Weinstein said. (more at link)

Entwistle's gambling records from Gibraltar requested
By Norman Miller/Daily News staff
The MetroWest Daily News
Posted Apr 04, 2008
Prosecutors are seeking financial records from a European gambling Web site where murder suspect Neil Entwistle had an account and lost hundreds of dollars in the month before he is accused of killing his wife and infant daughter in Hopkinton two years ago.
Prosecutor Michael Fabbri sent a seven-page letter of rogatory to the British territory of Gibraltar seeking all financial records for a Web site called Casino on Net used by Entwistle, 28. The prosecution is seeking the records to help prove that Entwistle's financial problems were his motive for shooting his wife, Rachel, 27, and daughter Lillian Rose, 9 months old, on Jan. 20, 2006, in their Hopkinton home.
A letter of rogatory is a legal document sent from one country to another requesting testimony, documents or evidence in a court case. The Middlesex DA's office sent the letter in late March.
Casino on Net is run by a company called Cassava Enterprise Ltd., which is based in Gibraltar, a territory bordering Spain.
In the letter, Fabbri said Entwistle opened the gambling account on Dec. 15, 2005, approximately one month before he is accused of murdering his family.
The prosecutor said Entwistle lost hundreds of dollars that month, which Fabbri said is key evidence in building the motive for the murders.
"The prosecutor needs records relating to this account to help establish that Entwistle had financial difficulties and that these difficulties affected his state of mind and provided him with a motive to commit murder," Fabbri wrote in the letter.
The letter also lays out, with no new details, the case the prosecution is making against Entwistle.
The financial records have not been sent to the DA's office yet, according to the court records.
Entwistle is accused of killing his wife and daughter to hide a secret life of debt, online business scams and sex. Authorities say he stole a gun from his in-laws' Carver home, then used it to shoot his wife and daughter in bed.
Prosecutors allege he then drove to Carver, returned the gun and flew to England, returning to his Nottinghamshire home, where he was later arrested and extradited to Massachusetts.
The bodies of Rachel Entwistle and Lillian Rose were not discovered until Jan. 22, when Hopkinton Police conducted a well-being check at the home.
Entwistle told authorities he discovered his wife and daughter's bodies, considered killing himself, but could not go through with it. He said he went home to England to be with his family.
Entwistle is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm. He is being held without bail at the Middlesex Jail in Cambridge. If convicted, he faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Entwistle's trial is scheduled to begin June 2 in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn.

Court braces for media circus
Entwistle trial reminiscent of Woodward case
By Jessica Heslam | Wednesday, May 28, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Local Coverage
Court officials are bracing for a barrage of media from both sides of the pond at the double-murder trial of Neil Entwistle - an international throng not seen since the decade-old case of former British au pair Louise Woodward.
Officials have already spelled out the rules of the Entwistle trial to about two dozen members of the media, including some of the British press, at Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn.
That’s where Entwistle, a 29-year-old native of England, will be tried for the 2006 slayings of his wife, Rachel, 27, and their 9-month-old daughter, Lillian, in their Hopkinton home.
Jury selection begins Monday and officials fear too much publicity beforehand could taint the jury pool. Photos and footage of Entwistle will be limited during jury selection.
“I think the judge would prefer that the defendant not be shown entering the courthouse in shackles,” said court spokeswoman Joan Kenney. “Those kinds of photographs don’t help when you’re trying to seat a jury.”
Kenney said the trial is attracting international media attention and is similar to the Woodward case, “in terms of interest.”
The Woodward case drew intense media coverage on both continents. In 1997, a jury convicted Woodward of second-degree murder in the shaking death of 8-month-old Matthew Eappen of Newton. Middlesex Superior Court Judge Hiller B. Zobel later reduced the conviction to involuntary manslaughter and Woodward was set free after 279 days in jail.
The former Court TV, now called truTV, plans to cover every day of the Entwistle trial.
“The story has already received national and international attention,” said Marlene Dann, truTV’s “In Session” executive vice president. “A family murder is a shocking tragedy that touches the lives of many people.”
Other media outlets that have expressed interest include BBC, Sky TV, NBC’s “Dateline,” CNN and ABC’s “20/20.”

I won't be surprised if it takes longer than a day.
Oh I don't expect it to be only a day either! There's been way too much publicity in this case for them to find 12 people + alternates who have no opinion on it. :)

And if he's got the kind of defense team I'm expecting, they will be fighting each and every point into the rug. I imagine there will be a vigorous voir dire---
I'm sure you're right, kindee.

I bookmarked that site. I can't watch the trial while I'm at work so it'll be nice to see it at least in parts in the evening. :)

I see you are from NC. Did you follow the Mike/Kathleen Peterson saga at all? We visit Durham every year; love it love it love it. :0012:

Yes I know about the case but I never posted anywhere on it. :) I started at ctv on Anna Nicole then some other cases after that, like Phil Spector & Bobby Cutts trials. Some other cases I'm following haven't had a trial yet. Of course, I'm still waiting for an arrest in Michelle Young's murder!

Yes I know. I guess there just isn't enough evidence to get the DH on that one. :girl_sad: It's nice to meet you too! I'm looking forward to seeing justice for Rachel and baby Lillian.
