Amber Alert issued for two Tacoma children

An Amber Alert has been issued for two young children believed to be taken by their mother during a supervised visit at a Tacoma office.

A vehicle that was sought by police as part of the Amber Alert was found this afternoon in Tacoma, but the driver is not the person they were looking for.

Tacoma Police said the gray 2007 Nissan Sentra was being driven by another family member, not the mother who reportedly took her two children from a supervised visit at a Tacoma office this morning.

State social workers had taken Zariyah Brown, 1, and her 3-year-old brother, Deon Brown, from their home six days ago because of “extensive abuse,” the Amber Alert states.

The mother, 24-year-old Tivice Evans, and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Ahzariyah Yasharahla, were scheduled for a supervised visit with the boy and the girl this morning at the Department of Social and Health Services Office on South State Street in Tacoma.

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the children were taken during the supervised visit about 11 a.m.

Zariyah is described as a black, 2 feet 8 and 24 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Deon is black, 3 feet 5 and weighs 43 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about the children or the car is asked to call 911.

How the heck can kids be taken from a supervised visit at the DSHS office? Sounds like somebody wasn't doing their job. Supervised means supervised for gosh sakes.

Amber Alert Issued For Children In 'Grave Danger'

Alert on Wednesday afternoon after two children were allegedly abducted by their mother and the mother's boyfriend from a DSHS office.

Police said the children were taken from their mother last week because they had suffered extensive abuse. Officials from DSHS said they think the children are in "grave danger."

One of the children, Zariyah Brown, is a 1-year-old black girl, with black hair and brown eyes, 2 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 24 pounds.

The other child is named Deon Brown. He is a 3-year-old black boy, with black hair and brown eyes, 3 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 43 pounds.

DSHS officials said they think the children were taken by their mother, Tivice Evans, 21, who is described as a black woman with black hair and brown eyes, 5 feet 4 inches tall and 150 pounds.

She is reported to be with her boyfriend Ahzariyah Yasharahla, 25, who is described as a black man, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 260 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

A vehicle that officers were searching for has been found but there is still no word on the children, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Tacoma Police Department at 253-591-5959 or dial 911.

He must have simply grabbed them up and ran....just like the guy did in Conroe (near Houston,TX). They set up a visit in Chuckee Cheese, and the non-costodial father grabbed the child and ran out to a waiting truck.

Car sought in Amber Alert case found; children still missing

TACOMA, Wash. -- Police have located the car sought in the search for two young children who were kidnapped by their own mother and her boyfriend on Wednesday afternoon.

The 2007 gray Nissan Sentra sought in the case has been located in Tacoma; however, the whereabouts of the missing children are not known. Investigators said the car was being driven by a family member and not one of the suspects.

An Amber Alert was issued around 3 p.m. after the two kids were kidnapped from a DSHS office in Tacoma.

Police say 1-year-old Zariayah Brown and 3-year-old Deon Brown were taken by their mother, 21-year-old Tivice Brown, and the mother's boyfriend, 25-year-old Ahzariyah Yasharahla.

DSHS officials had taken the kids from their mother six days ago due to extensive abuse. The agency says it believes the children are in "grave danger."

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the mother and her boyfriend were at the DSHS office Wednesday morning for a supervised visit.

"During that visit they walked out of the facility with the kids," Fulghum said.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the people involved should call 911 immediately.

Kids found, mom denies allegations of abuse

Story Published: Feb 18, 2009 at 5:07 PM PST

Story Updated: Feb 18, 2009 at 11:14 PM PST

TACOMA, Wash. -- The two young children who were kidnapped by their own mother and her boyfriend on Wednesday afternoon have been found.
The kids were found inside the St. John Baptist Church at 2001 South "J" Street around 6:30 p.m. One-year-old Zariyah Brown and 3-year-old Deon Brown did not appear to be harmed.

The children were found in the company of their mother, 21-year-old Tivice Evans, and the mother's boyfriend, 25-year-old Ahzariyah Yasharahla.

DSHS officials had taken the kids from their mother six days ago due to extensive abuse. The agency says it believes the children are in "grave danger."

But Evans and Yasharahla said DSHS took the children under a false impression. Yasharahla, who is not the father of the two kids, said "the state (is) trying to kidnap our children."

Evans said social workers misinterpreted her son's skin condition and the resulting sores as signs of abuse by her boyfriend.

"What we ask them to do is just search his records," Yasharahla added.

Neighbors have said Yasharahla has violently beaten Deon. But Evans and Yasharahla said while they do discipline the boy, they never hit him.

"I tell him to get in push-up position. I don't put my hands on him," Yasharahla said.

Evans lamented over the fact that the state would be taking her children away from her for the second time.

"I don't want them to take my children. I don't want them to take my children," she said.

When police arrived to take the children away, Evans shed tears, giving each of her children a hug before they were taken away. As she watched her kids being driven away, Evans said, "(It's) like somebody is ripping my heart out and stepping on it."

An Amber Alert was issued around 3 p.m. after the two kids were kidnapped from a DSHS office in Tacoma.

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the mother and her boyfriend were at the DSHS office Wednesday morning for a supervised visit.

"During that visit they walked out of the facility with the kids," Fulghum said.

Evans later told KOMO News that she had decided to take the kids after talking to her son.

"I looked at my son, and the first thing he said was 'where have you been?'" she said, "like a stab in my heart. Where have I been, like I wanted this to happen, you know. And I asked him for a hug and he was hesitant.

"I asked him, 'what do you wanna do?' He said, 'take me home.' So I did," she said.

Evans said she didn't know taking the kids with her would be illegal. She said she was only thinking about their well-being at the time.

DSHS officials said the supervisor, who was in the room at the time, and the security guards could not do anything to stop the mother from taking her kids.

"Social workers don't have any authority to detain people. We can't physically stop them from going anywhere," said Nancy Sutton of DSHS. "So she talked to her, she called out to her, but she can't physically stop her from leaving. And it's the same with the security, the building security. They're not law enforcement officers."

Parents of Yasharahla told KOMO News that the Amber Alert was issued as the result of a big misunderstanding. Agatha Hill, the man's mother, said Child Protective Services illegally took the children away from their mother. Evans was only trying to get them back, Hill said.

"And when she went in there and they still did not have a court date, she said 'I have my children. I'm leaving. You took them illegally. I'm taking my children back,"' said Hill.

The pastor of St. John Baptist Church told KOMO News that police promised not to file kidnapping charges against the couple. Police have not confirmed this statement.

Evans' custody hearing will be held on Thursday in Tacoma.
