Law enforcement seeking two missing people

By JODI HAUSEN Chronicle Staff Writer

Gallatin County law enforcement officials are looking for two missing people in unrelated cases.

Karen Jodrey Evenson, 47, of Three Forks, was reported missing Monday morning by an unidentified caller who said Evenson had been missing for three days.

The caller said he had gone to look for her at Headwaters State Park, where she liked to walk, and found her 1998 white Dodge pick-up truck. But Evenson was nowhere in sight.

Gallatin County Search and Rescue looked for her unsuccessfully Monday and the Sheriff’s Office released a statement Wednesday saying it needed help finding Evenson.

She is described as being about 5-feet-5-inches tall with brown eyes and
gray hair. She was last seen around 12:30 a.m. Saturday in Three Forks.

Meanwhile, Bozeman police are looking into the disappearance of a 23-year-old Bozeman man, Adam Jacob Larkee, last seen leaving the Cannery on Main Street around 1:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13.

Larkee’s vehicle, a 1996 Honda Accord, is also missing. The car is either red or maroon with Wisconsin license plates.

Bozeman detective Cory Klumb said Wednesday that police do not suspect any foul play.

Larkee is an avid outdoorsman who “excitedly moved to Bozeman” about a year ago, a friend, Matthew Madsen, wrote in a statement submitted to the Chronicle this week.

There has not been any activity on Larkee’s bank or credit card accounts or his cell phone and the phone seems to have been turned off, Gannon Hester, another of Larkee’s friends, said Wednesday. He also did not pick up his paycheck this week, Hester said.

Friends are baffled by his disappearance.

“It’s just not like him to do that,” Hester said. “That’s why we’re all worried.”

Anyone with information on Larkee is urged to call the Bozeman Police Department at 582-2000 ext. 2 or CrimeStoppers at 586-1131.

Anyone with information about Evenson’s possible whereabouts is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 582-2100 or CrimeStoppers.

Cops comb state park for TF woman missing since Saturday
By Andy Malby, editor

Vehicle owned by Karen Evenson, 57, of Three Forks found at Headwaters

Law enforcement agents and Search and Rescue personnel combed the rivers and woods of Headwaters State Park for a missing Three Forks woman this week after the woman’s truck was found abandoned there, authorities said.

But no trace was found of Karen Jodrey Evenson, 57, who was reported missing Sunday evening.

According to a report by Three Forks police, Evenson was last seen at around 12:30 a.m. Saturday as she left her home, “heading to one of the bars in town.” She had recently filed for divorce from her husband, Myron Evenson, and “was agitated and upset over (the) pending divorce,” according to the report.

Evenson’s vehicle, a 1998 white Dodge pickup, was discovered Monday by a citizen who called 911 at around 10:45 a.m., saying the truck was parked near the campground at Headwaters State Park, about four miles northeast of Three Forks, according to the police report.

Search and Rescue was dispatched to the park Monday afternoon and conducted water, air and land searches through Thursday, Gallatin County Sheriff Jim Cashell said. Searchers had reported no sign of Evenson by press time Thursday afternoon.

“At this point in time, we know nothing,” Cashell said Thursday. “There’s still a lot of ice” on the rivers.

Evenson’s son, Andrew Evenson, said Thursday the family is hopeful and may print flyers to encourage people to come forward if they have information about the case.

Law enforcement, he said, are “treating it as a missing person, so people need to know about it, and the best thing you can do is get it out in the public eye. We’re going to keep looking for her.”

Evenson is described as 5’ 5” tall, 185 lbs., with brown eyes and shoulder-length, gray hair. She was last seen wearing a dark jacket with yellow in it. She is diabetic and may not have medication with her.

People with information about the case should call the sheriff at 582-2100, Crimestoppers (anonymously) at 586-1131 or the Three Forks Marshals at 285-3750.

Twenty years ago today Sharon Evenson, a 20-year-old Belgrade woman disappeared. A month later, her body was found, bound and weighted down with concrete blocks, on the banks of the West Gallatin River. Her murder was never solved.

On Thursday, crews continued to search for Karen Evenson, Sharon’s aunt, who was last seen at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Karen Evenson, 57, of Three Forks, was reported missing Monday by a caller who said he found her Dodge pick-up truck at Headwaters State Park, where she liked to walk. Evenson was nowhere in sight and there were no footprints in the snow, the caller said.

Sheriff Jim Cashell said Thursday he was confident the two cases are unrelated.

As for the unsolved murder of the younger woman, he said, “If there are any leads that come up, we follow them.”

Sharon Evenson disappeared on Feb. 20, 1989. A fisherman found her body face down on the riverbank on March 26, 1989. An autopsy determined that she had died from a harsh blow to the head.

Her death was deemed a homicide. Nobody was ever charged with the murder.

Sharon Evenson was the daughter of Barbara Evenson, Karen Evenson’s sister-in-law.

“It’s still hard,” Barbara Evenson said of her daughter’s unsolved murder. It gets a little easier every year, but the pain never really goes away.

She said Thursday she was baffled by her sister-in-law’s disappearance.

It has been more than a month since she’d spoken with her, in part because Karen Evenson had been spending a lot of time out of town tending to her mother, who has Alzheimer’s disease, she said.

“I just can’t understand what happened to Karen,” she said.

She also said Karen Evenson had recently filed for divorce from her husband, Myron Evenson. The Jan. 20 court filing indicates Karen Evenson cited irreconcilable differences, although her husband denied that claim in a filed response.

Myron Evenson could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.

Cashell said because Karen Evenson’s case is still under investigation, he would not comment on whether he thought there was foul play involved.

As for the 1989 murder, Chronicle stories from that time indicate that Mark Wade Dunse, a former Belgrade man who went to high school with Sharon Evenson, was questioned by Gallatin County officials after he was charged with the 1996 murder of a popular musician in Hawaii.

Similarities between the two murders, including the discovery of rocks in both victims’ mouths, raised questions for detectives.

Dunse was 28 when he was sentenced in 1997 to life without parole in Hawaii, where he remains in prison, according to authorities there. He was never charged with Sharon Evenson’s murder.

But Barbara Evenson still believes he had a role in her daughter’s death.

“I can’t prove it, but I believe Dunse was involved,” she said. “Someday this will be solved. I may not be here, but someday it will be, I hope.”

Autopsy: Missing TF woman drowned

By Andy Malby, editor

A Three Forks woman missing five weeks before her body was found Friday died from drowning, according to an autopsy conducted Monday.

Karen Evenson, 57, missing since Valentine’s Day, was found Friday afternoon in the Missouri River about 1.5 miles downriver from the Fairweather fishing access site at Clarkston — 11 to 13 miles from Headwaters State Park, where her pickup truck was found Feb. 16, Gallatin County Sheriff Jim Cashell said. The body was found on the west bank of the river, out of the water, and showed no sign of foul play.

"At this point in time I don’t see anything criminal, but we are going to complete the investigation," Cashell said.

Evenson’s son, Andrew Evenson, said the family was told Monday the cause of death was drowning. Cashell confirmed that, though he added: "We don’t have it in writing and we are waiting for toxicology."

Karen Evenson had recently filed for divorce from her husband, Myron Evenson, according to court records. She had recently moved to Chinook, where her mother and a brother live, and took a job at the grocery store there, her son said. She returned to Three Forks Feb. 13 to pick up a load of belongings.

According to police reports, Myron Evenson phoned Three Forks marshals Sunday evening, Feb. 15, and reported that Karen Evenson had left the family’s home after "heading to one of the bars in town."

She "was agitated and upset over (the) pending divorce," according to police reports.

Her pickup truck was found parked at the campground at Headwaters State Park the following day, and Search and Rescue conducted a search of the park by land, air and water, Cashell said. Subsequent searches were conducted in the weeks following her disappearance. A fisherman discovered her body Friday.

"It’s a difficult situation to accept," Andrew Evenson said. "This was not the outcome we wanted. For the last five weeks I’ve been all about finding mom, and finding out what happened to her. Now we’re just looking at a day for Karen."

That day will be Saturday, when her funeral is held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Three Forks. The service begins at noon.

Since friends and family weren't listened to, Karen didn't go to bars. It wasn't her vehicle that she drove. She didn't drive the truck. She had another car. She was just planning to use the truck to move. She had a place to live and a job to go back to. She was happy and looking forward to that.
