Gerardo Reyes-Campos, Destiny Reyes, Melanie Reyes

A man who was deported to Mexico last month and apparently returned illegally to the United States is suspected of kidnapping three children Thursday evening in Lancaster, S.C.
Authorities have issued an amber alert for the children, and they say the suspect might have fled to Monroe or Charlotte.
The kidnapping took place about 6 p.m. Thursday in Lancaster.
The sheriff's office in Lancaster County said authorities suspect Gerardo Reyes-Campos, 29, took the children after allegedly assaulting his estranged wife. Police say the wife later turned up in Columbia, where she sought medical help.
Here is a description of the three missing children:
-- Gerardo Huerto, 5, Hispanic male, 3 feet tall, 45 pounds.
-- Melanie Reyes, 3, Hispanic female, 3 feet tall, 45 pounds, black hair, brown eyes.
-- Destiny Reyes, 1, Hispanic female, 2 feet tall, 25 pounds, black hair, brown eyes.
Authorities say they think Reyes-Campos was driving a 1992 tan Isuzu Rodeo, with S.C. license tags 287HYN.
Amber alert signs across the Charlotte metro region are carrying this information today, and police in several counties have been put on alert.
Authorities say Reyes-Campos has a history of violent crime and should be considered dangerous. Anyone spotting the vehicle, the suspect, or the missing children should call 911 or contact the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, 803-283-3388.

S.C. sisters found safe, alleged abductor at large
Updated: 1 minute ago

Raleigh, N.C. — North Carolina authorities on Friday afternoon canceled an Amber Alert for two South Carolina sisters whose father allegedly had abducted them after stabbing their mother late Thursday.

Officials said that 1-year-old Destiny and 3-year-old Melanie Reyes had been safely found, along with another missing child, 5-year-old Gerardo Hurto. The children have been turned over to South Carolina authorities.

Their father, Gerardo Reyes-Campos, 29, remains at large.

South Carolina authorities said they believe Reyes-Campos stabbed his common-law wife, Diane Madisol Trejo, 22, in the neck and hands during a fight at a Lancaster County home Thursday evening. Authorities say Reyes-Campos then took the children.

Deputies went to the home after a neighbor called 911 around 8:15 p.m.

Trejo was flown to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia and was in critical but stable condition Friday. She suffered a 2½- to 3-inch-long stab wound on her neck.

Officials initially thought Reyes-Campos was headed to Monroe in Union County, N.C., but later said they believed he was headed south to Columbia, S.C. He may be driving a 1992, tan Isuzu Rodeo with South Carolina tag BJD-238.

Reyes-Campos is described as a white/Hispanic man, standing 5 feet 8 inches and weighing 170 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Deputies warned that Reyes-Campos is considered armed and dangerous. Members of the public should use extreme caution if they see him and should call 911 immediately.

Reyes-Campos' criminal record in South Carolina dates to 1996 and includes arrests for drunken driving, public drunkenness, domestic violence and cocaine possession.

Reyes-Campos, who is in the country illegally, was deported to Mexico in September, according to Lancaster Sheriff's Maj. David Belk. Authorities did not know he had returned to the U.S., Belk said.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office has warrants out against Reyes-Campos for assault and battery with intent to kill. The office plans to file additional charges against him in relation to the abduction.

Anyone with information should call Lt. Brown with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division immediately at 803-896-7133, or call 911 or *HP (*47) on cell phones.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Authorities say the man accused of abducting his daughters after stabbing their mother has been arrested.

State Law Enforcement Division spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said Wednesday 29-year-old Gerardo Reyes-Campos was arrested late Tuesday in Rock Hill.

Reyes-Campos' two daughters were found unharmed at a Lancaster apartment in February, a day after an Amber Alert was issued for them. Their mother, Diane Madisol Trejo, was taken to a hospital after police found her suffering from stab wounds to the neck and hands.

Reyes-Campos has been charged with assault and battery with intent to kill. Authorities at the Lancaster County jail say he is being held without bond.

Reyes-Campos is in the country illegally and was deported to Mexico in September. Authorities have said they did not know he had returned to the U.S.
