A South Lake Tahoe man was reported missing after apparently going backcountry skiing alone near Emerald Bay.
El Dorado County Sheriff's Office officials received word at approximately 6:30 p.m., Sunday, that Christopher Trethaway, 39, was missing.
Lt. Les Lovell says a car belonging to Trethaway was found at the Bayview trail head on Highway 89.
All indications are that he went skiing in the Maggie's Peaks area, Lovell says.
With avalanche danger extreme in the area, Lovell says a search was conducted Sunday evening, but suspended until Monday morning, when ground teams re-deployed.
The sheriff's office urged anyone using the backcountry to take precautions before they leave on a skiing trip.

Search-and-rescue teams are looking for a South Lake Tahoe man who has been missing for two days after going backcountry skiing.
Christopher Trethaway, 39, went backcountry skiing Saturday in the Maggie's Peaks area, said El Dorado County Sheriff's Lt. Les Lovell.
Authorities found his car parked at the Bayview Trailhead near Emerald Bay.
There was only one set of shoes inside the car, indicating that Trethaway is alone, he said.
Searchers began looking for Trethaway on Sunday night after being called about 6:30 p.m. by a friend of Trethaway who reported the skier missing.
Despite limited light and stormy conditions, rescue personnel searched the immediate area but did not locate Trethaway or information about his whereabouts.
The search was suspended until early this morning.
"We started the search at first light," Lovell said, estimating that the search team includes about a dozen people.
Weather and ground conditions are making for difficult search conditions.
"The area is very prone to avalanches," Lovell said.
The team has found evidence of several avalanches in the area today.
"There's a very icy snow pack and a lot of wet, heavy snow on top of it, so it tends to slide," he said.
Deputies also are working with Trethaway's friends and family to learn more about him and where he may be, Lovell said.
Search-and-rescue personnel also hope to use air support to search for Trethaway today.
Sheriff's officials are asking people using the backcountry to tell others where they intend to go, how long they plan to stay and how many people are in their party.

Search crews are braving extreme avalanche conditions and stormy weather to look for a missing backcountry skier in El Dorado County.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's department is looking for 39-year-old Christopher Trethaway of South Lake Tahoe. They got a report he was missing late Sunday night. He told friends he was going backcountry skiing on Saturday and has not been heard from since. His car was found at the Bayview Trailhead near Emerald Bay. Deputies believe he went backcountry skiing alone in the Maggie's Peaks area.

Deputies assembled a "Hasty Team" to search with what little light was left last night, but found nothing. Ground teams are back searching the area this morning and hope to get air support up later if weather conditions improve.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office says this case shows the importance of anyone using the backcountry, especially this time of year, of telling someone where you intend to go, how long you plan to stay, and how many persons are in your party.

UPDATED: 2:42 pm PST February 23, 2009

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -- A missing Lake Tahoe skier was found dead Monday morning at the scene of a fresh avalanche, authorities said.

The body of Christopher Trethaway, 39, was discovered near Cascade Lake, said Lt. Les Lovell of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.

Trethaway had apparently gone skiing alone in the backcountry Sunday and failed to return.

"We would also like to remind anyone using the backcountry, especially this time of year, of the importance of telling someone where you intend to go, how long you plan to stay, and how many persons are in your party," Lovell said in a prepared statement.

At about 9:25 a.m. Monday, searchers found clothing and equipment believed to be the property of Trethaway. Additional resources were committed to the area, and with the help of a search dog the remains of Trethaway were located. His body was removed from the area and next of kin were notified, Lovell added.

Authorities said Trethaway's car was earlier found by the Bayview Trailhead near Emerald Bay.

About 60 searchers were deployed, including members from the El Dorado County Search and Rescue unit, Placer County Sheriff's Office, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, Lake Valley Fire Department, Fallen Leaf Fire Department, Meeks Bay Fire Department, Tahoe Nordic Ski Team, California State Parks and the California Rescue Dog Association.
