Missing Vidor woman spotted, deputies narrow search

By AMY MOORE
February, 24, 2009

Charity Lynn Murray was only married one month and two days before she was reported missing.

Now almost a week later, investigators are closing in on where they think Murray might be.

Murray, 36, of Vidor, has been missing since last Thursday after she dropped her husband off at work. She was spotted Monday in Port Arthur and Murray's mother, Jannie Benson said she's trying to stay as positive as possible.

"They say God works in mysterious ways, so I guess this is not for me to understand," Benson said in a telephone interview. "It's best to have faith in God that we'll get her back."

Once before Murray has disappeared, her mother said.

Last year Murray was gone for seven months before she showed back up.

Murray's husband, Steven, has been actively involved in searching for his wife who he married on Jan. 17.

"I wouldn't say he was doing good, he's an emotional mess," Benson said of her son-in-law.

Murray was seen Monday near Seventh and Ninth Streets near El Paso Avenue in Port Arthur, an area where she knows people, Benson said.

Family and friends from Agape Christian Fellowship where the family attends church were heading to the area Tuesday to look for Murray, Benson said.

"First and foremost on everybody's heart is to find Charity," said The Rev. Jeff Anderson, a pastor at the church.

Anderson said if he could talk to Murray, he would tell her, "We love you and we want you back. Let us find you."

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is leading the search for Murray.

Deputies were "working a couple of leads" Tuesday, Brent Weaver with the Sheriff's Office said.

Murray is described as a white woman, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 150 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.

Murray was driving a white 2002 GMC four-door pickup truck last week when she disappeared. She was wearing a white Harley Davidson hooded zip up jacket with blue jeans.

Murray, whose maiden name is Charity Hughes, has a burn scar on her right calf and a tattoo of a parrot on her right shoulder.

Murray's criminal record between 1992 and 1997 includes arrests for possession of controlled substance, possession or selling of paraphernalia, assault with a deadly weapon and larceny of vehicle, all out of Oklahoma.
