Kelcey Fike (21) was found murdered in a burning trailer

Date: Jun 17, 2008
Cause of Death: Homicide
Location: Kearney, Nebraska

A reward fund has been established at a Wisconsin bank and Kearney police are offering up to $2,000 for information in the Kelcey Fike homicide investigation.

Fike, 21, moved to Kearney from Wisconsin about one year ago. She died Tuesday in a trailer house fire at R-Villa South. On Thursday, investigators ruled the death a homicide, saying Fike might have died before fire engulfed the bedroom of the trailer she shared with her boyfriend.

Kearney police are offering the $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Fike's death. People with information can contact KPD at 237-2104 or the Buffalo County Crimestoppers at 237-3424 or 866-237-3423.

Information also can be e-mailed to police at kelceyinfo@kearneygov.org or reported to Crimestoppers at www.crimestopper.buffalocounty-ne.us.

Wisconsin Community Bank in Monroe, Wis., has established the Kelcey Fike Reward Fund. Donations can be sent to the bank at P.O. Box 100, Monroe, WI, 53566, Attn. Wendy Ellingson.

The fire at Fike's home began about 4:50 a.m. Tuesday and engulfed her bedroom, but KPD Chief Dan Lynch said last week during a press conference that Fike could have died between 3 and 5 a.m.

"The information that we've received is the manner of death is consistent with a homicide and that's the way we're proceeding with the investigation," Lynch said.

Lynch did not discuss the manner in which Fike died.

"At this particular time the manner of death is not something we're going to talk about," Lynch said.

An autopsy was conducted Wednesday in Lincoln, but complete results may not be released for a few weeks.

Lynch said Fike's boyfriend is in the National Guard. He was out of state at the time of the fire and is not considered a suspect.

Murder victim's parents appeal for help finding killer
07/01/2008

KEARNEY - A coward. That's the word Randy and Mary Jo Fike called the person responsible for their daughter Kelcey Fike's violent death two weeks ago today.

"Everyone who currently knows this coward, and everyone who has the potential to come in contact with this coward, is at risk," a determined yet quivering Mary Jo Fike said at a press conference this morning at the Kearney/Buffalo County Law Enforcement Center.

Click here to see Hub Video coverage of the Fikes speaking at the press conference

Kelcey Fike, 21, was found early June 17 murdered and burned in her home at R-Villa South Mobile Home Court. Because of the circumstances surrounding her death, the Fikes and the Kearney Police Department believe she knew her attacker.

KPD Chief Dan Lynch didn't elaborate on those circumstances and also declined to go into detail about her death or if the fire was set to cover up the crime. Police haven't said if a weapon was used.

But Lynch and the Fikes pleaded with those who either have direct or indirect information about Kelcey Fike's death to come forward.

"Kelcey is not the only person in this community who knows this individual. And she is certainly not the last person in this community who has come into contact with this individual," Mary Jo Fike said.

Police have interviewed "a great number of people," Lynch said, either through investigative leads or tips from the public. There are no suspects in the case.

The last time anyone heard from Kelcey Fike, Lynch said, was within a few hours of her death. But police are looking for more information 24 to 48 hours before her death.

"We've got some gaps that we really can't account for, which concern us," he said.

Police are also hoping to identify additional people who knew Kelcey Fike, no matter how slightly.

The investigation now involves several additional agencies, including the FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Division, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the Nebraska State Patrol and the Mid-States Organized Crime Information Center in Springfield, Mo.

As she read from a prepared statement, Mary Jo Fike's voice trembled as she appealed to the public for help in solving her daughter's murder. She said her daughter was a "beautiful, young lady" who was shy when she first met people.

The Fikes say their daughter, less than 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing about 125 pounds, was a small person and wouldn't have had the strength to fight off the "extremely excessive violence" of her attacker.

Lynch hopes forensic evidence will help establish a profile of the killer and potential suspects. However, police are waiting for those results.

"It takes time. We can't do this like you can on TV in an hour. It just can't be done," Lynch said.

But with the lack of information in the case, Lynch and his investigators are concerned about the public's safety.

"The longer this individual is out and about, the more danger we believe they are to other people," he said." The longer we go, the more concern we have."

Kelcey Fike investigators continue searching
Sept. 17, 2008

KEARNEY — Neither pleas from her parents, friends and police nor the temptation of a $30,000 reward have brought the arrest of Kelcey Fike’s killer.

Three months ago today, Fike’s life was cut short at the hands of someone else. Kearney police continue to follow leads, conduct interviews and process evidence in hopes of finding the missing pieces of the puzzle.

Kelcey, 21, and her basset hound, Dante, died June 17 near a bedroom of the singlewide mobile home she shared with her boyfriend, Alex Young, at what was then R-Villa South Trailer Court 58. Her body was discovered after fire broke out in the house.

Randy and Mary Jo Fike, Kelcey’s parents, bought an ad that appears on page 2A today asking anyone with information in Kelcey’s death to come forward.

Here’s what is known about the events leading up to Fike’s death:

On June 16, Fike worked a shift at Bob’s Superstore where she was a cashier. Mary Jo and Kelcey had already sent several text messages throughout the day. Kelcey stopped by a gas station to fill up her car, then went home to feed Dante.

She called Mary Jo, and Kelcey was anxious for her upcoming trip to her hometown of Monroe, Wis., where she was supposed to meet her best friend Jami Graham and to celebrate her 21st birthday.

Kelcey said her goodbyes to her mother, including an “I love you” and “I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

Later that night, she and Alex, who was out of state for National Guard training, sent text messages.

In the early morning of June 17, someone entered Fike’s home and killed her. Police aren’t saying the method of her death, the time of her death or what evidence was collected from the scene.

That information is known only to the killer and those directly connected to the case.

Police have seized video surveillance from R-Villa South showing an unidentified vehicle leaving the area near Fike’s home. Another law enforcement agency is still trying to enhance that video so a detailed description of the vehicle can be obtained.

The Fikes remain faithful police will find their daughter’s killer.

“I think they’re very proactive about recognizing when there are resources out there that they should be calling on, and they do that,” Mary Jo said.

In the meantime they’re imploring people to be aware of their surroundings and watch out for one another. Kearney police are also asking people to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity, no matter how minute, especially prowlers or window peepers.

“I want to keep the community’s awareness that there is still a safety issue, and everyone needs to be mindful of that and watch out for one another. It could happen to anybody,” Fike said.

Kelcey Fike case aided by FBI
Dec. 11, 2008

KEARNEY — With the help of the FBI, the Kearney Police Department has developed “persons of interest” in the Kelcey Fike murder investigation.

Within the last few weeks, FBI investigators have been providing assistance to Kearney police in the form of additional forensic testing, assisting with interviews and making all of the FBI resources available.

The FBI laboratory in Quantico, Va., also is processing evidence in Fike’s case, although media representative Sandy Breault declined to specify what evidence.

KPD Investigator Tim Beckenhauer also declined to elaborate on the people of interest in the case, saying releasing that information could jeopardize the case. No suspects have been named.

Nearly six months ago, on June 17, Fike, 21, was murdered in her home at R-Villa South No. 58. After a fire was discovered, police and the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department were called to the scene at 4:50 a.m.

Police and Buffalo County Attorney Shawn Eatherton have declined to say how Fike died or to release the results of her autopsy. A $30,000 reward is still available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her death.

There will be a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds Ag Pavilion in memory of Fike.

Anyone with information in Fike’s death is asked to KPD at 237-2104, the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office at 236-8555 or Crimestoppers at 237-3424.

Authorities Won't Let Murder Case Go Cold
Dec. 22, 2008

It's a case authorities aren't letting go cold.

Six months ago, a Kearney woman was found dead in her mobile home.

Now authorities want the public to know they're still actively investigating the murder of Kelcey Fike.

On June 17th, authorities were called to a burning mobile home around 5:00 a.m.

There, 21-year-old Fike was found dead.

The trailer where police say Fike was found murdered is long gone, but authorities won't let the case fade away without an arrest.

"Kearney is a small town. It's a safe community. Crimes like this don't happen very often and it's not right," said Kearney Police Sgt. Mike Young. "It's a crime that we need to solve."

That's why Kearney police are using every possible resource, including outside agencies like the state patrol, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and even Kansas State University.

"We're not afraid to look for outside help. We have a lot of resources ourselves," said Young. "We have very highly trained people within our house, but it's always good to include other people too on major cases."

And include tips from the community.

"We believe that there are people or there is a person or persons that have information about this case," said Young. "We want to encourage those people to come forward with information."

Authorities say that's the key to calling this case closed.

"I believe that we will solve this case," said Young.

There is a $30,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Authorities say even if you think your information is small or insignificant, it could be what they are looking for.

Fike's murder still unsolved, tops '08 safety stories
Dec. 30, 2008

KEARNEY — Pleadings from her parents, a candlelight vigil, a paid advertisement and the enticement of a $30,000 reward have not yielded much information in the June murder of Kelcey Fike.

For more than six months Kearney Police have been working to find out who killed the 21-year-old Kearney woman and why. But one thing is for sure, a young, beautiful and vivacious woman is dead at the hands of a ruthless and cowardly killer.

So what could Fike have known, seen, or done, that was worth losing her life for? And why hasn’t anyone come forward with information in her death? Are people afraid of retribution if they talk to police? Did the killer act alone? Or is the killer even in Kearney?

These are questions only Fike’s killer, and possible those directly involved in her death, know. And they’re questions police have diligently been trying to answer for the last six months.

“We will continue to work this case until someone is brought to justice,” said Tim Beckenhauer, the lead investigator.

Fike died June 17 near a bedroom of her mobile home at R-Villa South Trailer Court 58 that she shared with her then-boyfriend, Alex Young, also of Kearney. Her body was discovered early that morning after fire broke out in the house.

Police have video surveillance showing an unidentified vehicle leaving the area around the time the fire was reported. The FBI is enhancing the photo to get a detailed description of the vehicle.

Here’s what police are telling the public about the events leading to Fike’s death:

On June 16, Fike worked a shift at Bob’s Superstore where she was a cashier. Fike’s mother, Mary Jo, and Kelcey had sent each other several text messages throughout the day. Kelcey stopped by a gas station to fuel her car, then went home to feed Dante, her basset hound.

She called Mary Jo. Her mother said Kelcey was anxious for her upcoming trip to her hometown, Monroe, Wis., where she planned to meet her best friend Jami Graham and to celebrate her 21st birthday.

Kelcey said her goodbyes to her mother, including an “I love you” and “I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

Later that night, she and Alex, who was out of state for National Guard training, exchanged text messages.

In the early morning of June 17, someone entered Fike’s home and killed her.

Concerned that saying too much could undermine the investigation, police and Buffalo County Attorney Shawn Eatherton have refused to say when and how Fike died, or reveal what evidence was collected from the scene and what the autopsy found.

Much of that information is known only to the killer and possibly others connected to the case.

Police have interviewed countless of Fike’s friends and acquaintances and have collected numerous pieces of evidence that have been sent for testing, including some to the FBI academy in Quantico, Va.

The Fikes and police continue to believe someone other than the killer knows the truth about their daughter’s death. It’s just a matter of whether they’re courageous enough to come forward.

Anyone with information about Fike’s death is asked to contact Kearney Police at 308-237-2104, the Buffalo County Sheriff’s office at 308-236-8555, or Crimestoppers at 308-237-3424. Information also can be e-mailed to police at kelceyinfo@kearneygov.org.

How very sad and scary. That town must really be on edge about a killer be losose. My prayers go out to the parents. This must have be so terrorizing for Kelcey. I am glad the police are staying on top of this case. I worry about this case because I am wondering if the killer thinks he has gotten away with this and will try this again. I pray the police find him before he finds another victim.

Kelcey's Fike's Parents Create Foundation

April 13, 2009 11:28 PM EDT
April 20, 2009 11:15 PM EDT

Randy and Mary Jo Fike are creating a non-profit foundation that will reach much farther than their daughter's case.

It should have been like any other day but on July 17, 2008, Kelcey Fike was murdered.

"There's not a minute that goes by that I don't think about her," said Mary Jo Fike, Kelcey's mother.

While they will never get to see the woman she would have become, they have found a way to honor the girl she was.

"We did not want this situation to be the defining moment in her life," explained Mary Jo.

The Fikes launched a foundation, along with its website, to bring justice for Kelcey and justice for all victims of crimes.

"We decided that we would work towards helping others and making a difference," said Mary Jo.

She knows all about loss and the sudden stack of burial bills that comes with it. According to the Federal Trade Commission, most funerals run well over $10 thousand. It's a burden the Fike's foundation will help ease.

Mary Jo said, "Unfortunately, there are families out there who would not have those resources to be able to pay for funerals, cemetery plots and monuments."

Then, there's the wait time. The Fikes say the state crime lab is so backed up it would have taken nine months for the DNA results. Luckily, police paid for a private lab and heard back in just two weeks.

"We want to be able to request grant money that we would be able to provide to small town law enforcement agencies," said Mary Jo.

Randy Fike, Kelcey's father, asked, "Can you imagine waiting nine months and then finding out you've got nothing?

Through their foundation, the Fikes also want to strengthen victims' rights and support crime and violence prevention programs. It's their way of keeping their memories of Kelcey alive.

"She was a lovely lovely girl. Beautiful young lady," said her mother.

Reporter's Notes:
The Fikes are in the beginning stages with this foundation and website. If you'd like to check it out, just go to their website.... www.justiceforkelcey.com.

Flowers for Kelcey

03/23/2009
Updated 03/24/2009 01:06:03 PM CDT

Our beautiful Kelcey Fike would have turned 22 on March 26. She would have had a party with her family. She would have received cards, gifts and flowers from her loved ones.

She would have, if someone had not taken her from us. That evil person is still out there endangering everyone he comes in contact with.

We still believe there is at least one credible witness out there. Please come forward. As her parents have pleaded, “She is waiting for justice.”

Can’t someone help make that happen for Kelcey and for all of us? This year she will still get flowers for her birthday. They will be on her grave along with our tears.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Ginger Brewer is Kelcey Fike’s aunt, Bernetta Johnson is her grandmother. Investigations continue into Fike’s June 17, 2008 murder. A reward of $30,000 has been offered for information that helps solve the case.

Police Committed to Solving Fike Case

Tips come in almost every day to the Kearney Police Department about Kelcey Fike's homicide. But, for 10 months now, none of them have lead to her killer.

When police responded to a fire at the Villa South Trailer Court on June 17, 2008 and found Kelcey Fike's body inside, they knew cracking the case would be difficult. What they didn't know was that nearly a year later they still wouldn't have a suspect.

Mary Jo Fike, Kelcey's mom, said, "We absolutely know the day will come when this individual is brought to justice. We have no doubt about that."

At first, police concentrated on the people closest to Kelcey. After all, the killer knew where she lived and that her boyfriend was out of town. But now, after hundreds of police interviews, there is a new theory.

"Someone who she had casual contact with through work or someone through town. It's looking more and more like that," said Fike.

Dan Lynch, Kearney's police chief, said, "We have some physical evidence that would be available. We just need people to compare it to."

There have been DNA tests, dozens of lie detector tests and a surveillance tape, but police have come up empty handed. Yet, the chief said they won't give up.
"Right now, we're going back over everything that we've done and everybody that we've talked to again-- some people for the fourth and fifth time-- and we'll continue to do that until something comes up," said Lynch.

In the meantime, the Fike family is at a loss as to who would want to hurt their daughter.

"We're not aware of anyone Kelcey had trouble with. Anyone who ever met her, she was always able to put a smile on people's faces," said Fike.

Fike's greatest fear is that the killer is still out there somewhere.
Fike said, "This level of violence doesn't occur once. Individuals capable of this level of violence don't just do it once."

Reporter's Notes:

If you have any information on the case, call the police department at (308)237-2104 or Crimestoppers at (308)237-3424. You can remain anonymous.

Parents of Kelcey Fike Share Memories

Kelcey Fike was the youngest of four children and was adored by her family. But, her young life was cut tragically short. Nearly 10 months ago, Fike was found murdered in her Kearney home. Police are still searching for her killer.

Kelcey's killer robbed Mary Jo and Randy Fike of their youngest daughter, but he couldn't steal their memories.

Mary Jo Fike, Kelcey's mom, said, "I can't tell you the number of times during the day we got text messages or phone calls. Anything that would happen she would immediately pick up the phone."

Randy Fike, Kelcey's dad, said, "She was a great green bean eater. So, every time I eat green beans I think of her. It was our little thing. Eating green beans. It's a small thing.

Born in Tucson, Arizona, "Kelc" or "Kelcey Renee," when her parents were angry, knew her place in the family.

"She was very funny. Liked to be the center of attention," said Mary Jo.

She spent years taking dance and piano lessons and was quite the performer.

"The way she would come in the house. She'd burst through that back door and there'd be a resounding hello, which was the signal for everyone to drop everything and pay attention to me."

Yet, Kelcey was compassionate. She suffered from severe migraines and knew what it was like to live with pain.

Mary Jo said, "She always went out of her way. When she thought there was someone who needed help, she was there."

"If she saw somebody that was bullying somebody, she would probably jump right in the middle of it. She couldn't stand it," added Randy.

Kelcey had a long term boyfriend, Alex. Her mom says the were trying to find their place in the world.

"She wanted to find a job that, in her words, would allow her to sit down once in awhile," laughed Mary Jo.

"For a brief instant, there's a bit of happiness," said Mary Jo. "But, then you remember she's just not here anymore."

The Fike's have found their own way to keep Kelcey close.

"I walk my dog every morning and Oscar and I talk to her. Say hi," said Randy.

Statement from Kelcey Fike's Parents

Posted: July 1, 2008 10:38 AM EDT

The following is a statement given to the press by Kelcey Fike's parents on July 1, 2008:

Thank you for allowing us to speak with you today. We will be reading a statement, but at this time we will not be answering any questions.

We are Randy and Mary Jo Fike. We are the parents of Kelcey Fike

First, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our friends and the communities of Kearney, NE and Monroe, WI for the love and support that our entire family has received during this very difficult time. We are turly overwhelmed by all of you.

Second, we would like to that all of the law enforcement professionals who are so diligently working to solve the crime of our daughter's murder. We are so grateful for them all.

Two weeks ago today, our daughter was taken from us. Due to the ongoing investigation, the Police have not been able to share with us the details of her death, but we know that it involved extremely excessive violence.

Kelcey was a beautiful young lady who was very shy when people first met her. Two years ago, when were contemplating the move to Kearney, Kelcey was very unsure about moving here. It was a new place, and being the shy introvert, she natually was concerned about moving and making new friends. But, since both Randy and I had found good employment opportunities here and it allowed us to be closer to other family members, she decided to move with us. Once here, Kelcey found many opportunities as well. Friends, employement and the potential for lasting love. Kelcey was a very spirited and fun person. She had the most beautiful smile and contagious laugh. She would bat her baby blue eyes when asking for money and would frequently raid our pantry and refrigerator looking for the ingredients to make a tater tot hot dish for Alex.

She was less than 5'5" tall and weighed about 125 lbs and she would be mortified to know that I just shared that with you, but, it is very important for everyone to understand that Kelcey was small in stature and did not have the physical strength to defend herself against this attack. Randy and I look around this community and see so many beautiful young ladies, just like our Kelcey. And in a few more weeks there will be so many more unsuspecting young women arriving in town. The Police have indicated that Kelcey knew her attacker and we believe that to be true. The other thing we know to be true is that Kelcey is not the only person in this community who knows this individual and she is certainly not the last person in this community who has come in contact with this individual. Everyone in this community is at risk. Everyone who currently knows this coward and everyoune who has the potential to come in contact with this coward is at risk. We do not know when or where this person will strike again, we only know that it is a matter of time.

We are asking for the community's assistance in the capture of this individual so that no other family in this community or anywhere else goes through what we have. As a parent, there is no greater loss than the loss of a child. Randy and I were not given the opportunity to say good-bye to our daughter. We were not given the opportunity to tell her one last time how much she is loved. We were not given the opportunity to protect her. But as a community we have the opportunity, the ability, and the responsibility to protect one another. We are asking that anyone who has information about this crime, please bring it forward now. Please help us in making sure that the individual who murdered our daughter is brought to justice. Please help us in making sure that this never happens again.

Thank you.

(6/17/2008) By James Wilcox - A deadly fire in Kearney claims the life of a young woman. Police confirmed the woman found dead is 21 year old Kelcey Fike of Kearney. Fike's body was found around 5:00 Tuesday morning inside a mobile home at the R–Villa South Trailer Court.

It is unknown if that is where she lived.

Firefighters came across the body after putting the fire out.

Authorities said it was contained to a back bedroom.

The Kearney Police department is investigating.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine how Fike died.

That is set for Wednesday.

Trailer Fire Death Ruled Homicide

Kearney, Neb.

Kelcey Fike, 21, was found dead in her home Tuesday morning when firefighters responded to a fire there. Now authorities are calling it a homicide.

"The information we've received is the manner of death is consistent with a homicide, and that's the way we're proceeding with the investigation," said Dan Lynch, Kearney Chief of Police.

Police say they don't have any suspects at this time, but they do have several people of interest they need to speak with.

"Right now we're just trying to work that group down into fewer, if you will. A lot of people that we can relate to the area, relate to the scene and relate to her and we're working through those as we can," Lynch said.

Neighbors said it's scary to know that a homicide took place just down the street, but police say the community of Kearney is safe from a possible suspect.

"I don't think they should be worried about a suspect that might be a danger to the remaining public," Lynch said.

But officials do want the public's help to solve this case.

"People that did know Kelcey, people that know the area, anybody that might have seen something or has heard something, whether it be a comment from somebody or anything else can certainly call the office," he said.

Preliminary autopsy results put the victim's time of death between three and five Tuesday morning. The trailer fire was reported shortly before five. Authorities say final autopsy results may not be available for a month.

Police say Fike did have a boyfriend, but he was out of state at the time of her death.

If you have information regarding this case you're asked to call the Kearney police department at 308-237-2104.
