Law enforcement continues to investigate discovery of body

Little information was divulged during a news conference Wednesday regarding the identity and the gender of a body discovered near Dow City late Tuesday afternoon.

Crawford County Sheriff Jim Steinkuehler conducted the news conference at City Hall in Dow City shortly after 11:30 a.m.

When asked if the body was of a man or a woman, Steinkuehler stated, "We don't know now."

The body is at the State Medical Examiner's office in Ankeny.

Asked if there was identification on the body, Steinkuehler said, "Nothing that I can tell you. The medical examiner will be doing that and finding if there is. We haven't heard anything at this time."

At the beginning of the news conference, Steinkuehler read a prepared release that gave the following details:

- At approximately 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday, an unidentified body was discovered in rural Crawford County south of Dow City.

- Law enforcement continues to conduct interviews and collect evidence in the case.

- The Crawford County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) are in the early stages of the investigation.

- The DCI crime scene team from Des Moines is also assisting in the investigation - An autopsy will be conducted at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny in the near future.

Steinkuehler said no additional information would be released at this time.

He did ask that anyone who knows of a missing person to contact the Crawford County Sheriff's Office at 712-263-2146.

Reporters from three television stations, three newspapers and one radio station attended the press conference. In addition, several members of the general public stood just inside the door at city hall to listen to the press conference.

Reporters asked Steinkuehler questions pertaining to the identity of the person or persons who discovered the body, what they were doing at the time of the discovery, whether the remains were decomposed, and whether the discovery was linked to a report of a young missing man. Steinkuehler said he could not respond because of the ongoing investigation.

Steinkuehler said the body was found south of Dow City on a gravel road.

Steinkuehler said he could not divulge on which side of the road the body was located but did say it was found in a ditch. He estimated the ditch to be approximately 20 feet deep.

A source informed the Bulletin and Review that the body had been found on Two Mile Road approximately two and one-quarter miles south of the intersection with Highway 30. Two Mile Road is located two miles west of Dow City.

A source also told the Bulletin and Review that the body was located on the west side of the road, that it was a non-Caucasian male, that the body appeared mummified and that it appeared it had been in the ditch all winter.

When asked if law enforcement was treating the situation as a homicide, Steinkuehler stated, "We're waiting for the outcome of the medical examination to let us know and determine that. We are not at this time."

Courtney Greene, spokeswoman for the DCI, indicated to the Bulletin and Review that the autopsy would be performed tomorrow (Thursday, February 26).

Steinkuehler said he would contact the media when more information becomes available.

An anonymous source close to the investigation tells KMEG 14 and KPTH FOX 44 News the body is that of a male. However at this point, the age is unknown. And on the record, officials are saying very little, leaving locals near Dow City, Iowa, wondering what exactly happened in their small town.
"In a small town you don't expect things like that here," says Area Resident Leonard Hassett.

Body found near Dow City to be autopsied

DOW CITY - An autopsy was to be performed this morning to determine the cause of a death for a body found near Dow City on Tuesday.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office said the body was found in a ditch by two young girls walking outside of Dow City about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities aren't releasing the gender of the body or any other physical descriptions, and they haven't said whether the case is being treated as a homicide.

Sheriff Office spokesman Mike Bremser said the autopsy was being performed at the State Medical Examiner's Office at Ankeny and the office hoped to get results today or Friday.

Crawford County had no recent missing-person reports, and authorities there have no idea as to the victim's identity, Bremser said.

"We're sending out basic descriptors (of the body) to the rest of Iowa and surrounding states and hope to get some feedback," he said.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting in the investigation.

I suppose they have their reasons for not releasing the gender, but it seems like it would help them avoid a lot of unnecessary contacts from people who are missing a family member.

Man arrested in Oklahoma for western Iowa murder
Friday, September 4, 2009

Authorities in Oklahoma have arrested a man wanted for a February murder in western Iowa. Twenty-year-old Luis Trujillo-Mendez will be charged with first-degree murder for the death of 27-year-old Lorenzo Nambo Garcia of Denison.

Garcia's body was found in a ditch near Dow City in late February. Crawford County Sheriff James Steinkueler says Garcia disappeared on January 5th.

"On this date, a witness reports seeing...an acquaintance of the victim driving by the residence on two occasions," Steinkueler says. "...The witness left the area on personal business and never saw the victim again."

The sheriff says about a week after Garcia's body was found authorities obtained a warrant and searched Trujillo's residence in Denison."In Luis Trujillo's residence, a pistol and ammunition were recovered. A wallet belonging to the victim was also recovered during the search," the sheriff says. "On March 16, 2009 a vehicle belonging to the relative of Luis Trujillo was identified as the vehicle Luis Trujuillo was driving the night the victim disappeared."

That evidence was processed at the state crime lab. "It was determined that the ammunition found in Luis Trijuillo's residence was consistent with the bullets found in the victim's body. Ballistics of the bullets found in the victim's body matched those of the pistol found in Luis Trijuillio's residence," the sheriff says. "Inside the vehicle...DNA was recovered that positively matched that taken from the body of the victim."

Crawford County Attorney Michael Mundt says putting all those pieces together is a credit to the law enforcement officials involved. "For weeks before they found the body, I frankly (had) little hope that they would be able to unravel this case," Mundt says.

Trijuillio faces life in prison without parole if found guilty on the first degree murder charge. He's currently being held in Oklahoma and will have to be brought back to Iowa to face the charge. If you have any information in this case you are asked to call the Crawford County Crimestoppers Hotline at (712)263-4050.
