CLAY COUNTY, FL -- John Nelson kissed his wife good-bye on his way out the door of their home in Doctors Inlet, and hasn't been seen since.
Nelson was heading to Fleming Island High School to be a judge in the Clay County History Fair, but never showed up.
His wife hasn't heard from him, police have verified he isn't in jail, no area hospitals have seen him, and his bank cards haven't been used.
His cell phone goes right to voice mail and none of his friends have heard anything either.
"We believe that he hasn't gone away. He's not taken off. Something's happened," said Bill Todor, a neighbor and friend.
Nelson's wife tells First Coast News her husband is semi-retired and was previously an executive at IBM.
She says John planned to spent a year and a half renovating their house on Doctors Lake.
She says she's never gone more than a few hours without speaking to her husband of 19 years.
Active in the community, Nelson is a member of the Clay County Historical Commission and the Doctors Lake Association.
"Any information we could get on him at all would be extremely helpful. Right now, we literally have nothing," said Todor.
Neighbors handed out flyers and drove the route Nelson might have taken to the school, without finding anything.
Nelson's wife told First Coast News she noticed strange sounds in her home the night after her husband disappeared.
Earlier in the day, she discovered that an interior window was broken.
Also, she says someone poured glue all over her car in the overnight hours between Monday and Tuesday.
"Right now, we don't suspect foul play, but certainly it is unusual--the circumstances surrounding his disappearance," said Sgt. Dan Mahla, with the Clay County Sheriffs Office.
Deputies were the home off and on throughout Wednesday, gathering information on Nelson.
"We're trying to retrace his steps from yesterday morning. Visit with people who live in the area--people he associates with--to see if they've seen or heard from him," said Sgt. Mahla.
Nelson was last seen leaving the Doctors Inlet neighborhood right before 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.
He drives a maroon-red 2003 Toyota Tundra with an access cab and a step-up bed.
Nelson's wife remembers her husband wearing jeans, and carrying slacks and a dress shirt to wear at the school meeting.
If you know anything that could help find John Nelson, call the Clay County Sheriffs Office or our partner First Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477).
You will remain anonymous and could receive a cash reward.
