In a dark, dingy trailer littered with animal feces, four pit bulls tore into one of their own, stopping only after puncturing the unfortunate dog’s heart.
“He was dead even before we pulled him out,” said Mark Estrada, an animal welfare investigator sent to the trailer in south suburban Robbins last week to rescue the dogs inside.
As Estrada and other investigators explored further, they found a female dog protecting a lumpy pile of blankets tucked under a bed.
One investigator pulled back the blankets to reveal five female Staffordshire terrier puppies — each just a few weeks old and all seemingly healthy.
