COPIAH COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - The Copiah County Sheriff's Department is investigating the discovery of a body found floating in the Pearl River.
The body was found by a fisherman just north of Highway 28, near Georgetown, around mid-morning. The Crystal Springs Dive Team was called in to help pull the body from the water.
Investigators say the body is that of a middle aged black male, and was badly decomposed. His identity is not known at this time.
"The Sheriff of Simpson County is here with me. He has no one missing, in his county that he knows of, neither do we here. Were gonna be checking in Jackson and surrounding areas about missing persons. We'll know more after autopsy and dental record comparisons if we get some" said Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones.
The body will be taken to the state crime lab for an autopsy.
Sheriff Jones says the river is at a high level, and the current is pretty fast, which means the body could have floated for a great distance, before it was discovered.

Copiah County authorities are trying to identify a body found in a river just north of Mississippi 28 in Georgetown.

The body was described by coroner Stuart Ellis as a 5-foot-2 or 5-foot-3 black male weighing about 150 pounds. He was wearing jeans and tennis shoes.Ellis said some fishers saw the body floating in the water about 10:30 a.m. Monday and called authorities. The coroner estimated the man had been dead about a week but would not say whether the body showed any signs of trauma.

ID of found body still unknown

Copiah County officials are still working to learn the identity of a man whose body was pulled from the Pearl River Monday just north of Highway 28 near Georgetown.

Copiah County Sheriff's Department officials have said the body, which investigators are reasonably sure is that of a middle-aged black man, could have flowed quite a distance down the river, as it tends to flow deep and wide.

Coroner Ellis Stuart said the autopsy conducted earlier this week offered no clue on who the man might be or where he might have come from.

"At this point, we're not able to release the cause of death because we have not been able to identify the person yet," Stuart said.

In addition, he said Saturday, dental records do not match any missing persons that have been compared at this point. Therefore, DNA samples are being sent away for analysis.

"We've sent it to a DNA lab outside Reno, Nev., where we have our DNA stuff done," Stuart said. "We'd tried to get a dental match, which is quicker, but couldn't locate any dental records or medical records that help us."

There is one possible identity that officials still haven't ruled out, but Stuart said they are waiting for the results on the DNA work.

"We do have a person of interest that when we get our DNA stuff back we'll see if we can match it to that person," he said. "It'll be two to three weeks before we get that back."

Stuart did not divulge the identity of the person of interest, but he did say he would release more information when it becomes available.

"If you watch 'CSI' or 'Forensic Files,' you'd think we'd have it back before we get to back to the office, but it's not like that in real life," he said.

Copiah officials try to ID body found in river
March 31, 2009

Authorities think they know the identity of a corpse found in the Pearl River in Copiah County last week but are waiting for confirmation.

“Wednesday and Thursday we tried to run down dental and medical records for a person we have an interest in,” Copiah County Coroner Ellis Stuart said today.

Officials were unable to obtain the records and have since sent bone and tissues samples to the state lab for DNA testing.

“For bone, the results take two to three weeks,” Stuart said. “If we can get DNA from the tissue, the results could come back sooner.”

Authorities are not saying yet whether they suspect foul play in the man’s death.

Fisherman saw the body floating in the river just north of Mississippi 28 in Georgetown and notified authorities on March 23.

The body was described by the coroner as a 5-foot-2 or 5-foot-3 black man weighing about 150 pounds. He was wearing jeans and tennis shoes.

Stuart estimated he had been dead about a week.

Body found in river Jackson man's
April 1, 2009

A body found last week in the Pearl River in Copiah County has been identified and his death has been ruled a homicide.

DNA samples confirmed the man was 26-year-old Sherrell Hogan of Jackson, Copiah County Coroner Ellis Stuart said today. He had one gunshot wound to the chest.

“He was reported missing to the Jackson Police Department by his family,” Stuart said. He had been missing since March 6.

Hogan’s body was found on March 23 by a fisherman who saw him floating just north of Mississippi 28 in Georgetown.

“We don’t think the crime occurred in Copiah County,” Stuart said. “Since there was an active missing person case with JPD, we’re sending our information to them.”

JPD spokesman Lt. Jeffery Scott said he could not confirm whether JPD will take over the homicide investigation.
