Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Sheriff’s Deputies are searching a remote area of Marcellus for the driver of a vehicle involved in an early morning crash on West Seneca Turnpike.
Around 3am, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputies were called out to a one-car crash along the 2800 block of West Seneca Turnpike, where a pickup truck struck a utility pole.
Deputies say the pickup truck was traveling east on West Seneca Turnpike when it drifted off the roadway, flipped over and came to rest when striking a utility pole. Neighbors told deputies that they heard the crash and saw two subjects running from the scene and heading into a wooded area.
Robert Kilcoyne, 24, of Marcellus, was found a short distance from the crash scene and transported to Community General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Sheriff’s Deputies say Kilcoyne, who is believed to be the passenger of the pickup, appeared to be intoxicated, and was uncooperative with the investigation.
Deputies say Kyle Connor, 24, was believed to have been driving the truck at the time of the crash.
Due to the cold weather and the uncertainty of Connor’s physical condition, a search was launched to locate him.
Currently volunteers from several volunteer fire departments are searching the wooded area near the crash scene for Connor.
Anyone with information regarding Connor’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office by calling 425-2111.

Sheriff explains reasons for searching for missing driver

Marcellus (WSYR-TV) - The investigation continues into an early morning accident Tuesday that sparked an all-out, full-day search for the driver.
After nearly 1,500 man hours of searching, Kyle Connor was found with only minor injuries.
Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh says even though Connor was hiding from rescuers, they had no choice but to continue looking for him.
Search and rescue teams from three counties were in on the search for Connor. His badly smashed-up truck had been found early Tuesday morning along with his passenger, but there were no signs of Connor.
Assuming the worst, the Sheriff's office launched the full search, even though they knew they were probably looking for someone who didn't want to be found.
"Better to search and have it turn out the way it did than not to have searched and have him laying seriously injured, perhaps dying. Under those circumstances, we couldn't take that chance," says Walsh.
The search really started to spread out from where the accident actually happened along Route 175 in Marcellus early Tuesday morning; it went on for several hours, and when the search finally was wrapping up, they found Connor hiding under some brush about a half mile down the road from the crash.
"We were pulling people from wherever we had spare bodies that we could put on the search. I'm more concerned about a lot of the volunteer agencies, a lot of the volunteers who came out and gave up a day of employment," Walsh says.
Walsh says it will be hard to tally up the full cost of the search, and he says there's really no way to make Connor compensate the department for it. So he says, if nothing else, they'll have to consider this a valuable training exercise.
Walsh says his office is still trying to determine what charges Connor will face. He says they will likely include leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license. Connor's license had been previously taken away.
