NAVARRO COUNTY (March 24, 2009)--A 72-year-old Athens man and his 17-year-old grandson are missing after a day at Richland Chambers Lake in Navarro County.
Navarro County Chief Deputy Sheriff Mike Cox told News 10 James D. King and his grandson Jerrod Rachael were last heard from when the teenager called his parents at about 3 p.m. Monday.
King is retired and Rachael is a senior at Crossroads High School in Henderson County.
Cox said worried family members notified the sheriff's office at about 6 p.m. Monday after searchers found the pair's pontoon boat afloat and upright but unoccupied.
Texas Department of Public Safety aircraft searched the lake into the night on Monday with forward-looking infrared radar and again on Tuesday morning (http://www.kwtx.com/home/headlines/41765492.html#) but failed to find the two.
Cox said game wardens from the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, DPS officers and sheriff's deputies are involved in a recovery effort now.
The search is focused near the dam, which is on the south end of the lake, near the place were U.S. Highway 287 crosses Richland Chambers Lake.
Cox said King was a regular fisherman on the lake and "he knew that lake very well."
Cox said winds gusted between 30 and 35 mph on Monday afternoon and winds of that degree "make that lake really rough."
Searchers, meanwhile, continued to look for the body of a man who authorities think drowned after a boat capsized last week on Lake Belton.
Jarod Dawkins, 27, of Temple (http://www.kwtx.com/home/headlines/41765492.html#) has been missing since the accident on March 17.

Crews are expected to return to the Richland Chambers Reservoir in Navarro County this morning to search for a boater and his grandson who were reported missing Monday.
Richland Chambers Reservoir in Navarro County
Searchers found the pontoon boat of 72-year-old Jerry King adrift Tuesday evening.
Authorities say King was with his 17-year-old grandson Jerrod Rachel, who often drove the light brown boat when the two fished on the lake which is southeast of Corsicana in Navarro County.
“The key was turned off and the throttle was in neutral,” said Capt. Gary Dugan of Texas Parks and Wildlife. “We're assuming they didn't get thrown out of the boat because normally that doesn't happen.”
Lifejackets found on board still wrapped in their plastic, Capt. Dugan said.
Searchers aren't sure what went wrong, but speculate one might have fallen overboard and the other went in after him.
"It's a beautiful day, but the water temperature is still around 55 to 60 degrees on the surface,” Capt. Dugan said. “When one jumps in the water, the first thing that happens is the muscles contract. You could be a good swimmer but you can't because your muscles tighten up."
Dugan said searchers would return for a third day of searching at 7 a.m. today.

I don't understand why men refuse to wear a life jacket. So many lives could be saved each year if only they would wear one.
