Plainfield police seeking information about missing man

By MARK SPIVEY • Staff Writer • March 25, 2009

PLAINFIELD — Police are seeking the public's help in finding a city man who went missing nearly two weeks ago, officials said.
According to police, Jonathan Berni was last seen here on March 14, and has not been heard from since. Berni, who went missing a week after his 30th birthday, stands 5-foot-5 and weighs 130 pounds. At the time of his disappearance, police said, he was wearing blue jeans and a blue shirt with yellow stripes.
Plainfield Police Sgt. Lisa Burgess, who is investigating the case, said Berni was last seen by a roommate near the Rose Street apartment building in which he lives. Authorities were able to track Berni's car to the Newark Penn Station rail hub when police there towed it, according to Burgess, but "that's about the last of anything that we have of him," she said, as no one is known to have seen Berni in Newark.
Anyone with information on the possible whereabouts of Plainfield resident Jonathan Berni is asked to call investigator Vincent Tyler at 908-753-3049 or Plainfield Police Sgt. Lisa Burgess at 908-226-8026.

Plainfield man reported missing turns up OK in Texas

By MARK SPIVEY • Staff Writer • March 26, 2009

PLAINFIELD — A city man reported missing by family members Tuesday turned up unharmed in Texas barely two days later, police said Thursday.

According to Plainfield Police Detective Vincent Tyler, Jonathan Berni, 30, was reported found by U.S. Border Patrol officials late on Wednesday after city police informed state and local Texas authorities that they were looking for him. Berni was re-entering the country legally from the Nuevo Laredo area of Mexico into Laredo, Texas.

Family members had told local authorities earlier in the week that Berni had not been heard from since March 14. Upon investigating, Plainfield detectives were able to track his car to Newark Penn Station after police there towed it, but the trail then went cold. A roommate at the Rose Street apartment at which Berni lives was the last person to see him before the disappearance, police said.
