DEER CREEK CANYON — A massive search using sheriff's teams from Butte and Tehama counties is planned Sunday for two Oakland men last seen Feb. 28 off Highway 32 in the Lassen National Forest. Tehama County Sheriff Clay Parker said the men, identified as Misael Perez, 25, and Daniel Franco, 28, were dropped off by a friend and only intended to go on a two-hour hike.
Parker said it's suspected they were in the area scouting locations for a possible marijuana grow. Two grows were found across the canyon from the location by crews fighting the Cub Complex fires last summer.
The driver told Oakland police he waited six hours at Windy Cut, about 35 miles up Highway 32 from Chico, before leaving. He went back to Oakland, but didn't report the men as missing until March 9, after relatives of the pair pressed him for information.
The men reportedly had no supplies with them.
Parker said he hopes they were able to hitchhike from the scene, and doesn't believe they'll be found alive if they got lost in the area. "If we'd known about this right away we'd have fresh tracks to follow," Parker said. "As it is, we've had terrible weather and several inches of rain in the area since they disappeared."
Parker said he's flown the area at least twice in a California Highway Patrol helicopter, and no sign of the men has been detected. Windy Cut is a former fire lookout site on the north side of Deer Creek Canyon. The ground slopes steeply away from the graded half-acre http://us.bc.yahoo.com/b?P=ea746204-19e1-11de-aed7-53a9c80a4495&T=19ehkj7n5%2fX%3d1238056895%2fE%3d2022775853%2fR% 3dncnwsloc%2fK%3d5%2fV%3d8.1%2fW%3d0%2fY%3dPARTNER _US%2fF%3d32089037%2fH%3dYWx0c3BpZD0iOTY3MjgzMTU0I iBzZXJ2ZUlkPSJlYTc0NjIwNC0xOWUxLTExZGUtYWVkNy01M2E 5YzgwYTQ0OTUiIHNpdGVJZD0iNzg0MDUxIiB0U3RtcD0iMTIzO DA1Njg5NTk1MTY3OCIgdGFyZ2V0PSJfYmxhbmsiIA--%2fQ%3d-1%2fS%3d1%2fJ%3d29558862&U=13ud6fueh%2fN%3d4jMBAGKIVIk-%2fC%3d600049174.600052945.400320782.400320782%2fD %3dLREC%2fB%3d1719364666999219326%2fV%3d2flat off Highway 32, and there are numerous cliffs in the area. Perez is described as 5-foot-6, with brown eyes and a shaved head. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black sweater and white Nike shoes.
Franco is about 6 feet tall, with brown eyes and a shaved head. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and yellow boots.
Anyone with information about the men is asked to call the Tehama County Sheriff's Office at 529-7920.

Missing Oakland men sought in Tehama County

RED BLUFF - Two Oakland men have been reported missing in a remote area of eastern Tehama County, Sheriff Clay Parker said Wednesday.
The men, 25-year-old Misael Perez and Daniel Franco, 28, have been missing since Feb. 28.
But their strange disappearance was not reported to the Oakland Police Department until March 9, Parker said.
A California Highway Patrol helicopter has flown over the area several times since then without finding a clue, Parker said.
An extensive ground search with about a dozen volunteers is planned for Sunday.
"I don't think time is of an essence" anymore, Parker said. "It would have been a different story if it was reported when it happened."
But Parker, who doubts that the men are still alive if they are indeed in the area, said the men might have hitchhiked from the region.
Still, he said, "hope is not good."
Perez and Franco were dropped off on Highway 32 near Windy Cut, about 35 miles northeast of Chico, by a friend Feb. 28.
The two were to return to the drop-off point after they completed an approximately 2-mile hike, Parker said.
The men took no hiking equipment or supplies with them.
Their friend reported that he waited for about six hours before returning to the Oakland area, Parker said. He didn't know why the men were not reported missing until nine days after their disappearance.
He speculated that the disappearance may not have been reported to law enforcement authorities for fear it would have raised suspicions about the men's activities.
"We obviously know what goes on in remote areas of Tehama County," Parker said.
He failed to elaborate.
Franco is described as being about 6 feet tall with brown eyes and a shaved head. He was wearing blue jeans and yellow boots. It's not known what type of shirt or jacket he was wearing.
Perez is described as being about 5 feet 6 inches tall with brown eyes and a shaved head. He was reported to have been wearing blue jeans, a black sweater and tennis shoes.
Those who might have seen them are asked to call the Tehama County Sheriff's Office at 529-7920.

The Tehama County Sheriff's Department received word on March 11 that two Oakland men, missing since Feb. 28, may have become lost in Tehama County, a TCSD release said. Daniel Franco, 28, and Misael Perez, 25, were dropped off on Highway 32 near Windy Cut, about 35 miles northeast of Chico, by a friend for a two-hour hike on Feb. 28. The two took no supplies or hiking equipment with them.
The driver waited for them for six hours before returning to the Oakland area.
It is unknown why a report was not immediately made, but family members waited until March 9 to report to the Oakland Police Department that the two were missing.
A California Highway Patrol helicopter has flown the area several times, but found nothing.
Perez is described as being 5-6 with brown eyes and a shaved head. He was wearing blue jeans, a black sweater and white Nike shoes.
Franco is described as 6-0 with brown eyes and a shaved head. He was wearing blue jeans and yellow type of shirt or jacket he may have been wearing.
A search is in progress, and anyone who has seen the men has been asked to call 529-7920.

Oakland men found dead near Soda Springs
Staff Reports

BUTTE MEADOWS — The search for two Oakland men, missing since Feb. 28, ended Thursday with the discovery of their bodies near Soda Springs. A Sierra Pacific Industries employee reported discovering two bodies between Soda Springs Road and Old Lomo Road near Highway 32, according to a Tehama County Sheriff's Office press release.
Detectives responded and located the bodies of Misael Perez, 25, and Daniel Franco, 28, huddled beneath fallen timber.
Officials believe the men died from exposure. There were no signs of suspicious injuries on either body.
It appeared they had tried to protect themselves from the cold by lying beneath downed logs. The men had neither matches nor a lighter between them.
The location was 6.2 miles southwest of Windy Cut, where they were dropped off by an acquaintance on Feb. 28.
Earlier, officials had said the men had apparently intended to go for a two-hour hike. Tehama County Sheriff Clay Parker had said it was possible the pair had been scouting locations for a marijuana grow.
The driver who dropped off Franco and Perez told Oakland police that he had waited six hours at Windy Cut before leaving. He didn't report the men missing until March 9, after the men's relatives sought information.
Since the men were reported missing, search and rescue personnel have been through the area including a massive search Sunday. There were also several fly-overs by a CHP helicopter.

Bodies of missing Oakland men found in Tehama County

RED BLUFF - The bodies of two Oakland men who had been missing in a remote area of eastern Tehama County since Feb. 28 have been found.
The bodies of Misael Perez, 25, and Daniel Franco, 28, were found around 10:30 a.m. Thursday by a Sierra Pacific Industries employee, Tehama County Sheriff Clay Parker said Friday.
The discovery was made on land between Soda Springs and Old Loma roads in the area of Highway 32 near Windy Cut.
The bodies of the men were found huddled beneath fallen timber about 6.2 miles southwest of where they had been dropped off by a friend, Parker said.
There were no signs of suspicious injuries to either of the men and it appeared that they had attempted to shield themselves from the cold by lying beneath the downed logs, Parker said.
Neither of the men carried matches or a lighter, and it's believed they both died of exposure, Parker said.
The men's strange disappearance was not reported to the Oakland Police Department until March 9, Parker has said.
A California Highway Patrol helicopter flew over the area several times after that without finding a clue, and an extensive ground search was conducted Sunday without any success.
Parker, who was not available for comment Friday afternoon, has said that a friend dropped off Perez and Franco on Highway 32 near Windy Cut, about 35 miles northeast of Chico, on Feb. 28.
The two were to return to the drop-off point after they completed an approximately two-mile hike, Parker has said.
The men took no hiking equipment or supplies with them.
Their friend reported that he waited for about six hours before returning to the Oakland area, Parker said.
He said he did not know why the men were not reported missing immediately after their disappearance.

NEWS NOW: Bodies of missing hikers found
Friday, Apr 3 2009, 4:32 pm
By Julie R. Johnson/Staff writer (jjohnson@tcnpress.com)
The bodies of two missing Bay Area hikers have been have been found in the Tehama County mountains.
Misael Perez, 25, and Daniel Franco, 28, both of Oakland, had been dropped off Feb. 28 in the Windy Cut area near Highway 32, according to Tehama County Sheriff Clay Parker. When the driver — later identified as Aidan Perez of Santa Ana — returned later that same day, neither Misael Perez nor Franco showed up, said Parker.
"I suspect they were up there scouting for an illegal marijuana garden site," Parker said.
Aidan Perez did not report them missing.
On March 11, family members of the two men reported them missing. Oakland police then contacted the Tehama County Sheriff's Department.
"We started searching the area they were reported missing from using a CHP helicopter but were unsuccessful," Parker said.
On Sunday, search-and-rescue teams from Tehama and Butte counties began a foot search of the treacherous terrain but came up empty.
Thursday morning, a Sierra Pacific Industries employee reported finding two bodies between Soda Springs and Old Loma roads, approximately six miles from where the missing men had been dropped off. Law enforcement identified the two bodies as Misael Perez and Franco.
"We believe they died from exposure," Parker said. "Probably within 24 to 48 hours from the time they were dropped off in the area."
The bodies were found huddled beneath fallen timber where it appeared the men had tried to shield themselves from the cold, according to Parker. Autopsies are scheduled today.
