A 34-year-old woman, Nicole Bowman, said Sadler stopped her in a parking lot after she had left a bar, then searched her, pulling up her bra and looking down her pants. The county settled the lawsuit with Bowman for $10,000, according to court documents. From around 5 to 11 p.m. Wednesday, sheriff's officials searched the Santee area for Sadler using a helicopter, tracking dogs and search and rescue ground teams but no leads were found, Strahm said, adding that authorities will determine their next step this morning.

It sounds to me like he could have harmed himself, or maybe just run away.

Cop Facing Sexual Assault Charges Missing in Santee

Last Update: 6:30 am

SANTEE - A veteran sheriff's detective accused of sexually assaulting a prostitute in Mission Valley while on duty was missing Thursday, the day he was to appear in court for a preliminary hearing, authorities said.

Thomas John Sadler, 48, was last seen leaving his Santee home for a walk near Carlton Hills and Mast boulevards around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Brent Strahm said.

Sadler's wife, Adrianna Sadler, told deputies her husband frequently takes walks and this time, took his wallet and prescription medication but left his cell phone and keys, which was "highly unusual," according to Strahm.

"(She) believes Thomas Sadler is depressed and was also very concerned about statements he made to her around 2 a.m. the previous morning, which led her to believe that he might try to harm himself," Strahm said.

Sadler was scheduled to appear at the San Diego County Courthouse at 8:15 a.m. today for a preliminary hearing to determine whether there was enough evidence to go to trial.

Sadler, a 23-year veteran of the sheriff's department, is charged with five felony charges, including sexual battery by restraint. He faces about eight years behind bars if convicted, according to the District Attorney's Office.

After his arrest last July, Sadler was hospitalized for trying to commit suicide while in custody.

Sadler has been on administrative leave pending the outcome of the charges against him. According to a declaration filed in support of an arrest warrant, the charges stem from a Feb. 6, 2008 incident.

The declaration states that a prostitute in her 20s was sitting on a curb in the 3100 block of El Cajon Boulevard in the North Park area when Sadler, driving his unmarked work vehicle, pulled up alongside her and identified himself as a "sheriff's officer."

He then allegedly forced the woman into his vehicle and drove her to the 2800 block of Camino del Rio South, where he pulled over on the edge of a restaurant parking lot and forcefully fondled her, according to the declaration.

Three witnesses called 911 to report what they took to be a kidnapping in progress, but Sadler fled before police arrive, according to the court filing.

Sadler was accused of similar behavior in 2002 in a lawsuit filed in federal court.

SANTEE — A sheriff's detective accused of sexually assaulting a prostitute while on duty was reported missing Wednesday but turned up Thursday morning shortly before he was scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing.

Sheriff's deputies were en route to talk with Thomas Sadler about 7:45 a.m., said sheriff's Lt. Gary Steadman. Details of when and where he was found have not yet been released.

A search was launched for the 48-year-old deputy after his wife reported that he left his home near Carlton Hills and Mast boulevards on foot sometime before 12:30 p.m., sheriff's officials said.

She told deputies that her husband would regularly take walks but this time he took his prescription medicine and wallet but left behind his cell phone and keys, which she thought was unusual.

Sadler said she was also worried because her husband was depressed and that he had said some things to her the previous morning that led her to believe he may try and harm himself, officials said.

Deputies with the department's search and rescue team used tracking dogs and a helicopter to comb the area but came up empty-handed.

The search was called off about 11 p.m.

Sadler, who is a 20-year-veteran with the Sheriff's Department and was assigned to the Lemon Grove station, is facing five felony charges of sexual battery by restraint, assault and battery by an officer, false imprisonment and two counts of fraudulently accessing a computer.

The allegations stem from a February 2008 incident. According to police, the deputy pulled up alongside a prostitute sitting on a bus bench on El Cajon Boulevard in North Park, identified himself as a “sheriff's officer” and ordered her to get in his car.

He drove the woman to Camino Del Rio south in Mission Valley, next to Dave & Busters, where he parked and forcible fondled her, police said.

He released her but took her cell phone and broke it when she tried to take a picture of his license plate, according to his arrest warrant. The warrant further alleged that he later used a department computer to look up information about the incident and to see if his license plate was listed as wanted.

Sadler was taken into custody in July and was released the next morning on $250,000 bail. He tried to commit suicide that afternoon, sheriff's officials said.

He was arraigned in San Diego Superior Court in August and pleaded not guilty to all charges. His bail was reduced to $100,000.

His defense attorney Michael Berg said at the time that Sadler was convinced he did nothing wrong and was shocked that he was being charged. Berg said the detective planned to fight the charges.

Sadler has been on unpaid leave from the department pending the outcome of the case.
