Friends last saw Darren Harris, 24, on March 12 in the Kissimmee area. Anyone who has information should call Orange County Sheriff's Office at 407-836-4357. (March 26, 2009)

Orange County deputy sheriff's are seeking the public's help this morning in looking for a missing 24-year-old man.

Friends last saw Darren Harris on March 12 in the Kissimmee (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/us/florida/osceola-county/kissimmee-PLGEO100100411040000.topic) area. He hasn't been seen since.

Deputies believe Harris may be in danger.

According to deputies, on Wednesday, March 11 Harris and a group of friends spent the day at Cocoa Beach, leaving there at 7 p.m.

The group then went to Buffalo Wild Wings on State Road 535 near Interstate 4 (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/travel/commuting/interstate-4-PLTRA0000125.topic) until about midnight.

Harris went back to his friend's house in Kissimmee and spent the night there. The friend offered to give Harris a ride home at 10 a.m, but Harris told his friend he wanted to continue sleeping, according to deputies.

At 4 p.m. the friend returned and again offered Harris a ride home. Harris declined the ride a second time and told the friend he wanted to continue sleeping. The friend leaves the home again and returns at 6 p.m. to find Harris has left. No one has seen Harris since that day.

Deputies are concerned because the disappearance is out of character.

Anyone who has information about Harris is urged by deputies to call Orange County Sheriff's Office (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/crime-law-justice/police/orange-county-sheriffs-office-ORGOV000024.topic) at 407-836-4357.

The sheriff's office is scheduled to release more information at 11 a.m.

Excerpt~

Harris moved to Orlando from Nashville, Tenn., nearly a year ago and works as a barback at T.G.I. Friday's near S.R. 535 and I-4 in The Crossroads at Lake Buena Vista complex. He has a paycheck and tips waiting for him at the restaurant but he has not gone to collect it, which deputies said they find to be odd.

His mother, Carrie Helfrich, drove to Orlando from Nashville last week after discovering via Myspace.com that her son was missing. She spent several days scouring the area, meeting with detectives and posting missing persons fliers with her son's photo.

Helfrich is concerned because her son has not contacted anyone in two weeks, which is unusual. Her mother's intuition is telling her that he's alive.

"I go from one extreme to the next. I'm not giving up hope whatsoever," Helfrich said. "I don't feel like he can just disappear."

Detectives have canvassed the area where Harris went missing and reviewed video surveillance of gas stations in the area. They are running out of leads.

"He's 24-years-old and there is money waiting for him at his job," said missing person detective Rich Mendez. "That's unusual."

Anyone who has information about Harris is urged by deputies to call Orange County Sheriff's Office at 407-836-4357.

Check back for more updates.

Missing Orlando man might be in danger, police say

Bianca Prieto | Sentinel Staff Writer
March 27, 2009

The disappearance of a 24-year-old Orlando man has baffled Orange County deputies as well as the man's friends and family.

Darren Harris, an employee at T.G.I. Friday's on State Road 535, was last seen March 12, sleeping on a couch at a friend's apartment near Kissimmee.

Orange sheriff's detectives now fear he might be in danger.

Harris, who does not have a drivers license or bank account, didn't show up for work and has not collected a paycheck waiting for him at the restaurant.

According to deputies, Harris and a group of friends spent the day at Cocoa Beach on March 11. Harris cashed two paychecks, bought swimming trunks at a store and spent the day on the beach.

The group left Cocoa Beach about 7 p.m. and headed to Buffalo Wild Wings on S.R. 535 near Interstate 4. Harris stayed at the restaurant until about midnight.

Harris went back to his friend's house in Kissimmee and spent the night there. The friend, who was leaving to run errands, offered Harris a ride home at 10 a.m., but Harris told his friend he wanted to continue sleeping, according to deputies.

At 4 p.m. the friend returned and again offered Harris a ride home. Harris declined the ride a second time and told the friend he wanted to continue sleeping. The friend left again and returned at 6 p.m. Harris was gone, and no one has seen him since.

Detective Rich Mendez said Harris' disappearance is alarming because he has not returned to work to pick up his paycheck and tips.

"He's 24 years old, and there is money waiting for him at his job," Mendez said. "That's unusual."

Harris moved from Nashville, Tenn., to Orlando with a friend in May to be closer to the beach, said his mother, Carrie Helfrich. The last time she spoke to her son, he was excited about his job, which included busing tables and helping bartenders.

Helfrich drove to Orlando from Nashville last week after discovering via MySpace.com that her son was missing. She spent several days scouring the area, meeting with detectives and posting missing-persons fliers with her son's photo.

Helfrich said she is concerned because her son has not contacted anyone in two weeks, which is unusual. She said her intuition tells her that he's alive.

"I go from one extreme to the next. I'm not giving up hope whatsoever," Helfrich said.

"I don't feel like he can just disappear."

Detectives have canvassed the area where Harris went missing and reviewed video surveillance of gas stations in the area, but they are running out of leads.

Anyone who has information about Harris can call the Orange County Sheriff's Office at 407-836-4357.

Missing Orange County man found in Ybor City

12:48 PM EDT, April 6, 2009
A missing Orange County man was found safe in Hillsborough County recently after walking away from his life in Orlando.

Darren Harris, 24, was found safe in Ybor City on April 3 at a bar there. Harris' mother, Carrie Helfrich, drove from Tennessee to Tampa after Orange County deputies discovered he had been staying in the area.

Investigators found out that Harris had been in a minor car accident on March 13 and learned that at some point Harris had decided to leave the Orlando area and go to Ybor City.

Harris was last seen on March 12 when he was sleeping on a friends couch near Kissimmee. Orange County deputies launched an investigation to his disappearance.

Harris' mother took him back to Tennessee after he was found.

"The investigation into Darren's disappearance has determined that the young man was depressed and tired of his living arrangements in Orange County and left on his own accord," according to a news release from Orange County Sheriff's Office. "He is reported to be in good shape."
