OAKLAND, Calif. -- The remains of an elderly woman who went missing nearly seven years ago may have been found among the piles of debris littering in her Oakland home, authorities saidInvestigators were called by a cleaning crew to a home in the 700 block of 47th Street at about 8 p.m. Wednesday. The workmen had been hired to clean out the piles of debris that littered the house so that it could be sold. But in an upstairs bedroom, the cleaning crew made a grisly discovery – human bones under a pile of junk, authorities said.Eunice Workman was 76 at the time of her disappearance and had been living in the house for about a decade. A search was undertaken at the time, but she was never located. Her neighbor, Virginia Taylor, took part in that search.“Mrs. Workman was a very decent woman,” said Taylor, an Oakland teacher who used to take walks with the woman. “She was a mentor… She helped a lot of people in the community.”Police said the home was filled from floor to ceiling with hoarded belongings and preliminary reports indicate the victim may have died by being crushed or trapped by collected piles of junk, and was simply never found. The remains have not yet been officially identified, an Alameda County coroner said. But police say first evidence points toward the remains being the missing woman.

There was a similiar case here recently but in this case the old lady (Doris Jackson) was murdered and purposely hidden under all of the accumulated junk in her house.

These cases are sad. They get old, become hoarders, and no one helps.

Though she is not old, this was what I thought of:

How very sad. Does Eunice have any family? Why would it take almost 7 years to go through the home? I understand the article stated that workmen had been hired to clean out all the debris but why take all this time to find her.
My prayers got out to her family and friends.

Police investigate remains found at North Oakland house
By Harry Harris Oakland Tribune

Oakland — A woman whose remains were found inside a North Oakland house Wednesday evening was the 85-year-old owner of the house and was reported missing in 2002, relatives told police.
Although her identity has not been confirmed by authorities, relatives said she was Eunice Workman, who had been living in the two-story house for decades.
Sgt. Caesar Basa said Thursday that an autopsy will be performed to determine how the woman died. Until then, the case is being handled as a suspicious circumstance death, authorities said.
Relatives of the woman found her remains about 5 p.m. Wednesday in an upstairs bedroom room filled with papers and other items. They were at the house cleaning after an ownership issue over the property was recently settled, authorities said.
The woman's stepson Larry Workman said his family owns the house.
Details from the missing person report were not immediately available Thursday, but it is believed a search of the house was made at the time she was reported missing and nothing was found.
Anyone with information is asked to call Oakland police at 510-238-3821.

OMG, how can this happen????
The home was reportedly filled from floor to ceiling with hoarded belongings. Preliminary reports indicate the victim may have died by being crushed or trapped by piles of junk, and was simply never found, according to police.
Workman was listed as missing by police for several years.
Gonzalez said the family notified the coroner's bureau that the only person living at the home was their mother, Workman, and the autopsy today will try to verify that she was the woman found.

OMG how very sad! I can't imagine it taking 7 years for them to clean out the house. My heart just breaks for these elderly people that nobody seems to care about enough to keep a check on them.

That's the worst part, Panda. No one cared enough to do a good, thorough search until they wanted to sell the house.
