Family of missing man searching for answers
Posted By HENRY BURY, THE INTELLIGENCER
Calvin Vanness taught his four children to be strong.
They have been relying on that strength, they said, to get them through each day in a year-long ordeal of not knowing where their father is or whether he's even alive.
"It's hard to describe the emptiness in our hearts. Dad taught us to be strong and we will stay that way until we get some answers," Cheryl Styan said Thursday.
Diane Jarvis said even though their father has been missing for a year, "we're not going to let it go. Closure will come with answers."
Jarvis, Styan and siblings Yvonne English and Travis Vanness made another public plea Thursday for information on their missing father.
Their plea at the Belleville Police Service headquarters came exactly one year after the 66-year-old Vanness last spoke to any member of his family.
The Palmer Road man called his brother in Arden March 26, 2008, to tell him he would be pulling into his driveway within a matter of hours. Vanness hasn't been seen or heard from since.
Less than a week after the disappearance, Kingston police found Vanness' car -- a 2004 four-door grey Pontiac Grand Prix with black and red flame decals -- at the Highway 38 car pool lot off of Highway 401.
Belleville police have interviewed more than 60 people and conducted several large-scale searches over the past year, but to no avail.
They have also offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his disappearance.
Insp. Mike Graham said no one has come forward through Crime Stoppers with any type of information into Vanness' disappearance.
"Most of the leads have come through the hard work of detectives beating the bush" he said.
Graham said police have deemed his disappearance as suspicious.
"We're quite confident Mr. Vanness didn't disappear of his own accord," he said.
The family of the missing man still hold out hope for finding him.
"Standing here today feels just as painful for our family as it was last year at this time," Diane Jarvis told a throng of reporters gathered at police headquarters. "Time is supposed to heal. Well, I can tell you from our experience that time hasn't lessened our pain.
"It is a God-size hole of hurt, with an endless amount of questions that run through our minds daily. My father was not only my best friend but an essential part of my life and the lives of my entire family," said the Peterborough resident.
Jarvis said her father had a heart condition and the family always thought they would lose him to bad health.
"But having him disappear like this is stunning. Dad would never leave us. It's painful to conceive," she said. "You always have hope that he's alive. That would be our happy ending. That's closure, to have him back."
Jarvis said the year-long ordeal has been a "daily living hell" for her and other family members.
"You never dream of this happening to someone you love and, especially, a parent," she said.
Jarvis said Thursday's press conference is another cry for help.
"(We are) Hoping by seeing us and hearing us, people will search their minds and some, their conscience, and do the right thing by giving any information that could assist the police in finding our father."
Then she turned her attention to the people who may be involved with the disappearance of her father.
"I wish whoever would have done this, to feel for us ... for his family who has to live this nightmare every day. We all just want to find our dad. We are all still waiting," said Jarvis.
Styan, of Madoc, said her days are filled with sleepless nights, "depressed because I'm helpless to find someone out there with information ... we need closure and we will never give up."
Yvonne English, of Belleville, said she had two wishes.
"My first wish would be to have my dad back with us, but the second wish would be for answers," she said.
Travis Vanness, also of Belleville, said he misses his father and wants him back.
Mike Graham assured the siblings that their investigation will continue to help the family find peace.
"This (investigation) is not going to go away until it's completely empty. I'm confident we'll have an answer some day," he said.

Belleville Police ask hunters to help them again in a suspected murder investigation (http://www.mix97.com/news/2009/10/belleville-police-ask-hunters-to-help-them-again-in-a-suspected-murder-investigation/)
Posted on Wednesday, October 14th, 2009
Belleville Police are once again asking hunters to help them in their investigation of the disappearance and suspected murder of a 66-year-old city man more than one and a half years ago.
Calvin Vanness left his home on March 26th, 2008 to drive to his brother’s house in Arden, but never arrived.
Police issued an appeal in the fall of last year to hunters north of Belleville and Kingston to report anything suspicious, and Detective Peter Goulah says they’re making the same request this year.
He says anyone who finds something unusual, like clothing, sleeping bags, comforters, jewellery or ground displacements should call police.. Vanness’s vehicle was discovered in the car pool lot at Highways 4-0-1 and 38 in Kingston on April first, six days after he left home.

Sad story. If he was driving, shouldn't they search ditches, waterways, etc.
I hope the family gets answers.

Remains found near kingston gives Vanness family hope
Calvin Vanness vanished March 26, 2008
Posted By W. Brice McVicar The Intelligencer
Posted 4 hours ago
A local family is anxiously awaiting further news on human remains found by hunters in the Kingston area with hopes they may end a search that has lasted more than a year.
The discovery of what appears to be human bones in Central Frontenac Township late last week could bring some peace to Calvin Vanness' children. Results, too, could partially answer questions they have had since the 65-year-old Belleville man vanished March 26, 2008. Vanness' grey four-door Pontiac Grand Prix was discovered in a northwest Kingston carpool lot at highways 38 and 401.
"There's so many unknowns and so many unanswered questions," said Cheryl-Anne Styan, one of Vanness' daughters. "We're hoping that this may be the end."
Styan said media reports Monday morning concerning the discovery prompted numerous phone calls between family members. Though it was too early to know Monday morning even whether the bones are human, the discovery has Styan "on edge."
"I hope it's dad, but it still leaves many unanswered questions if it is him," she said.
Vanness' son, Travis, said he too is hoping to learn the bones are his father's remains only so the family can move on from the unknown.
"I'm very hopeful it's dad because it'd be nice to put half an end to all of this," he said. "We still need to know what happened to him and who's responsible."
The last contact family members had with Vanness was when he called his brother from his cellphone March 26. Police believe Vanness was driving in an area near the Quinte Mall at time and said he would be pulling into the driveway of his sibling's Arden-area home within a matter of hours. He hasn't been seen or heard from since. Nothing suspicious was discovered at his Palmer Road apartment — in fact, his television and lights had been left on.
Belleville police Det. Peter Goulah said he has very little information on the discovery but has been in contact with the Ontario Provincial Police.
"I don't know what they have and I've been in contact with the OPP and they're going to let me know as soon as they know," Goulah said.
The discovery, Travis said, comes soon after his acceptance that his father's remains may never be found.
I was shocked when I heard about it because I was just starting to think that we'd never find him," he said. "I guess we'll know more later this week."
