Pastor Clifford Lane Lawless talks with reporters outside of his church in Tracy today.
The pastor of a church police cordoned off as a crime scene lives in the mobile home park where a Tracy girl lived before she was found dead in a suitcase north of town.
Clifford Lane Lawless of the Clover Road Baptist Church lives in Space 57 at Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park, property records show, where 8-year-old Sandra Cantu lived with her mom, grandparents and siblings before her March 27 disappearance.
Police and FBI searched his church — which sits about 100 yards away from the mobile home park — and an Orchard Estates home soon after they announced they had found the missing girl’s body Monday night. Cops refused to say whether the mobile home they searched belongs to Lawless.
As of this afternoon, no arrests have been made and no suspects named. An autopsy is underway to determine how Sandra died.
Lawless lives in the mobile home park with his wife, Connie Lawless, according to city property records. He has owned the home since the mid-1990s.
Lawless told reporters from a Sacramento news team that he had nothing to do with Sandra's disappearance and that he just knew her from living in the mobile home park.
Investigators put up crime scene tape around Clover Road Baptist last night and plan to search the place again sometime this afternoon, said Tracy police spokesman Sgt. Tony Sheneman.
No one in the neighborhood surrounding Orchard Estates said they attend the Baptist church. About a dozen neighbors said they don’t know anyone who does, and that it has a tiny congregation.
Folks from a Jehovah’s Witness church across the street from Lawless’ church said they've never talked to anyone from the congregation. Pastors, members and elders of a handful of other churches in northern Tracy said the same thing.
Lawless has no criminal history and no civil lawsuits against him in San Joaquin County, court records show. The only property he owns in San Joaquin County is his mobile home.
A bio on his church’s Web site says Lawless converted to Christianity 49 years ago in Washington state and was ordained as a pastor 11 years later.
He received a degree in theology from the Baptist Theological Seminary of Hayward and the Alisal Baptist Institute of Salinas, according to the Web site. He has led churches in Southern California and in Mountain View and Eureka.
He was appointed pastor of the Baptist church in Tracy in 1981. He married his wife in 1960 in Modesto, the Web site continues. They have three grown children together — Brian, Brett and Joni, “who are all involved in God’s work” — and nine grandchildren.
Lawless’ name is the fourth to have come up in the missing person-turned murder investigation. Police served search warrants on 60-year old martial arts teacher Frank Wohler, who lived behind Sandra’s home and said he kissed her on the lips two years ago just to be nice.
Christian Sinclair, 49 — who’s depicted in court records as abusive and alcoholic — was arrested last week for obstructing the investigation. Police searched his home, too.
Sinclair’s friend, David Slayter, 44, was then taken to the police station for questioning last week as the FBI and Stockton and Tracy police searched his home and took out several items.

Playground cottage honors memory of slain Tracy girl

TRACY - Sandra Cantu was sometimes observed by her neighbors picking flowers. The 8-year-old loved pink and purple.
Kriste and Bob Hennick, Central Coast birdhouse builders, kept in mind the little girl's characteristics when they built a playhouse that they donated to Jacobsen Elementary School in memory of the slain second-grader.
The Hennicks' gift is made of cedar, and it features colorful spring flower boxes, purple trim and a pink door. A sign that reads "Sandra's Cottage" welcomes children inside.
The couple had heard the news reports of Sandra's disappearance and slaying, but they became more connected to her story when they met Tracy City Councilman Steve Abercrombie in April at a benefit auction in Southern California.
Kriste Hennick, 48, owner of Kriste's Bird Houses in Orcutt, had a shed donated for the auction. "I remember selling him raffle tickets," she said. "I just felt sick, because I knew what just happened in Tracy. I just feel for that town. I don't want her forgotten."
Abercrombie called her days later to ask if she could make a house to honor Sandra.
"I think it's just another part of the healing process," Abercrombie said. "It's just another thing the kids can look at to remember Sandra in a positive light. (Kriste Hennick) said it was built with love, and she wanted to get it done for this school year so the kids affected would get to see it this school year."
The Hennicks delivered the playhouse Friday, about one hour after classes were dismissed. Tracy firefighters and police helped unload the child-size cottage from a delivery truck onto school grounds.
The 7-foot-tall playhouse will sit in the kindergarten playground. Children will get the chance to let their imagination roam inside beginning Tuesday.
A few children had a sneak peek Friday, including 2-year-old Carly Abercrombie, the councilman's daughter.
Eleven-year-old Michelle Burgos and her 6-year-old sister, Ariana, checked out the small cottage as they lingered in the playground at the end of their after-school program.
"It is really pretty," said Michelle, a fifth-grader. "It's nice that they're thinking about Sandra."
