It was a big tree wasn't it? It damaged the whole left side of the house.....roof (which is metal), fireplace, and all the eaves on that side. Tore up my flower beds and a bunch of new plants. To make matters worse, the insurance adjuster isn't coming until the 14th! I am soooooo ready to get everything back like it was. There was damage inside the house too from the rain coming in from the chimney where the flashing was knocked off and my hardwood floors are not looking like they are buckling. The saving grace is that it was not closer to the house or there would have been really severe damage and thankfully both my son and I were not hurt. His favorite place to sit is next to the fireplace and he was sitting there when the tree fell. I was in the bedroom ironing because I just knew we were going to lose power and I had to get some things pressed for work FGS! Lights went out just before the tree was uprooted and that was that for the ironing!:girl_haha: Needless to say it was all in vane because I did not make it into work for the rest of the week.....power was off for about 20 hours.

Industrious aren't ya? Can't mow anything around our house until we get all the trash from that darn tree picked up. Have lots more limbs that have fallen down close to the road we need to take care of too. Oh well, it's supposed to be pretty here for the rest of the week so we might be able to get some major work done in the yard.

Why is it that in insurance salesman will be over collecting your check like rocket man when you sign up, but forget your address when you need them to pay up? My cousin in Galveston has just completed her repairs from Hurrican Ike...which was many months ago. She did temporary repairs, then waited for adjusters....then waited for them to pay off. She had purchased one of the old victorian style houses there and spent a lot of money fixing it up (took several years). Galveston is just now coming back from the hurricane.
Bayou Lass, Roamy and I'd like to have a word with you, Missy. :zm1: I was in WalMart when the tornado sirens went off.... they herded everyone into the center of the store and would let them leave for a while. Turned out it touched down about 11 miles NE of town from what I hear. Like you though, it has now stopped storming and the sun is out.
Grins, we used to get those giant CC cookies too. We could get Happy Birthday greetings (or whatever the occasion was) put on them.... I'd forgotten about that.
"candy store for $327.50" == :faintTHUD:
Bayou Lass, did you mean what you typed, " my hardwood floors are not looking like they are buckling" or is that a typo? If you meant it, that's good news indeed.
Your adjuster slipped his date to the 14th? I thought he said 11th. Was there a lot of other damage in the area?

That was gonna be my next question. Who was all there when it happened. Thank god no one was hurt. And how scary that your son was sitting right were it hit. Just glad you are okay. That stuff can be replaced, you can't be. :love0085:

Typo.....now look like they are buckling.
I had to laugh about the WalMart experience. I can just picture you being herded to the center of the store with a bunch of shoppers. Bet that was fun huh? Just be glad that it didn't touch down closer......I'd hate to be in one of those big stores if it hit. Glad you are safe.
Nope, I guess my hissy-fit worked. He's coming sometime tomorrow so I will not be here to chat and visit. Will let you know what happened on Monday. My new computer came in and hopefully I can get it set up and will be able to talk to ya'll during the weekend.

Sorry about the hardwood floors though.
What kind of 'puter did you get? My "new" one (a year old now) is an HP Pavilion Slimline and I like it pretty well. My only complaint is it came with Vista but I didn't really have a choice on that back then.

Thanks you my friend....love the happy dance. I got a Dell Inspiron 1545 (got a good company discount). I don't have the room in my little house for a big computer and this suits me just fine as I can go into my bedroom, shut the door and surf the net to my little heart's desire and ........ talk to my friends from home. My ex bought me a computer a few years ago and decided that he needed it back for some reason - so I have been without a home computer for quite a while. I really didn't miss it until I started posting with ya'll. Now I can still work and chat and go home and work and chat.

texanne, I'm glad to know someone else's mind works like mine. I too frequently make up stories to go with pictures. Did you notice the Raven in the background?
I did Nicky. She looks forlorn to me. At first I thought perhaps she was waiting for someone (a lover) who had failed to show up. Then when I noticed the flower over her ear matches those at her feet I decided the lover had been there, picked her the flower and possibly placed it over her ear and left.

Artful Afternoon
On a sunny afternoon
too long since I had done something
just for me you see I was reading a book
asked me to list ten things
I have always wanted to do
too busy
So I stopped and got a pen
....blank
Back to the book:
"Ok then, three."
laughing I determined to do one
for fun
To the art museum next afternoon
wonder if they have a Monet
daylight streams in from skylight
I enter turn right
there it is
lit from within and without
such colors cascade
No one else there
walking around I see a story in every painting
love and mystery is that a glove I see
perhaps she will come back to retrieve it
we may stroll together looking stories traded
romance in every frame
perhaps a coffee after to review our new
feelings
Ending my journey of art joy art ploy
to meet her of my dream
enjoy the day I reflect
suspect she may come next week
we will discuss fate
This week she is
merely
late~
Loving it all
as I did then,
Grins

Oh, I use mine all the time and carry it in my purse. I was looking in WalMart yesterday and they have a Sony... I think it was S780 for "only" $129 and I'd probably have bought one but they didn't have it in stock and it may be a good thing. I looked on line and found that it's discontinued and I had failed to notice until my very smart DH asked me about it, there was no view finder. You HAVE to sight with the LED screen. *sigh* I did some checking and found that to get another Sony WITH a view finder I have to move up to the $300 range. That's not a range I'm prepared to graze in right now. :girl_haha:

Dpreview magazine=good site for all cameras
"SAN DIEGO, Jan. 23, 2008 – Sony today unveiled its high-zoom Cyber-shot® DSC-H10 digital camera, a compact model that is ideal for parents looking to capture their families’ memories.
With its small dimensions (only 4-1/4-inches wide by 2-3/4-inches tall by 2-inches deep), the new model combines the performance of much larger cameras in a more convenient size. Small enough for a pocket or purse, the 8-megapixel camera is perfect for sporting events, school recitals and vacations, helping you easily capture close-ups, even from a distance.
Designed to replace the current DSC-H3 model, the DSC-H10 camera features a wider 3-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus™ screen for easy playback viewing and menu navigation.
Great Photos Made Easy
The new model has a powerful Carl Zeiss® 10x optical zoom lens and a long-range flash to help you capture details from afar. Its face detection technology can identify and focus on up to eight faces in a frame, and automatically adjusts the focus for correctly exposed photos.
The high-zoom camera includes Sony’s advanced sports shooting mode, which combines high shutter speed and continuous auto-focusing to help you capture fast-action shots. This intelligent technology allows the camera to quickly focus on fast-moving subjects by predicting where they will be in the frame – and ultimately reducing shutter lag.
To help you capture well-exposed, natural-looking photos – even in challenging low-light conditions – the new model features high sensitivity shooting (up to ISO 3200). It also incorporates Super Steady Shot® optical image stabilization to reduce blur caused by shaky hands.
The DSC-H10 camera incorporates Sony’s D-Range Optimizer (DRO) to help you capture balanced images when shooting in high-contrast or backlit scenes. DRO modifies the range from highlights to shadows through its in-camera hardware processing – ultimately producing more natural, evenly exposed images.
The camera also has helpful functions to manually correct images immediately after capturing them, including in-camera red-eye correction and photo retouching.
Fast and Fun Playback
For fun playback of family photos, the unit’s built-in slideshow function helps create slideshows set to your favorite music choices. Up to eight songs can be uploaded via the camera’s USB port. To view your favorite images and slideshows just like you view your favorite TV shows – in full 1080 high definition resolution – you can connect the camera to a compatible HDTV set.
Pricing and Availability
The Cyber-Shot DSC-H10 digital camera will ship in May for about $300. Additional accessories will include wide and telephoto conversion lenses, filters, batteries, travel chargers, sports packs and cases. The new model and accessories can be purchased online at www.sonystyle.com, at Sony Style® retail stores, at military base exchanges, and at authorized dealers nationwide. Pre-orders begin on Jan. 31 at www.sonystyle.com.

Now I buy cameras and they stay in the closet till my daughter borrows them.Get one & try it=ya have 30 day return most places=you will love it=esp kids faces=the best of the best b/c you can stand way back and get em up close.
I never leave my house without my camera. I guess I use mine different than a lot of people. For example. If I see something in a store that I MIGHT like to have but want to think about.... I take a picture of it --including the price tag-- then I can call it up and discuss it with DH without having to drag him to a store... I hate that 'cause he leaves those nasty black heel marks on their floors.
I've taken pictures of people, animals, accidents, plants, stores/restaurants, ...
It was good at Christmas to take pictures of toys at one place and another and compare prices.
Camera.... m-u-s-t have camera..... :happy0158:

Now you see there....you made me "need" one. It is a nice idea for my daughter's birthday gift. She is turning out to be the new camera bug in the family. Funny story....she took a photo of the 12 yr. old grandsons at a luau last year. The little goofs were barefoot, in cutoff jeans, wearing leis...and holding giant plastic fish as if they were guitars. So, they took a pic of Brooks & Dunn off the web and placed themselves in it with the luau get ups. They hand it to people and tell them they met Brooks & Dunn...and even got to play their guitars with them. You would be surprised how long it takes some people to realize they are holding fish and not guitars.

:mornincoffee:Good Morning Klatchers!
All this camera talk makes me feel guilty. Dh is always buying a new camera, and I have trouble keeping up what to do with what. :0009: We had a garden tour here a few years ago, I wanted to use the camera with the film, asked DH to set it up for me so I could take pics of all the gardens, and the many guests who were here touring. The best group was a club of the Red Hat Ladies all dressed in their best of the best Red attire.
Later I went to take the film out to have it developed. Guess what NO FILM in the camera! :madranting94dp: So did ya read about the DH who was 'almost' murdered! :67302:
BLass, your tree looks similar to ours, especially the roots! They were the worst to remove. Took lots and lots of backaching work to dig them out.
I wasn't here yesterday so I missed a lot. PatC, I would be scared in one of those buildings with the flat roofs. Around here it always seems those shell buildings always have their roofs collapse from the heavy rains. I am happy to hear you were safe.
My Mom's birthday is next week, so I was busy out shopping. It is hard to know what sizes she wears, so I bought her a new spring purse, one of those SAC purses because they are light-weight and easy to carry around. It has pretty flowers on it, so she should love it. She really doesn't go anywhere, but she still always carrys her purse around all day. Years ago the older people were told, to never go anywhere with out their social security card, so
if one goes to the kitchen or the bedroom, or the living room, the purse goes too ensuring the social security card is with her! :shrug1:
I also packed in some chocolates, a cute hanging doorknob bunny, a Easter Pillow, a small vase of artificial violets (she loves violets), and the most darling Easter Bunny, who looks to have been made from Chenille bedspread material! He is so so so darling.
Mom is in a Residence in Henderson NV, so so far away from me. We are going to visit her tho, real soon.:kissyface4: It is a real shame tho, cause she doesn't know where she is. Mom is happy tho, and that is what counts! :kissyface4: When I call her, she always says to me, how did you know where I was to call, because we have been camping and stopped here for the night. I don't know what that is about, because she never went camping in her life! :tender:

Aw, Orchid, your mom sounds so sweet. I am sure she will be thrilled at the gifts. We had an elderly gentleman that we sort of adopted into our family. I would take the window clings for each holiday and put them on his windows at the nursing home. He fussed when I took them down once, so I had to start placing flowers, little animals, etc there all the time. He was happier when his room was colorful and bright.

Awe that is so sweet! I had an Auntie who was in a residence here, and I use to decorate her room for her, she loved it too! I also use to buy things at the science store for her, games, puzzles and all kind of stuff. So she would carry all that around, and she was very popular as all the others there loved to play with her toys! It takes very little to make them happy and feel loved and cared for. :friends3:

We took "toys" too. He was a lifelong fisherman, and had to have his length of rope to practice his knots. He would sit for hours showing the aides, etc how to tie different knots. He finally got to the point that we had to get realistic looking toy tools so he could "build" things. He just could not let his hands be idle even when he had no idea where he was and who we were half the time.
Those are great ideas for the elderly. OC, I wish you could find a pretty, lacy hanky to put in Mom's new purse. I bet anything she used to carry a pretty hanky everywhere she went.

It is hard to find the nice hankies, especially those made from cotton or linen. My mom started carrying little kleenex packs everywhere. She takes extra paper napkins when we eat out and puts them in my car. I am a neat freak when it comes to a car, so we battle over them. At 91 yrs. old, I guess she does pretty good, so I try not to let things get to me. I draw the line at the little packs with plastic forks, etc in them. Has anyone ever been driving down the road and actually needed one of those?

I got this email today and thought I'd share....
Carrots, Eggs, & Coffee
A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.
A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up, She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl.. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, ' Tell me what you see.'
'Carrots, eggs, and coffee,' she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.
Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, 'What does it mean, mother?'
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
'Which are you?' she asked her daughter. 'When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?
Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?
Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.
The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.
Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
You might want to send this message to those people who mean something to you (I JUST DID); to those who have touched your life in one way or another; to those who make you smile when you really need it; to those who make you see the brighter side of things when you are really down; to those whose friendship you appreciate; to those who are so meaningful in your life.
If you don't send it, you will just miss out on the opportunity to brighten someone's day with this message!
May we all be COFFEE!!!!!!!
For you, Trailblazer, and all my other cyber friends.

:happy0158:Not when there is a successful appeal by a defendant. DP is still available but they see in this case that is may be a block to a guilty verdict and that is easier to get w/ DP off the table. Same with Casey A case.
Thanks for the clarification, Grins.
Oh, Anna, poor Caleb.... and to add insult to injury you post his picture. :67302:
That reminds me of years ago when we had a dog, Sandy, and when she was "fixed" she kept licking at stitches and had to have the cone.
Poor dear, she was so horrible embarrassed by it and the worst part was when she'd hang her head in misery the cone would go flat on the floor and she'd be stuck temporarily and, of course, it was so hard not to laugh at her.
At the time, DH could take her to work with him so he did. She'd curl up under his workbench and everytime she'd start licking all he had to do was say, "AAAANH, I'll have to put That Thing on your head." and she'd stop.
Years later if she started licking or scratching or something obnoxious all you had to do was tell her if she didn't stop we'd "...put That Thing on your head." and she'd stop immediately. :67302:
ETA: Good news, we don't owe the feds after all. Just a wee refund, but better than owing. I was able to take advantage of deducting General Sales Tax instead of state tax.

Pics of a cute court house by H H Richardson
"
The Current Allegheny County Courthouse
Following the destruction of the second courthouse, Allegheny County Commissioners decided to hold a competition to design a replacement. The winner of the competition was Boston architect H.H. Richardson and construction of the buildings was begun by the Norcross Brothers, Richardson's construction firm of choice, in 1884. The jail portion of the complex was completed in 1886, the year of Richardson's death and the entire court house was finished in 1886 by Sheply, Rutan and Coolidge, Richardson's successor firm. The total cost of the project up to that time was over two and a quarter million dollars.
The design of the main building, which Richardson considered to be his finest, was innovative in that the building is built around an interior courtyard, thus allowing natural light and fresh air to reach most of the building. The courtyard is surrounded by four stories in three sides. A tower rises five stories from the courtyard's open side. As was usually the case with Richardson's buildings, the roof is steep with dormers placed at all the corners.
The prison is connected to the main building by the "Bridge of Sighs." The entire complex was built of large rusticated blocks of granite, with the entrance ways and windows toped with wide arches. This gives the building a heavy, stable and dignified appearance.
The design of the Allegheny County Courthouse has influenced buildings in many cities across America.
In 1974, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places."
===the year I started and I was named one too.

Allegheny County Courthouse and Morgue
The Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail is widely considered an architectural masterpiece. It is a monumental stone bldg designed by Boston architect Henry Hobson Richardson in the 1880's. A tour of the interior reveals some of the impressive construction features, and workers give their impressions of this remarkable building.
:basic44:The morgue is also a popular attraction downtown. Workers talk about the old custom of teenagers visiting the morgue on prom night! Workers also give perspective on the building of the new morgue. :basic44:

Anne, Pittsburgh, spelled Pittsburg way back when was a very rich city. There were families, of the Mellons, Carnegie, Scaife, Benedum and among others. Also we have a few of their beautiful mansions still standing.
I was able to live in one for a year when I was a student. The Benedum family had lived there and donated it to the hospital. Then the Benedum family paid a full scholarship for each student. The school at the hospital was also called the Benedum School of Medical Technology. The mansion was gorgeous! I think there were 10 of living there, plus our house mother. lol plus 1 cat!

"This Gothic Victorian structure once served as the Chickasaw National Capitol when it was originally built in 1896. It was designed to overlook the town on a grand hill by architect J. A. Shannon. In 1910, Johnston County purchased the structure for $15,000 and it served as the county courthouse until 1992 when the Chickasaw Nation bought in back for $575,000. Johnston County finished its current courthouse, down the hill from this one in 1993. Because this courthouse was built in 1896, this is one of the oldest structures in the state that has served as a county courthouse."

I love the old structures. When I was a child, we made numerous moves due to my dad's job. My favorite place was a victorian style house in Tyler, TX. It had been beautifully kept. The windows were leaded, etc. To top it off, it was on a brick street. They just do not make houses with that much character any more. I think that is where my love for antiques developed.

That sounds like the old house my paternal grandmother lived in in Parsons, Kansas (that also had some brick streets although this house was not on one). The place where she lived must have, at its prime, been something to behold and it was still striking from the outside. However, it had been cut into a 4-plex (although I don't recall it being called that back then). There were two "apartments" downstairs that shared a bathroom. I used to visit them in the summers when I was a kid.... I'm talking early-mid '50s.
The house sat on a tree shaded street only a short way from town. Which was a good thing since neither my grandmother nor my grandfather ever drove and we walked everywhere. "Pop" worked for the Katy railroad and was gone for days at a time so it was usually just me and my GM there. No air conditioning in that old house (which wasn't really that unusual back then), but there was an exhaust fan set up in the kitchen window and it would pull a nice breeze through the place. Also, on really hot nights I got to sleep out on the porch on the porch swing. No one even considered it might be a dangerous thing to do back then. I loved the "gingerbread" around that porch. At night when the streetlight came on the shadows on the walls looked like dark gray lace.
Thanks for the memory. :friends3:
Oh, Anna, it is. Really neat. Any idea when it was built?

Anna, I love it! It's a fabulous building. I'm also enthralled by the one in Pittsburgh.
I KNOW I've seen those PatC posted and talked about. Tishomingo OK (Johnson County) is 12 miles from Madill, where I grew up.
OC, there is talk here about having high schoolers and prom night going through a death and dying program to maybe prevent a prom night disaster which seems to happen regularly. I've never visited a morgue and it's fine with me not to... :francis:

It never ceases to amaze me when driving into the city and seeing the old courthouse! I love it! I think it was just one time, we visited the morgue post Prom! Gowns and all, we would go trouping in to see whatever!
Found this on the net. Just to make sure ya'll don't think I was the only nut!:67302:

Allegheny County Courthouse and Morgue
The Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail is widely considered an architectural masterpiece. It is a monumental stone bldg designed by Boston architect Henry Hobson Richardson in the 1880's. A tour of the interior reveals some of the impressive construction features, and workers give their impressions of this remarkable building.
:basic44:The morgue is also a popular attraction downtown. Workers talk about the old custom of teenagers visiting the morgue on prom night! Workers also give perspective on the building of the new morgue. :basic44:
I did that! :0t31:
SO DID I.....of course we only got to the lobby=who started that dumb idea?

wooh0^0==I love to see these court house pics and stories=have always collected them and practiced in many other counties so I could see them.
One was so old that the marble steps were worn down from countless feet over the years. It was 117 years old and the tipstaff was too.
Pat=notice the size and color of the stone and arches over entrances look like the HH Richardson in Pgh.
Anna=same design features but smaller stones. Interesting how elegant and beautiful they all are.
Texanne=you are right=the cost today would make it impossible to build these masterpieces.
What would be two and a quarter million 1883 dollars today?
Everyone=be great if you all would post a pic of county court houses you like=anywhere in the country.

That was a real gift for the future and benefited so many students and then the community, Orchid.
They did all that many years ago I am sure. Be so cool living in a mansion at that age.

Hard Times Happy Times
My final fee as a private lawyer was $100,000.
Then I lost everything~my own fault entirely.
Homeless, broke and suicidal, I had a miracle as many of you know on September 23, 1996.
But I had to do my part and work hard to recover.
During my recovery from depression and alcoholism I was on welfare for four years=1996 to 2000.
$205 per month plus food stamps. Paid $185 rent at the MH/MR residence so I had $20 per month for tooth paste and soap and paper products. Had no car so took the bus. Four hours on four buses to a doctor. Coming back had to walk a mile. It was the worst of times and the best of times.
But I had a home and food and my Healer.
Each day I thank God for all I have today. Living solely on my Social Security I am debt free and have a nice car and savings built up.
Peace and happiness are mine; all a gift for giving my heart to God and listening to and doing what he tells me. All for my own good!
God actually has a perfect plan for my life right now. I didn't know that. So I ask him each day for guidance and wisdom for each step and decision.
I know sadly where my own wisdom got me.
Later, he has prepared a special place just for me~
wonder what wonders he has prepared;
he tells me!
"Delight yourself in me and I will give you the desires of your heart."
What are the desires of yor heart?

Yes I remember quite well, but for how long the memory is questionable now since oldtimer's has set in. Hahaaa.
You talk of the desire of the heart. Doesn't it seem the quest for the desire is more rewarding than the desire itself at times anyway? Such a joy!
Good Morning All. It's a glorious day here in S. Mississippi. I think the ground may dry out enough to get some mowing done today and hopefully even finish clearing out my boat/garden.
Oh, dear, Grins, packy.... "the desires of my heart...." now you're going to make me start actually THINKING, aren't you? I think I'll take the Scarlett O'Hara approach to that today and "think about it tomorrow". .. too much else to do today.

Orchid Corsage - we had some clothes in an old trunk from my grandmother's family when I was in high school. I wore one of the dresses from that trunk when I played one of the aunts in "Arsenic and Old Lace" in the 'senior play'.
"One teaspoon of arsenic, a half teaspoon of strychnine and just a pinch of cyanide."
BTW, OC, keep an eye out for one of those pretty hankies and give it to your mom to "keep in her purse" for the next gift occasion.
AmyE, I used to stop at every place along the road that advertised caves. I even did some spelunking with a group when in college. I was stunned when DH and I went to Colorado years ago to find he'd never been in a cave but then I had to realize where he grew up (down here in S. MS.) the water table is so high anything that MIGHT have been a cave would be an under ground LAKE. :0t31:
Grins, I don't think the Oklahoma buildings would have needed to ship granite in from Indiana. See, Granite, Oklahoma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granite,_Oklahoma), about 25 miles North of Altus (the town famous as the birthplace of PatC.... MOI). I don't really know for sure if they did major mining there though, maybe some of my other Okie pals here can answer that.
I remember going and climbing on the "big rocks" with my parents on Granite Mountain.
http://www.summitpost.org/images/original/61322.jpg
I'll have to make a trip over to Poplarville and take some pictures of the court house over there. I think I remember worn steps like you mentioned, Grins. I like that idea of all of us sharing our court houses. Grins did you check out that court house photo link I posted last night?
I've used Google Earth, but never tried Microsoft Virtual Earth. no charge that I've encountered. There are varying results... some of the more major cities have closer resolution than the more remote, more sparcely populated areas, at least that's my experience. You can get neat 'bird's eye views' just using Google or Yahoo maps and selecting "satellite view".
Well, DH is up and dressed so I guess we'll start with some yard work. DS just called and said not to plan anything, he had bought crawfish and was having a boil this afternoon. YUM!

Good Morning!
Today is not a good morning to awake to here. Early this morn, a domestic call to police in Stanton Heights, has risen to two police officers being killed and I believe another two are wounded. A 23 yr old man is still holed up in his house with a AK47 rifle. This is devastating. Not confirmed yet, but he may have surrendered.

Good morning Klatchers! I hope all of you are enjoying nice spring weather. We have opening day for LIttle League here, and the weather is beautiful. So, it is BBQ, baseball, and boys for me this afternoon. I bought several of the fold up chairs that have backs all the way up and a hood so my mom can go without being exposed to the sun. The only dreary thing is that I have to run out for a little shopping and I HATE SHOPPING! It used to be fun. Why is it that walking a mile through an antique fair is easy, but a trip through Dillards or Walmart wears me out?
PatC: I loved your description of you granny's house. I was struck by the fact that you mentioned he worked for the Katy railroad. My dad was a railroad man also. He developed the habit of finding houses near town because during WWII gasoline was rationed and the men often walked to work. It was 1953 before he moved us out on a farm/ranch where we could learn to ride horses, grow veggies, etc. When people ask me if I am a country girl or a city girl, or where I am from....It takes me a while to decide how to answer.
Oh, Orchid ...I just read your post. That is horrible. Our good friend and neighbor is a state law enforcement officer, and I pray for his safety. He is a wonderful family man and neighbor. People do not appreciate what they face day in and day out.

We owe so much to our law enforcement officers. My heart goes out to the families of the slain LEOs. Grins: You are absolutely right about our Law enforcement officers. Some prefer to concentrate on the few bad apples in the barrel. But who do they call on when things go wrong? I feel bad today because I found out that our neighbor LEO was home resting yesterday and that my grandson (who was home because he had a fever in the a.m.) had his amp in the window and was blasting out on his guitar. This was in the short while that I ran to the bank to make a deposit for the family biz. The boy knows better, and now we are deciding what nice little thing he can do to make up for it. I'm thinking mow the yard next time they need it. Ours is such a quiet neighborhood, so that makes it worse. I am dreading when all 5 are teenagers, because this one is only 12 and is seldom in trouble. So far the neighbor is his hero, as he should be.
Oh dear, texanne. I'm sure the boy just wanted to "share" his music. :0t31:
I'm sorry for laughing but that is such a typical thing for a boy that age to have done. I think at that age their brains are so consumed with trying to figure out what's happening to them... not yet a "grown up" and don't want to be a "boy"... their bodies seem to have turned on them... hair growing in strange places, "disturbing" dreams at night... even their voices betray them by changing pitch at the most embarrassing times... that they lose sight of the rest of the world.
I love the idea of having him "make it up" to the neighbor though. What a meaningful way of making a point! Kudos to you, texanne. :give_rose:

Speaking of Granite... One of the threats I heard from mother while in my teens was, "If you don't behave, I'm sending you to Granite!"
Had I only known that never in her wildest dreams would she have done such a thing... for one reason, whatever I did wasn't all that 'bad,' but, was only a great aggravation to her........... which may have been my intention, I don't recall exactly. I'm sure all of it wasn't for that reason.
I wanted to get a job in summer and Christmas vacation the way some of my girlfriends did, but, they wouldn't hear of it. Preferably, I would read and draw. (And think up stuff to do and then be threatened with a trip to Granite. LOL) But, certainly, don't work. Mother had to work in cotton fields when she was growing up and her daughter was not going to work.
So far as the mountain and also the rock formations on Arbuckle Mountains... my dad often pointed out the whys and wherefores of all that... which I very much enjoyed hearing.

Funny about Granite=and we don't wonder exactly why parents say certain stuff=work she surely explained=cannot imagine working in a field all hot day=

Orchid=had many cases in your court house=always liked it sitting high on a hill which you do not get the sense of from the pics=lots of similarities to Pgh too=arched entry ways and one floor of huge arched windows=set back sections each side=and just stunning to see! The newer annex as usual most places is boring....
Entering all these court houses, you get a sense of the majesty of the law and how important it that we have such a place for our protection. Tyrants do not have court houses.

Grins, mom tended to put it all into the word WORK... it didn't penetrate my ignorant brain and when the town school was dismissed for 2 weeks so country kids could pick cotton, I pouted because I couldn't since lived in town. My dad arranged for my older bro and me to go pick cotton.......... Wheeeeeeeee... I was so excited. I got to go pick cotton!
Welllllllll... you mean I pull that heavy scratchy block-long sack behind me? Sure. Put the sling over yer shoulder and head down that way, Ali, you'll get the hang of it... Uhhh... ok.
Also learned the bolls have sharply pointed places all around that stick into fingers as the cotton is pulled off and put into the bag, which, has yet to show any cotton in it, although, I've put quite a bit in.........
Never been so glad to see my dad's car coming up the road. I turned around and by then it was really hard to pull the sack... The farmer gave me 50 cents and I heard mother say it was too much.
Now, THAT got through to me what it meant to work in cotton fields.
Now that I've typed all this, it seems to me I've told it on here before... mebbe it will be new to some. LOL
TamTam, Happy Birthday to all.... and still waiting for my ice cream, I know you sent me some too, not mentioning it was just an over sight, right?
Ali, I think my early introduction to those granite mountains started my lifelong love of rock formations and to my taking some courses in college in geology even though it had nothing to do with my course of study.
Grins, when Ali's mom threatened to send her to Granite it was because that's where the state Reformatory was. :0t31: I don't think either of us mentioned that before.
I know what you mean about the feelings you get when you enter one of those old court houses. There is just an aura about them that it's hard to explain. It's more than the super high ceilings and marble floors and slightly echoing sounds as you walk about.
Nice turn of phrase, "... a sense of the majesty of the law ...." Very apt.
Ali, picking cotton was never anything I ever aspired to do. I heard for years my paternal grandmother whine about how hard picking cotton was and the bloody fingers at the end of the day and the soar shoulder from dragging the sack, wahhh, wahhh, wahhh. Then I found out that if she ever picked cotton it wasn't for more than an hour or so at a time. My Dad ratted her out.
Very entertaining way to tell your experience though, you have an excellent way with words too.
BIG NEWS -- I bought a camera!!!! I couldn't stand it any longer and I'm gonna go read the book on it and start playing with it as soon as I finish this post. I ended up getting a Canon PowerShot A590.

Later, he has prepared a special place just for me~
wonder what wonders he has prepared;
he tells me!
"Delight yourself in me and I will give you the desires of your heart."
What are the desires of yor heart?
Grins, you make my heart smile.:)

Hi above to AMY! :kissyface4: Is this the last day of your Spring Break? Hope it was a good one! I miss you! :kissyface4:
PatC, yes I can still find Mom a pretty lacy hanky and mail it to her, you are right she will love it! Mom had a hanky drawer. It was the top left vanity drawer! :yes2: I would love to have seen you all dressed up in the 'old' clothes. Our youngest daughter and a friend of hers use to put them on and play in the gardens, they were a real hoot with the big hats and all! That was when video cameras were all the rage, so I have those pics, but none of me LOL
Grins, so nice to hear you are familiar with our courthouse. It is as if walking back in time. I was called for jury duty several times, never picked because I know too many of the judges and attorneys there, but I was there long enough to sit and admire the wonderful settings. The old courtrooms are so beautiful with the old mahogony wood decor.
Tam, Happy Birthdays to your loved ones! I want some Dairy Queen Cake too! :kissyface4: p l e s e :11_2_104:
Ali, what did you think was going to happen to you at Granite? :0t31: That was so funny! Then picking cotton, LOL what a job! My dad didn't want me to work either, he said I would have enough time in my life to work. However, he made me work at the drugstore every Sunday morning after church at the soda fountain and when some of the other clerks were on vaca. I guess he didn't let me work somewhere because then he wouldn't have me to cover the vaca's and be a soda jerk on Sunday. :0t31:
One day a lady ordered an Ice Cream Soda. I put some ice in it and she yelled at me~~~hey I didn't know ice didn't go in there! I still remember her! :45024:
DRJAN, so glad to hear you are doing so well! :kissyface4:

OC, I was clueless as to what might happen to me at Granite and later, as an adult, learned it was a BOYS reformatory. LOL LOL
During the time my 2 children were growing up, I kept waiting for them to do some of what I'd done, but, they didn't... at least I didn't know about it. My daughter was an angel and the only argument we had she was 15 and later, neither of us could remember what it was about. Our son was a bit more of a hassle... LOL... but, nothing serious. I was fortunate and still am. )))))))
By the way, I have a dear longtime cyber-friend in Pittsburgh. She and I have at time burned up the email lines between here and there. LOL

Oh, wow, PatC! It looks fierce and scary! In high school 2 boys younger than me... I was probably 16 and they were 13/14... they were caught stealing gasoline from county equipment. Maybe they had prior trouble, but, they were sent to a reformatory. I'm not sure if it was Granite.

Prayers for all slain officers and loved ones and fellow officers. Prayers for all those planning evil; change their hearts Lord or strike them down as of old.
Many years working with police officers and fire fighters taught me they are subject to more than even death each day.
Rotating shifts, sleep problems, marriage difficulties, missed family days of importance, long hours investigating scenes of crime; outside in extreme weather with no place to go for relief from cold or heat or rain; calls in the middle of the night, disrespect from citizens and some lawyers who attack them during a trial as incompetent and biased and more~
When my father died, they arrived at the funeral home to pay respects and support me and my family.
Often, my case homicide detectives would just come off night shift and be at my side in the courtroom prepared to testify or take care of some concern for me. They would stay all day without complaint.
When I received death threats during a trial, two detectives went with me everywhere. They were prepared to die to protect me.
There is no greater love ~

Driving to Isabella's 4th birthday party afterwhile. She is into jewelry, so, as an extra, I'm taking her a box of items I don't wear. Future days of 'dress-up' will be enhanced. lol Years ago, I bought several 'lots' on Ebay... much as been in boxes in my junk room/sewing room.
I didn't even think about Lake Murray... just assumed Lake Texoma! So, Amy, which lake? )))))
BYW, I was 12 during the picking cotton incident. I was older when threatened with Granite... lol... which most usually was brought about when I was insolent to mother. I don't remember knowing how to push her buttons, but, back then, I must have known.
Ali, "The Lake" always meant Texoma to me too, but in reading about Granite Lake Murray popped up so I wondered????
My mother loved costume jewelry and had some nice stuff but I never wear it myself so back when the twins were little I gave them each a box of it to play "dress up" with. They also loved to play "dress up" with my scarves.
Take yur camera to the party... we want to see birfday pics.

Amy, good luck this week, I know you can do it! Just relax and take your time!
Ali, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to dear little Isabella! Oh she will love the jewelry. When my ganddaughters were here last summer, I gave them a lot of my Mom's jewelry to take home, and they are still dressing up in it. Their eyes lit up and were so thrilled, they thought they had a goldmine!
PatC, great new camera huh? I hate having to learn a new one, which is alaways happening here. Then I get them all mixed up.
It is going to be a beautiful day here, a high of 60, then snow and freezing weather for tomorrow, go figure! He is golfing today, but not tomorrow!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to HFTM in general and to the Koffee Klatch specifically.
You have chosen a topic for your blog that is near and dear to the hearts of us all. "Enough" can never be done to further the cause. Many thanks for whatever you can do along those lines.
It can, however, be a daunting and depressing task so we here at the Koffee Klatch are a merry band of mischief makers who attempt to lighten the load with friendship, a place to discuss ANY topic of interest to our members, and in general "decompress" with each other. Many wonderful and close friendships have been forged here and we accept you with open arms to our group.
You will find fun and foolishness as well as compassion and concern for each other here. We hope you come back often and enjoy the experience both here and in the other forums at HFTM.
:happy0158:
The weather here is beautiful right now but apparently going to change. DH said he heard that a cold front was on it's way and we can expect it to get back down to mid-30s :zm1: Whhhaaaaa.
OC, I've been scanning the book that came with the new camera... after I took a bunch of pictures yesterday. :yes2:
I'm amazed at what it's capable of at the price. Fortunately, it has an "Auto" setting that pretty much makes it "idiot-proof"... until I make a bigger idiot of myself...
It does, however, allow you to set the shutter speed and the aperture (something I haven't attempted since my 35mm SLR days back in the late 60s) and it also has the capability of accepting additional lens (a optional accessories). If I'd noticed all that I might have been too skeert to get it. :0t31:
The biggest plus to me was it has a View Finder. My old Sony Cyber-Shot had one and we didn't give it a second thought. DH bought himself a digital camera to carry with him on the job and neither of us noticed it didn't have a View Finder till he started having trouble in bright daylight seeing the image to be taken on the LCD screen.
When I started looking around I found you have to pay a lot more $$$ (over $350 it seemed) to get one with a view finder any more but this Canon was under $130.00.
You can bet I'll be posting pics soon. :basic44:
Back from walmart... LOL! I spent way too much. Well, we are going to Lake Murray! Oh my lord...I think I bought way too much snacks...lol. Anyways, I hope it doesn't rain or I will be stuck at the house.
Oh, I am trying to stay on topic here but ya know...my brain is running wild today. So much to think about and to get done. No prepositions in essay.... jotted that down in my books! LOL! Sorry folks...I was just thinking Lake Murray, totally forgot that we do have another Lake...duh...LMAO.
Oh shucks...I know what I forgot at walmart...urgg... I was gonna buy the stuff to make edible play doh for the kids. Looks like I will have to make another trip this week. I always forget something.

NO, no, Amy. I didn't say "no prepositions!!!!" You're just not supposed to end a sentence with one. Of course to adhere to that strictly we'd end up saying something stilted like, "That is something up with which I will not put."

PatC, I have to have DH read your camera post! I know what he will say, "hang out with her more often"! :friends3: He always want me to get with it with the cameras, but I have a mental block with them. not
By the way if interested, I posted some articles in BN about the shootings in Pgh yesterday. The shooter was one very (s)ick person. My heart is breaking for the slain police officers and their families.

Has everyone done their taxes already? I was going to start on mine and then got sidetracked on mowing part of the yard. Oh well there is always tomorrow. Geesh I'm a procrastinator. :serious:
I did everyone's tax returns BUT ours.... suddenly last Wed. I remembered. :frustratedf:
I got it finished now I have to assemble everything and send it off. Hope I remember to do that tomorrow morning before the mail runs.

Thanks, Grins. Swipe it? You may have written it.... PatC reading back....:INhouseReading04:

Welcome to our new Klatchers! Good friends, good fun for everyone!
Now, I sent all of you some DQ ice cream cake. If you didn't get yours, give your mail carrier one of these. :eyebrow1qb:
I woke up with the entire left side of my head plugged up solid. Weirdest feeling ever. Kind of like when you get water in your ear. I've taken some guaifenesin that I had left from the tail end of my bout with bronchitis. It's helped some but I'm almost out so I'll have to get some more. It's probably allergies kicking in now that spring is here. (Kind of spring anyway)
All this talk about courthouses had hubby and I discussing ours last night. It's such a unique place to be in. All this marble and wide open up to the ceiling. I swear you could walk in the door, whisper, and be heard on the top floor. The echo is unbelievable! I always want to take my shoes off and walk in my socks so I don't make so much noise. :0t31:
Prayers going out for all slain LE and their families! :innocent0001:
Thanks everyone! I am praying all goes well on my test. I am just gonna tell my story and hope they like it. If I pass, I should know Thursday (I think). So, I will let you all know how it goes before heading off to the Lake.
OC- We are heading out there (Lake Murray) Friday and coming back Sunday. My uncle and his wife and 2 kids are going with us. We are gonna have a great Easter. We are gonna let the kids decorate their eggs out there and have many easter games for them to play and win prizes. We have it all planned to keep their whole weekend busy and much fun too. I can't wait to play pin the tail on the bunny...LOL!

Well I know that here, especially around the holidays, you find clogs of people in the aisles chatting it up as if they were at a family reunion. Enough already, buy some cookies and go on to someone's house and make coffee, ya know?

Oh, they use it as a meeting place, I get it. :hifive:

No stinulus check like last year, anna. Employeed folks will be 'stimulatead' by having lower amounts as withholding out of their check starting this month (and owing less for this year). People on Social Security, VA benefits, etc. will be getting a one time increase this month ($250 I think), and self employeed will get their stimulation by not having as much tax to pay for their Tax Year 2009 taxes.
Tee, the "family reunion" comment referred to what irks so many of us with people doing a "meet and greet" in the aisles and blocking them while they catch up on the latest news of their respective families.
A while back we were discussing the phenomon ... it happens here all the time. People block the aisles and pay no attention to the back up they're causing.

IMO. Can we go back to the Rotary phone so that we don't have to dial one to proceed in English?
These are your options
If you would like to read this and English press – ONE
If you would like to read this in Spanish press -- DOS
If you would like to read this in French press -- TWA
If we don’t want to read this press-- I AM OUT OF HERE
Can we get that printed on a dollar bill

Well, I get a bonus on my unemployment of $25 per week, plus I don't pay taxes on the first $2,400 and I found out today, I can collect for 77 weeks. Well, actually I haven't gotten my first check yet, but my mom told me all that.

got a full pot of coffee in the recreational vehicle off to go get some help the liquid petroleum gas so that my generator will work. some nephews, neighbors , and neighbors with children all want to go somewhere this summer. It's almost like having a truck and someone needs to move, but I love it. So much for the gardening this year ? Maybe I can get the nephews and the neighbors to help me . Thank god we've got crates for the two cats and two dogs plus , the neighbors two dogs and cat. Good thing have one of the neighbors watching the fish, could you imagine that in a recreational vehicle ? I'm sure they would go into a depression if any recognized a boat behind the recreational vehicle . :smiley_aasg:

Mornin' Pat, Dave and Tee! Beautiful day but a little chilly. Ins. adjuster was at my house Friday afternoon and I was really impressed with this young man. Very personable, knowlegeable, and I think is going to be very fair with all the damage done. On Saturday the contractor (he built my house) came out to give me a quote and had his estimate back to me on Sunday afternoon. I had another recommended to me by a friend that also came out gave me an on the spot quote ....... $3,000 for all damage inside and out.:rolleye0001: I thought there is no way that this is just $3,000 worth of damage. When I received the estimate from my contractor, guess what? Almost $20,000 in damage and this is just what he can see for now. Will have to check the integrity of the chimney when he gets the cedar down to look. Do you think I should go with the $3,000 guy? He was very confident that he would do me a great job! NOT!!!!!!! :0t31:

BLass.... Did your $3000 contractor arrive in his Tonka truck?
He may be one of those a lot of folks from New Orleans are looking for right now.... shotguns at the ready. :67302:
I gathered that your contractor gave you an estimate broken down by what had to be done with a price by each element? Will you still have to find another "real" estimate?

Watching a Wall street pillow fight. It looks hilarious....but I would not want to join in. We used to have pillow fights as kids and my big brother would try to knock my head off. I will give him credit for teaching me to stand my ground an defend myself.
Tam....allergy outbreaks here too. I normally do not have allergic reactions to anything, but something "new" seems to have blown in.

No he had his daughter drive him up in her pink Barbie Mustang!:girl_haha: Yes he did break out the estimate for me, but the bozo with the $3,000 bid did not.....just spent a h*ll of a lot of time lookie-looking and just said he would charge $3,000 for whole job ... inside and out! I was like :waitasec: where did this alien come from? I talked to the adjuster this a.m. and he said if I felt confident with the contractor that built my house I would not have to have another bid.
