CRITTENDEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Emergency crews are searching for a missing man after a boat overturned overnight in Crittenden County on the Ohio River.
Two men were apparently camping at the Old Dam 50 Landing in Crittenden County when their 12 ft. fishing boat overturned, according to Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
One man was rescued after a worker with the Cave-in-Rock Ferry was moving barges around midnight. Todd says when they idled their engines to tie off a barge, crew members heard screaming across the river. One man was found covered in mud on the Kentucky shore. He was taken to the LaFarge Quarry Dock where workers wrapped him in blankets and called an ambulance.
Todd says the two men may be from Indiana.
The Crittenden County Sheriff's Office and Rescue Squad, Hardin County, IL, Rescue Squad, and the Coast Guard are searching for the missing man.

I hope he's on shore somewhere, too. I've seen about four of these boating accidents on the past couple weeks.

Lifejackets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :groan: Especially in a boat!
Having just personally witnessed the loss and devastation to an entire family because the lack judgement of the use of a lifejacket, this just tears me up! IF ONLY he had a life jacket on at the time!
Same thing in this case. My heart-felt thoughts and prayers go out to the missing man and his family for a good outcome.
WATER + BOAT = LIFEJACKETS!
It is called a LIFEjacket for a reason!

Search on for Indiana man missing on the Ohio River
By The Associated Press
Thursday, April 2, 2009
MARION, Ky. — The operator of a tugboat helped rescue a fisherman from the Ohio River who feared that his friend had drowned.
"It was just after midnight when we heard someone hollering for help on the Kentucky side of the river," said Lonnie Lewis, who was pulling a load of rock with his boat. "He was weak and really suffering. I heard him say, 'I think my buddy drowned.''' Neither man was identified, although they were reported by a northern Indiana newspaper to be from the Lake Station area.
The rescued man was reported to have been transported to the Hardin County, Ill., hospital in Rosiclare, which a spokesperson for the facility would not confirm that story.
"The search for the missing man was called off Thursday afternoon when the storm hit," Crittenden County, Ky., Coroner Joe Myers said. "The rescue operation has a camp site at Dam 50 in the Weston section of the county and work will resume (today)."

CRITTENDEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is now helping to search for a missing Indiana boater.
He disappeared late Wednesday night when his 12-foot John boat tipped over along the shore of Crittenden County, Kentucky in the Ohio River.
A ferry crew rescued another man who remains hospitalized Friday morning.
The two were apparently night fishing on the river when their boat sank. Neither was wearing a life jacket, but the man who was rescued managed to grab one as he fell into the water.

River search continues for missing fisherman
CAVE-IN-ROCK, Ill. — The search continued Saturday for an Indiana fisherman presumed drowned in the Ohio River near Cave in Rock, after his fishing boat capsized Wednesday night.
The search for Daniel David Rust, 45, of Lake Station, Ind., was called off Thursday afternoon when severe thunderstorms rolled across the region but was resumed Friday.
A Hardin County, Ill., dive team equipped with an underwater camera has been aiding the rescue squad and Crittenden County (Ky.) Sheriff's Department, the Coast Guard and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife in the search.
According to Crittenden County Emergency Management officials, Rust and a friend, Patrick May, also of Lake Station, had been camping near the Dam 50 recreation area in northern Crittenden County. They decided to go fishing, and their 12-foot boat capsized in the Ohio.
May floated two miles downriver before reaching the Kentucky shore. Workers and the owner of the Cave-in-Rock ferry were doing maintenance when they heard his call for help and brought him to the Illinois side of the river.
May first was taken to a hospital in Hardin County and later transferred to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, where he was reported in good condition Friday afternoon.

Boat Capsized Near Cave-In-Rock

Search Continues For Missing Man
Severe weather forced search crews to stop looking for a man who disappeared on the Ohio River early Thursday morning. Two men were fishing around midnight when their boat capsized near the Old Dam 50 Park and Recreation Area in Crittenden County, Kentucky. An Indiana newspaper reports the missing man is 45 year old Daniel David Rust of Lake Station. Rust is presumed to have drowned. The other man, Patrick May survived. May was found downstream on the bank of the river.
The camp fire still burns as search teams comb the Ohio River in Crittenden County. It's the first sign of a camping trip gone horribly wrong.
Deputy Greg Rushing says problems started on the water during a fishing trip late Wednesday night.
"They were coming back to the boat ramp but before they got to the ramp they hit something and the boat capsized," Rushing explained. "They both hit the water and sure the other gentleman with him drowned," he added.
Information Rushing says came directly from the survivor of the crash, Patrick May. He was found near death on the banks of the ohio river. May is now in stable condition at an area hospital.
"We went right by him. He was so muddy, wet he blended into the bank. If he hadn't hollered we'd never know he was there," said Lonnie Lewis.
Lewis was pushing a barge on the Illinois side of the Ohio River when they heard the screams of the man and went in to help.
"We had a big long extension ladder put out so the deck hands put it on the bank and pulled him on the boat," Lewis explained.
Deputy Rushing says both men had come to Kentucky from Indiana and neither was wearing life vests. A dangerous situation made even worse in unfamiliar territory.
"I've been on the river at night and it can fool you if you don't have a spotlight. It's easy to think that you are too close to the shore and actually you are in the river channel," said Rushing.
Deputies still don't know what happened to the boat or where it was when it capsized. They plan to keep combing the water and do what they can so families can find closure.
Keith Todd, with the Kentucky Department Highways, says the two men were camping at the Old Dam 50 Landing in Crittenden County when they decided to take an overnight fishing trip. That's when the boat overturned.
A harbor boat run by the operator of the Cave-In-Rock Ferry was moving barges in the area around midnight. Crew members said they heard someone screaming across the river while idling. They went to investigate and found one victim on the Kentucky shore covered in mud. The survivor was taken to the LaFarge Quarry Dock where workers wrapped him in blankets and called an ambulance.
Lonnie Lewis, owner of the ferry, was piloting the harbor boat that picked up the survivor.

Weather Hurts Search For Indiana Man

CRITTENDEN COUNTY, KY - Monday's weather posed a major obstacle in the search for a missing Indiana man. Daniel David Rust disappeared last Thursday when his boat capsized on the Ohio River near Crittenden County.
Rust and Patrick May were fishing when their boat overturned. Ferry workers found May a couple of hours later on the banks of the river, crews have been searching for Rust ever since.
Emergency Management Director Greg Rushing says rescue workers anticipated this weather, and tried to get as much work done as they could over the weekend when conditions were better.
Another problem facing rescuers is they haven't been able to pinpoint the exact location where the boat went down. Also, as an open body of water, the Ohio River makes for a long search area. Dive teams are focusing efforts two miles down river from the Old Dam 50 recreation area, near where Patrick May was found. Rushing says May has been able to provide some information to crews, but without a clear starting point, the search lacks strong direction.
Rust's wife, daughter, and other family members from Lake Station, Indiana are in town receiving daily updates on the rescue's progress. Efforts wrapped up today just after sunset. Crews hope to rotate more people tomorrow to resume the search.

Boat recovered from Ohio River
Thursday, April 16, 2009
The capsized boat a Lake Station man was in when he and a friend fell into the Ohio River on April 2 has been recovered, Crittenden County Deputy Greg Rushing said.
But the search continues for the body of Daniel David Rust, 45, who is presumed drowned, Rushing said.
"We recovered the boat on Monday. I just wish we would have found him," he said.
The 12-foot V-bottom fishing boat was spotted 34 miles down river from where the vessel had overturned, spilling both Rust and his friend, Pat May, of Lake Station, into the water.
The man who spotted the overturned boat, floating near the Illinois border, had heard of the accident through media accounts and contacted authorities, Rushing said.
He said the fact that the recovered boat wasn't damaged confirms the story of May who survived the fall into the river and who was found alive on the banks by searchers.
"He (May) told us that the boat had capsized then began taking in water," Rushing said.
He said that's a possibility given the small size of the boat and the roughness of the water.
May, who suffered injuries from the accident, was taken to an Evansville hospital and later released.
Rushing said the search for Rust's body will continue through Saturday.
"Then, after that point we may consider scaling back the search," he said.
Family members, including Rust's sister, Cindy Thompson, said they have accepted that their loved one has most likely drowned.
Now, after Rust has been missing for two weeks, the family is seeking closure and would like to be able to bring his body home to Lake Station, Thompson said.

Body of Indiana fisherman found at Smithland Lock
9:31 AM CDT, April 24, 2009
SMITHLAND, Ky. - Workers at the Smithland Lock and Dam have found the body of an Indiana fisherman, missing since April 1.
The lockmaster reported the discovery inside a gate of the dam Thursday afternoon.
Livington County Coroner Jeff Armstrong told The Paducah Sun he confirmed the body was that of 45-year-old Daniel David Rust from his driver's license.
Rust was from Lake Station, Ind.
He and a companion were fishing at night from a 12-foot boat when it sank in the Ohio River near Cave-in-Rock, Ill.
Barge workers rescued Patrick May, who had grabbed a life vest as the boat went under.
The dam at Smithland is about 25 miles southwest of Cave-in-Rock.
