New charges for bronx dad accused of strangling daughter

A Bronx dad accused of strangling his pregnant teen daughter and throwing her body in a furnace last year was the father of her unborn child, authorities said yesterday.

DNA testing showed that Miguel Matias' 14-year-old daughter, Ana, was carrying his child when she was savagely strangled and brutally burned in February 2008, according to Bronx DA spokesman Steven Reed.

Matias, who was already charged with murder for burning her in the furnace of the Walton Avenue building where he worked as the super, yesterday was indicted for rape, incest and endangering the welfare of a child, court papers show.

He allegedly sexually abused the teen in November 2007, officials said.

Matias, 35, pleaded not guilty to the new charges yesterday before Judge Steven Barrett at Bronx Supreme Court. The defendant has also pleaded not guilty to murder, although police have said he confessed.

His lawyer, Roy Schwartz, did not return a call for comment yesterday, but has noted in the past that his client has a history of mental illness.

Miguel Matias Has A Fiery Temper

The Bronx, NY – Miguel Matias, 36, called the NYPD on Saturday morning about 10:00 a.m. and told them that his daughter Anna should not have been texting a boy on his computer. Then he said that he’d killed the fourteen-year-old and put her body in a wooded area in the Bronx, which should have been the first clue he was lying. Then he said he’d blacked out and couldn’t remember exactly where he’d put his daughter’s corpse.

Police searched about fifty square yards of Bronx wilderness and decided to take a gander at Matias’ apartment building instead. Anna Matias was found in the boiler room, where she had been strangled, stripped naked and stuffed into a boiler to burn. Authorities were not able to tell whether Anna was dead when she was stuffed into the boiler.

Thing is, this isn’t the first time Miguel Matias has tried to kill his children. A few years ago, Matias did time in the psych unit after pouring gasoline inside his car with himself and two of his children inside - one of whom was Anna. He didn’t quite get the car to burn, though. Matias and his wife Jocelyn later separated, and - get this - Matias had visitation rights to his children.

I’m gonna need a WTF moment here, kids. Legal visitation rights to kids he attempted to murder? Holy flaming cats. That’s wrong on so many levels I get dizzy just thinking about it.

On Friday night, preliminary evidence shows that the murder went down pretty much the way Matias said it did with the exception of body location. Anna Matias was visiting her father from Pennsylvania, where she lived with her mother and two siblings. Matias got mad, killed Anna, and decided that since he was the building super, nobody else would check the boiler before his child’s body burned in the boiler flames. As it was, Anna’s nude body was on fire when police found it.

Neighbors, gathered last night at a shrine for the girl, said they knew Matias had a history of emotional problems and violence. “He used to beat Anna in the hallways,” said a man who wouldn’t give his name. “He had a bad temper.” But other neighbors recalled Matias as a good guy who even volunteered at a homeless shelter.

Matias is reported to have moved into the basement apartment of the building where he was the superintendent about a year and a half ago. He is said to have had a girlfriend living with him - no word on where she was when this murder was going down.

Anna’s mother Jocelyn collapsed on hearing the news of her daughter’s death and was taken to the hospital. Anna had been telling her friends that her father beat her and screamed at her, and that he hurt her if she was late getting home. Still, nobody called anyone.

A psycho Bronx building super who allegedly admitted strangling his teen daughter for text-messaging a boy was asked by cops where her body was and snidely replied, "That's your job. Go find out," relatives said yesterday.

"When the police came [to the home], they said, 'Where is Ana?' " recalled Jessica Aquino, the sister of murder suspect Miguel Matias and aunt of his daughter, Ana Matias, 14.

Aquino said her brother taunted them to "find out."

Aquino said she first got a phone call from her brother Saturday morning asking her to come quickly to his apartment.

"He didn't tell me what he did. He just said it was an emergency. He sounded confused and very worried," she said.

"I got there . . . and then he told me what he did. He started giving me the keys to his car and the computer and [Ana's brothers]," Aquino said. "I thought he was joking. He said, 'Oh, you don't believe me.' Then he called my uncle Pablo and told him to come. When Pablo came he told us again, and then he called the police and told them to come."

" 'I killed my daughter,' " Matias told cops, Aquino said. "He called twice. That's when I believed."

Police soon found the burning body of young Ana Matias in the boiler of the family's Walton Avenue apartment building, where Miguel Matias, dumped it after attacking her Friday night, authorities said. He has been charged with her murder.

"I still don't believe it," Aquino said, "because I spoke to her the same night. And the three of us - that is, me, Miguel and Ana - were joking around. He was close to Ana. They were like friends."

NYC dad admits killing daughter found in boiler

NEW YORK — A New York City father has pleaded guilty to murdering the 14-year-old daughter who was pregnant with his child and stuffing her body in a boiler.

Miguel Matias (mah-TEE’-ahs) pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in a Bronx court. He faces 25 years to life in prison.
Ana Matias was found stuffed in the boiler in her father’s apartment building in February after he called 911 to report what he had done.
Initially, Matias told police he strangled the girl because she was typing “sex things” on her computer.
An investigation revealed the girl was 12 weeks pregnant with her father’s child.
