Authorities in northeast Iowa are looking for a missing Oelwein man. At about 9:30 Saturday night, the Fayette County Sheriff received a report of a vehicle left in the middle of the road on G Avenue, near Aurora. A responding deputy found no one in the vehicle.
The driver, identified as 44-year-old Trent Allen Smith of Oelwein, could not be located. Authorities have contacted friends and relatives, along with the Buchanan County Sheriff. Smith is described as white, 5'11", 180 pounds. At this time, the Fayette County Sheriff, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa State Patrol airplane, Aurora, Oelwein and Stanley Fire Departments and the Buchanan County Sheriff are conducting an extensive search.
Anyone with information on Smith's whereabouts is asked to contact the Fayette County Sheriff's office.

FAYETTE COUNTY - A search and rescue is underway in Fayette County. Authorities are looking for, Trent Allen Smith of Oelwein.
Smith has been missing since Saturday night. That's when law enforcement received a report of a vehicle in the middle of the road at 1578 G Avenue near Aurora.
A Fayette County Deputy responded to find no one in the vehicle. Officials say Smith's friends and relatives have been unable to contact him. Smith is 5'11", 180 lbs and 44 years old.

Trent Smith Missing
An in-depth search is under way for Trent Smith, 44, of Oelwein, whose unoccupied vehicle was found Saturday night in the middle of G Avenue near Aurora.
Both Fayette and Buchanan County deputies have since checked with Smith's friends and relatives but have been unable to locate him, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office said.
A Fayette County deputy responding to the 9:25 p.m. call was unable to find Smith in the area surrounding the abandoned vehicle, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office said.
Smith is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds.
In addition to the sheriff's offices, the Iowa State Patrol and fire departments from Oelwein, Aurora and Stanley have joined the search, and the State Patrol airplane has been engaged.

Authorities searching for missing Oelwein man

OELWEIN - The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has issued a missing person’s notice for an Oelwein man, Trent Allen Smith.
The Sheriff’s Office issued a notice that Smith, 44, was missing following an incident that occurred Saturday, April 4, about 9:25 p.m.
The Sheriff's Office reported getting a report of a vehicle in the middle of the road on County Road W45 at 1578 G Ave., about a mile north of Aurora .
A Fayette County Deputy responded to the location and discovered no one was in the vehicle. He checked the area for Smith and then checked with numerous friends and relatives with assistance from the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office.
Smith was unable to be located.
He is described as being 5'11" tall, weighs 180 pounds.
The Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa State Patrol Airplane, Aurora, Stanley and Oelwein Fire Departments are conducting an in-depth search at this time.

Officials call off search for missing man

WEST UNION — Law enforcement officials in Fayette and Buchanan counties called off a search Tuesday for an Oelwein resident reportedly last seen four days earlier.
The search for Trent Smith, 44, lasted 10 hours and covered more than 22 square miles near Aurora, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. The community is near Buchanan County’s northern boundary.
Deputies followed numerous leads Monday and combed the area where Smith’s vehicle was discovered late Saturday night. Officials conducted the search by air and on land and called or contacted Smith’s friends and family members.
The Fayette County sheriff’s office does not suspect foul play but is continuing its investigation. If additional information leads authorities to another area, they may resume the search.

FAYETTE COUNTY - After a four-day search the Fayette County Sheriff's Office reported at approximately 3:23 P.M. Deputies found the body of the missing person Trent Allen Smith, age 44 of Oelwein.
It appears that Smith died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Smith was found in the attic of his home.
The Fayette County Sheriff's Office and the family of Smith would like to thank the Fayette County Emergency Management, Aurora, Oelwein and Stanley Fire Departments, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management, The Iowa State Patrol for the Air and ground officers, the division of criminal investigations (DCI) and all volunteers who helped in the search. “Our prayers and thoughts are with the family”

AURORA - After a four-day search the Fayette County Sheriff's Office reported at approximately 3:23 p.m. Thursday that deputies found the body of the missing person Trent Allen Smith, 44, of Oelwein. Smith was found in the attic of his home and appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
A search began for Smith after his vehicle was found at approximately 9:25 p.m. Saturday, April 4. It had been abandoned in the middle of county road W45 at 1578 G. Ave., about one mile north of Aurora. Sheriff’s deputies from Fayette and Buchanan counties checked with numerous friends and relatives, but turned up nothing.
A more in-depth search began Sunday, with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa State Patrol Airplane, Aurora, Stanley and Oelwein Fire Departments looking for the missing man, along with many volunteers.
By Monday evening, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office called off the search, saying authorities had combed more than 22 square miles, but did not find Smith.
While the search was called off, the investigation into Smith’s disappearance continued with officials following any leads that came into the office.
