I got some info in the mail from them. What do the animal lovers here know about them? Are they good? I'm trying to find out how the money they raised is spent. I don't want to give to something that uses most of its money for administrative costs.

Thank y'all!

My daughter belongs to ASPCA. After a lot of research, I joined Humane Society of the United States some time ago. (HSUS).

I also support our local offshoot group, the one who started the shelter here three years ago, as a no kill shelter. When the county took it over, that changed, and I pulled my membership. I know it's necessary, because of the amount of animals they get, but to keep them 3 days, without even trying to get them adopted before they're euthanized, is something I just cannot support.

O/T Is your friend in Mississippi okay? I didn't see any reports of bad weather around H'ville last night.

i know they are way better than PETA but then the NRA is better than PETA! personally, i'd say research small local shelters & rescues. you know those people aren't getting huge salaries & the money goes to the animals. even better buy stuff & donate it. that's about 100% certain. you might ask your vet about a small organization in your area. I'm always hesitant to donate $$ to any organization. I prefer to find out what's on their Wish List and then buy it - that way I KNOW what my money is being spent on.

Also - depending on how much money you're thinking of donating, find out what kind of surgical supplies are needed. You won't be able to buy some of those, but if you specify on your check what the money MUST be spent on, they have to honor that.

Mary's thread is so true. They can always use blankets, toys, stainless steel dishes, food, dog houses, etc.

Yes, thank you for asking!, she's fine! She said it was pretty scary for a while but they didn't have any damage at their home.

Our daughter volunteers at our local humane society, Cause for Paws and Habitat for Horses. I really like those cause I know the money is used for the animals and what they need.

Thanks for y'all's input!

PETA is just about as rotten and evil as they come. I think the best way to spend money on animal shelters is to a small, local organization as someone suggested. JMO

Several weeks ago I received my annual solicitation letter from the Humane Society, and I gave what little I could. I've been doing this for years.

But, I agree that the best way to help the animals is to give local shelters the "things" they need. Now, the shelter I've been supporting is changing to a "kill" facility, and I don't know what I'm going to do.

I know, AL. It's a tough decision when they turn to kill shelters.

My advice is to think it over, and follow your heart, whichever way it tells you to go.

I'm not saying my decision to pull my support was the right one, but it was the right one for me.
