DILLON, SC (WMBF) - An 11-year-old boy accused of shooting his sister in the face over a bag of potato chips went before a judge at the Dillon County Courthouse Wednesday to plead guilty to assault and battery of high and aggravated nature.
Deputies with the Dillon County Sheriff's Office say the boy, then 10 years old, was at home with his sister when they got into an argument over a bag of chips. They say he then got a shotgun and a shell, and shot his sister.
In court, the state said the shell was empty and the residue from it is what burned his sister's face. Deputy Solicitor Kernard Redman says after the incident, the children, including the boy, went to their grandparent's house for help.
He says the girl stayed in the hospital for a short period of time and was later released.
Fourth Circuit Solicitor Will Rogers says the boy was originally charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, but after reviewing the facts of the case, the boy pled to a lesser charge of assault and battery of high and aggravated nature.
While in court, the boy's court appointed guardian, Janet Byrd, says the boy had completed family counseling and that it had gone well.
"[The boy] is most upset over the fact his sister was hurt in this manner. He recognizes he shouldn't have had a gun and shouldn't have had a shell. That the incident never should have happened," noted Byrd.
The judge accepted the child's guilty plea and says he is to undergo a community evaluation before sentencing will occur.

Wow, perhaps some anger management might be appropriate.
Thank God that shell was empty. I sure hope he realizes the full scope of this incident!
