Woman says she was questioned in Peterson case

April 15, 2009

A local woman says state police paid her a visit while she was doing time in Dwight Correctional Center and grilled her about what she knows of Stacy Peterson's disappearance.
The woman, 31-year-old Jamie Katro, did not tell them much during the two-hour interview.

"No — uh, uh, nothing," Katro said of what she told troopers when they questioned her in late February. "To me, that's what they're getting paid for. Let them do their job."

But Katro says she has heard a few things about what may have befallen Peterson, who vanished in October 2007 and has been the subject of a massive and lengthy state police investigation.
"Like she's not at the bottom of a lake," Katro said. "I heard they ran her through a funeral home and cremated her, her ashes."
Katro said she has never met Peterson or her husband, Drew Peterson, who is the only suspect named in the case worked up by the state police, and that her knowledge of the matter is at best secondhand.
"A lot of it's just hearsay, from what I hear," she said.
Katro was released from prison last month. She was doing time for drug and obstructing justice convictions when the state police showed up.
She figures her mail was monitored and some of her correspondence raised red flags. Katro specifically believes a Christmas card sent by Anthony "Bindy" Rock, a convicted cop killer reputed to have ties to organized crime, got the state police worked up enough to come down and see her in Dwight.
"What got them really interested was Bindy wrote his daughter was mad at him because she thought he had something to do with the ... Peterson murder," she said.
Rock has links to Drew Peterson. In fact, Rock was a central figure in an unsanctioned undercover investigation Peterson undertook while he was on loan from the Bolingbrook Police Department to the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad in 1985. That investigation led to Peterson's indictment on charges of official misconduct and failure to report a bribe.
Peterson was fired following his indictment when the Bolingbrook Police and Fire Commission found him guilty of those charges, as well as disobedience and conducting a self-assigned investigation.
The criminal charges were eventually dropped and Peterson ended up getting his job back.
When asked about Katro and her questioning by the state police, Rock declined to comment.
Likewise, state police Sgt. Juan Valenzuela said he was precluded from commenting about ongoing investigations and witness interviews. He would not confirm or deny whether Katro was interviewed.
Katro said she was reluctant to sit down with the state police.
"I didn't want nothing to do with them," she said. "I just told them Bindy was like an uncle to me. He's helped me out, got me work."
And even though Katro hears things, she says she has learned not to ask too many questions.
"I just don't want to know," she said. "Especially when you're dealing with those kind of people. When you know too much, sometimes those people disappear."

Were Stacy Peterson's remains cremated?

Stacy Peterson, 23

According to a statement by a Dwight Correctional Center parolee, the body of a missing 23-year-old Bolingbrook woman may have been secretly cremated.
In an interview published on April 19, 2009 in the Beacon News (http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/beaconnews/news/1533417,2_1_AU19_PETERSON_S1.article)(part of the Sun Times News Group) , 31-year-old Jaime Katro, who had been serving time for several 2007 felony drug offenses and obstruction of justice, said that from the information she heard in prison, Stacy Peterson’s body may have been brought to a funeral home and cremated.
The young Bolingbrook wife and mother has been missing since October of 2007, when her sister, Cassandra Cales, reported her missing. Since then, Illinois State police have focused on Peterson’s husband, Drew, a 56-year-old retired Bolingbrook police officer.
According to Cales, Stacy had been preparing to leave Peterson, the father of her two young children, and had expressed fears that her husband could harm her. Considering that Peterson's third wife, Kathleen Savio (http://archives.chicagotribune.com/2008/aug/18/local/chi-savio_18aug18), was found dead shortly before her divorce from Peterson was finalized, it appears the young mother may have had reason to be afraid for her life. She allegedly expressed fears mirroring Savio's (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3868974&page=1) before her mysterious bathtub death.
Savio’s body was found in a dry bathtub and initially ruled a drowning. Since Stacy’s disappearance, her body has been exhumed and further investigation has re-classified her death as a homicide.
What makes Katro’s comments about cremation more chilling, is the fact that friends of Drew Peterson who claimed to have worn a wire to gain evidence about Stacy’s disappearance, stated that when Savio’s body was exhumed, Peterson made a comment that he should have had her cremated (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,390072,00.html). He is considered the person of interest in her murder as well. Peterson maintains he did not harm Savio.
The article quotes Katro as theorizing the interrogation may have been triggered by her correspondence with Anthony "Bindy" Rock, (http://www.wbbm780.com/New-Subpoena-Served-In-Old-Drew-Peterson-Suspensio/1668114)who is a convicted cop killer and was once involved with Drew Peterson during an undercover narcotics investigation. Peterson has claimed he knows nothing about Rock beyond the narcotics bust in 1985 and that he knows Rock “got out on appeal.”
While police and thousands of volunteers have combed the areas around the Chicago suburb hundreds of times in search of Stacy Peterson’s body or clues to her disappearance, Peterson has maintained that his wife ran away with another man, and thus he has never participated in searches for her.
If indeed, there is substance to Katro’s statement about the possibility that Stacy’s remains were secretly cremated, it would mean that whoever murdered her certainly had to have had help with the process of disposal, but if that is the case, nobody is talking.
Nobody, that is, except Thomas Morphey (http://www.wbbm780.com/Peterson-Step-Brother-Tells-His-Story/3991997), stepbrother of Drew Peterson, who attempted suicide after allegedly helping Peterson carry a blue barrel out of his stepbrother's home and into his SUV. Morphey apparently felt that he had aided Peterson in disposing of Stacy's body, and was hospitalized for a drug overdose shortly before her disappearance had been made public.
In the meantime, Drew Peterson, the retired Bolingbrook cop with nearly 30 years on the force, has already begun dating (http://www.examiner.com/x-7077-Chicago-Page-One-Examiner~y2009m4d4-Drew-Peterson-alone-againnaturallyfiance-Raines-jumps-ship)other young women.
