Investigator Opens Tip Line To Help West Memphis 3

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- A former New York Police Department homicide detective is calling on the public to come forward with any information that could help free the men known as the West Memphis Three.

ay Saltpeter helped uncover evidence that led to the exoneration of a man convicted of murder in New York. Wednesday, he was in Little Rock talking about how he hopes to do the same for Jason Baldwin, Jessie Misskelley and death row inmate Damien Echols.

At a press conference he announced he has set up a confidential tip line. It's the same thing he did when he worked on Martin Tankleff's case, a man who was behind bars for 17 years for the murders of his parents before his conviction was overturned last year.

"This little phone was the Marty Tankleff tip line. I received terrific info that people did come forward after many years, too. I'm going to be standing here in a short amount of time and say this is the tip that line freed the three young men in jail," Saltpeter said.

Saltpeter and Soury specifically would like to talk to the man who came into a West Memphis Bojangles restaurant bloody the night of the crime; they believe he may be a witness.

The confidential tip line number is 501-256-1775.

The Arkansas Attorney General's Office declined to comment because of a gag order in the case. (more at link)
