Coal plants provide just over 50 percent of the nation's electricity. They also are the largest domestic source of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, emitting 2 billion tons annually, about a third of the country's total.
-------
Enviromental groups are taking 48+ power plants to state and fed court in 29 states. The article reports 59 plants have already been cancelled, blocked or delayed in an effort by the Sierra Club to fight greenhouse gas emissions.

Big companies and government agencies in Washington would have to measure their contributions to the world's growing greenhouse gases — and share that information with the public — under a proposal announced this morning by Gov. Christine Gregoire.
The plan, the centerpiece of a package of climate-change measures the governor is sending to the Legislature, would be a first step toward regulating and reducing global-warming pollutants by providing a starting point for measuring whether they are going up or down.
In addition, the governor said she is proposing a "green-collar job" program of education and training for industries involved in efforts to address climate change.

Why liquid coal is not a viable option to move America beyond oil.

Mining companies, utilities and politicians promote coal in the name of national security, as an alternative to foreign fuels. With hundreds of years of reserves still in the ground, they're also pushing coal-to-diesel plants as a way to sharply increase domestic production.
The outcome of the fight over coal could determine the nation's greenhouse gas emissions for years to come, said Gregory Nemet, assistant professor of public affairs at the University of Wisconsin.
On Friday, a state panel refused to rescind an air-quality permit it had granted for a plant proposed for the Great Falls area by Southern Montana Electric, despite concerns about the plant's carbon-dioxide emissions. The 250-megawatt plant is projected to emit the equivalent of 2.8 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Isn't it easy to just declare global warming a form of hysteria?
btw, if I go fishing, it's recommended that I don't eat the fish I catch.
There is a new wave of anti-global warming theorists: They blame the rise in temperature on natural fluctuations of the sun. :) Many of these people also believe in the "electric universe".
Whatever. The best I can recommend to anyone is to get an education.

I believe that we have the ways and means to free ourselves from fossil fuels.
Sooooo much wealth to a few is dependent on fossil fuels. Them folks would have to line up for their welfare checks when we finally free ourselves.

Once we are free how will the masses be able to afford heat for their homes, whatever the alternative, it will not be cheaper than coal. What is gained by throwing trillions of dollars into a phony "solution" that even the global warming propagandists would have to admit will change absolutely nothing?

What is gained is that we can still live on the earth.

This really is a matter of life and death. Not some distant future. Our children and grandchildren. I wish it weren't true.
