Murder victim's family describes their emotional year

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - A year ago, Ed and Lucinda Hulit sat home and waited. They waited for their 15 year old daughter to come home. She'd been missing for nearly a week.

That night, their worst nightmare came true. Raina Hulit was dead.

"We go through pain every single day, and I don't wish this pain on any mother," said Lucinda.

The pain has hardly diminished in the year since Ed and Lucinda Hulit's daughter Raina died.

"I think about her all the time. I hurt everyday," Ed said.

"It's torture," described Lucinda.

On a Saturday morning, just before five, 15-year-old Raina, along with her cousin left her South Sioux City, Nebraska home, headed for Sioux City. They left in a friend's car, for a party at the home of 24-year-old Matthew Hettinger.

Raina's cousin Ashley told the Hulits that Hettinger flipped into a drug fueled rampage, got a gun, and began firing.

Raina's body was found six days later, hidden in a wooded area of Stone State Park. Woodbury County prosecutors have charged Hettinger with first degree murder and abuse of a corpse. But Hettinger maintains he's innocent.

The trial, originally set for May, has been continued three times. Now set for February, it will be well over a year since Raina's murder that Hettinger will face a judge.

"I'm frustrated. It's pretty ridiculous that we have to wait and wait and wait," said Lucinda.

Woodbury County attorney P.J. Jennings says delays are inevitable, especially in high profile cases. Still, he knows the emotional toll the wait can have.

"I believe it's hard. I believe it's hard on any family to have to wait, but there are families out there that have waited substantially longer than what will occur in this case," said Jennings.

If the Hulits could say one thing to Matthew what would it be?

'I hope you get life and never get out." "You tore my family apart," answered Ed.

"I'm going to hurt the rest of my life, and I want him to suffer every single day as well," replied Lucinda.

When Matthew Hettinger's trial does start, the Hulit's plan to be in the courtroom each and every day searching for justice and closure.

A memorial for Raina is planned in Winnebago, Nebraska.

This is so sad. I feel so bad for the parents. Their life will be forever changed, and in a lot of ways not for the good. It is too bad this guy does not plead guilty and get on with the sentencing. All he is doing is prolonging the angony the family has to deal with.
I pray that justice will be swift.

When I first joined this site back in Feb of 08, this was the first thread I read. I was so saddened Raina had been killed. So when I was on the ktiv site today, I saw the article and remembered it was about the young girl on the thread I'd read back when I joined HFTM. I am thrilled the slime will be brought to justice next month. This family will never had full closure with a guilty verdict, but afterward they will have relief knowing justice for Raina has reigned. And a small pain felt deep inside them will lose a little of its grip.
