(http://www.ocala.com/article/20090508/NEWS/905089962?Title=Police-searching-for-Silver-Springs-man#) Derek McGivern
Authorities say Derek McGivern was last seen late Sunday night at the Back 40 Lounge located at 15949 E. State Road 40 in the Ocala National Forest.
Officials say McGivern, whose birthday is today, left the bar with a man named Allen Lee Strickland around 10 p.m. and went to a convenience store located at the intersection of County Road 314A and SR 40.
McGivern has not been seen or heard from since. He was last seen wearing blue jean shorts and a white Florida Gators T-shirt.
Deputies have classified McGivern’s disappearance as missing and endangered because it’s highly unusual for him not to come home to his family.
Anyone with any information about his whereabouts can call Inspector Mike Mongeluzzo at 732-9111, Crime Stoppers at 368-STOP, or visit ocalacrimestoppers.com.

Officials look for man missing for a week

Sheriff's officials need assistance finding a 28-year-old Silver Springs man missing since Sunday.
Authorities say Derek James McGivern, 28, was last seen at the Back 40 Lounge at 15949 E. State Road 40 in the Ocala National Forest when he left the bar with Allen Lee Strickland around 10 p.m. and went to a convenience store at the intersection of County Road 314A and SR 40.
He was last seen wearing blue jean shorts and a white Florida Gators T-shirt.
Deputies have classified his disappearance as missing and endangered because it is highly unusual for him not to come home to his family.
Around 11:35 p.m. Sunday, Deputy Gary Skinner noticed a broken passenger's side headlight on a 1997 two-door Chevy on CR 314A and Northeast 14th Street.
The deputy tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver, later identified as Strickland, sped away. There was a pursuit, and Skinner noted in his report that the Chevy sideswiped two parked vehicles before stopping.
Skinner and another deputy conducted a field sobriety test, which Strickland failed. He was transported to the Marion County Jail.
During a search, officials found a white pill identified as Seroquel in his pocket.
Strickland's charges include DUI, for failure to submit to a breath test, and driving while license is suspended or revoked.
Officials also discovered that the vehicle, though not owned by McGivern, is known to be operated by him.
Anyone with any information about McGivern's whereabouts can call Inspector Mike Mongeluzzo at 732-9111 or Crime Stoppers at 368-STOP, or visit ocalacrimestoppers.com.

Welcome Angie.
My prayers go out to you and your family for Derek's safe return.
I have tons of questions for you:
Are Allen Strickland and your brother on a surveilence camera at the store after 10 pm when they left the bar? What time?
Have you seen the video?
Did it seem he was under any duress at the store?
Did they walk into the store together? Did they leave together?
Was there surveilence outside? Were they in seperate vehicles?
Did Allen Strickland know each other prior to or were they only aquaintances at the bar? Were the both "regulars" at the bar, so they would be familiar with one another?
Do you know the approximate age of Strickland?
Did Derek have any "extra cash" on him....i.e. did he just cash a paycheck?
Do you think he had been drinking for the better part of the day? The reason I ask is, if he had, perhaps his lack of judgement may have been impaired.
Strickland's arrest in your brother's vehicle (that he drives) raises tons of questions.
I am just thinking and typing at the same time......hope this makes sense. These might be questions you may want to ask Law Enforcement.
Lots and Lots of prayers sent your way!!!

There are so many unanswered questions. I don't even know where to start. They are now suspecting foul play...why would anyone want to hurt my brother...i don't understand it makes no sense. He is one of the most harmless people you would ever meet. As for strickland guy yeah they have asked him questions. went to give him a polygraph and he lawyered up.....they are starting a land search tomorrow because they have no other leads to follow. how do you tell a 6 year old who's mother is in jail that his daddy may not come home..................i am trying to be strong for my own family but it is starting to break down. I don't know what to say to my mom...how to comfort her. I can barely stand myself.

Wanted to let everyone know that there are no leads still even after the 3 mile land search off 314A where the chase his vehicle was involved in with the Allen Strickland guy. The searched both sides of the highway. Family and friends were able to help and many showed up. My mother and I are very thankful for all those that have been helping in the search for my brother. We are still lost that there are no leads anywhere. no tips to follow. Its almost like my brother has vanished into thin air....I wish someone would just make a phone call and help us out. My mother is trying so hard to stay strong. But this is 3 years in a row something tragic has happened. we lost her dad 2 years ago, he husband was killed in a car accident which she was behind him when he fell asleep at the wheel and hit a tree. She watched the whole thing, pulled him out of the car and knew he was gone. I dont think she will be able to handle loosing a son, he baby at that....i know he is 28 but he is her baby.......I am trying myself to stay strong.

Morning search yields no clues to missing man's disappearance
Published: Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 4:26 p.m.

SILVER SPRINGS – Deanie Johnson and Angie Layerd are eager to find out what happened to Derek James McGivern, who was last seen the night of May 3.
Johnson is the man’s mother and Layerd is his sister.
The women say they’re baffled as to his whereabouts because the 27-year-old father of a 6-year-old son would not leave his family, especially his child, in limbo, wondering where he might be.
“He worships the ground he walks on. They did everything together,” said Johnson of her son and grandson, as she fought back tears while standing in front of the Forest District Sheriff’s Office substation Tuesday morning.
Deputies, along with a number of McGivern’s family members and friends, gathered at the station, just yards from County Road 314A, before launching a search for the missing man.
The morning search was concentrated from Northeast 14th Street Road, popularly called Sand Mine Road, to State Road 40. The nearly three-mile probe was centered in the area McGivern was last seen.
The dense, wooded area was carefully checked by the volunteers and deputies, who came up empty-handed. Officials do not plan on conducting more searches unless a lead takes them there.
Officials say that between 10 and 10:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, witnesses saw McGivern and his friend Allen Strickland at the Back 40 Lounge at 15949 East SR 40. Authorities say there was a disturbance in the parking lot, but no one could say for sure either man was involved, or if they left together.
Around 11:35 p.m., Deputy Gary Skinner noticed a broken passenger’s side headlight on a 1997 two-door Chevy on CR 314A and Northeast 14th Street.
The deputy tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver, Strickland, sped away. There was a pursuit and the Chevy sideswiped two parked vehicles before stopping.
Skinner and another deputy conducted a field sobriety test, which Strickland failed. Officials found a white pill identified as Seroquel in his pocket.
He was transported to the Marion County Jail, charged with DUI for failure to submit to a breath test and driving while license is suspended or revoked.
Detectives think the men left the bar together and that something may have happened between there and the time of the vehicle pursuit. They know Strickland purchased beer at the Kangaroo gas station at the corner of SR 40 and CR 314A. Officials say Strickland told them he was too intoxicated to know whether or not McGivern was with him when he drove away from the station.
Officials discovered that the vehicle, though not owned by McGivern, is known to be operated by him.
“He’s a carefree person. He would walk away from a fight. I don’t know why anyone would want to hurt him,” Layerd said of her 6-foot-1, 200-pound brother.
If he’s hurt, detectives would like to find him. If he’s not hurt, detectives stil want to know his whereabouts.
“We’re doing everything possible to find him,” said lead investigator Inspector Mike Mongeluzzo.
Strickland, according to investigators, is considered a person of interest in the case. He refused an interview request from the Star-Banner.
“We urge anyone who has any information regarding the location/disappearance of Mr. Givern to immediately come forward,” Capt. Tommy Bibb said.
Anyone with any information can call Mongeluzzo at 732-9111 or Crime Stoppers at 368-STOP, or visit ocalacrimestoppers.com.

A member of the public reported finding the shorts, pants, shirt and sneakers near County Road 314A and Northeast 49th Street Road sometime after 4 p.m., according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office. The clothes tested positive for traces of human blood.
Because of poor visibility late Wednesday, searchers – including members of the Sheriff’s Office, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and county Fire Rescue – secured the area overnight and picked up the search Thursday morning.
The next step is to continue the search. Whatever evidence, if any, that is found will be tested, sheriff’s Capt. Tommy Bibb said..
Sheriff’s detectives said earlier that between 10 and 10:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, witnesses saw McGivern, 27, and his friend Allen Strickland, 33, at the Back 40 Lounge at 15949 East SR 40. Bloody clothes, human bones found in search for missing man

OCALA NATIONAL FOREST - Blood-stained clothing items belonging to Derek James McGivern, a Silver Springs man who has been missing since May 3, were found Wednesday afternoon.
The site, near Northeast 49th Street Road, was secured overnight and a search resumed Thursday morning.
On Thursday, officials also found human bones, including a skull, scattered over an area of 50 yards or so. A medical examiner was called to the site.
Officials plan to use dental records and DNA testing to identify the human remains.
According to officials on site Thursday morning, on May 7, a newspaper carrier making early morning rounds saw what he called “drag marks” on Northeast 49th Street Road, a dirt road off of CR314A. He said he shined a spotlight and noticed blood, but didn’t think too much of it in the rural area.
He said when he saw reports in the Star-Banner on Wednesday about the search for a missing man being conducted in that area Tuesday, he called authorities.
When deputies and others arrived on scene Wednesday, they noticed one shoe in a grassy area near Northeast 49th Street Road and then shorts, pants, shirt and sneakers in a wooded area.
The clothes tested positive for traces of human blood.
Because of poor visibility late Wednesday, the searchers – including members of the Sheriff’s Office, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Marion County Fire Rescue – secured the area overnight and picked up the search Thursday morning.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers also were on scene Thursday morning. They are working to determine whether or not McGivern may have been in the vehicle with his friend Allen Strickland during a pursuit by a deputy on the night of May 3. Authorities said there has been speculation among people familiar with the case that McGivern may possibly have jumped from the moving vehicle.
THE DISAPPEARANCE
Sheriff’s detectives said that between 10 and 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, witnesses saw McGivern, 27, and Strickland, 33, at the Back 40 Lounge at 15949 East SR 40. There was a disturbance in the parking lot, but no one could say for sure either man was involved, or if they left together.
Around 11:35 p.m., Deputy Gary Skinner noticed a broken passenger’s side headlight on a 1997 two-door Chevy on CR 314A and Northeast 14th Street.
The deputy tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver, Strickland, sped away. There was a pursuit and the Chevy sideswiped two parked vehicles before stopping, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.
Strickland was the only person in the vehicle when it stopped.
Skinner and another deputy conducted a field sobriety test, which Strickland reportedly failed. Officials found a white pill identified as Seroquel in his pocket.
He was taken to the Marion County Jail and charged with DUI for failure to submit to a breath test and with driving while license is suspended or revoked.
Detectives said they believe the men left the bar together and that something may have happened between then and the time of the vehicle pursuit.

Investigators find human remains in Ocala National Forest
Bones found near clothing believed to belong to missing Marion County man
Anthony Colarossi | Sentinel Staff Writer
11:47 AM EDT, May 14, 2009
OCALA NATIONAL FOREST - Marion County authorities say they've located what they suspect are human remains in the Ocala National Forest -- close to where the clothes belonging to a missing man were found yesterday.
"We have found bones in the same area [as the clothing]," said Marion County Sheriff's Capt. James Pogue. "We have a medical examiner that's on the way out there."
Marion officials continued a search today for Derek McGivern, a man who has been missing for more than a week after he was last seen at the Back 40 Lounge in the sprawling forest.
Late Wednesday afternoon, the Marion County Sheriff's Office learned that a resident had discovered bloody clothing near County Road 314A and N.E. 49th St. Rd, officials said. Detectives and K-9 units arrived at the scene, but weather conditions and the time of day forced them to suspend the search.
Detectives suspect the clothing found does belong to McGivern. It has tested positive for traces of human blood, according to the sheriff's office. The items found include shorts, pants, a shirt and sneakers.
Today's search continues with the Sheriff's Office Field Force team, K-9 units, Marion County Fire Rescue, Florida Fish and Game officials and other volunteers participating.
McGivern was last seen at about 10 p.m. May 3 at the Back 40 Lounge, officials said. The Back 40 Lounge is located at 15949 East State Road 40.
McGivern left that establishment with a man named Allen Strickland and went to the Kangaroo store located at County Road 314A and State Road 40.
McGivern was last seen with blue jean shorts and a white Florida Gator T-shirt. The Silver Springs man is about 6-foot-1 and weighs 200 pounds authorities said. McGivern's 28th birthday was last Friday, according to sheriff's office records.
Check back for more details.

Authorities have located the clothing of a 27-year-old Silver Springs man who went missing earlier this month.
Authorities also found human remains in the Ocala National Forest on Thursday. Dental records and DNA testing will help officials determine whether the remains are those of Derek James McGivern, who was last seen on May 3.
The Ocala Star-Banner reports that last week, a newspaper carrier noticed "drag marks" around the area where the remains were found. He notified authorities after he saw a report about the missing man.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jenifer Fisher says investigators think an animal might have dragged the remains. They found bear tracks at the scene.

MARION COUNTY, Fla. -- Human remains and bloody clothes might bring a week-long search for a missing father to an end.
Investigators said a newspaper carrier spotted drag marks leading into the Ocala National Forest.
Once in the woods, detectives said they found bloody clothes belonging to missing 28-year-old father Derek McGivern and human bones.
Friends are still waiting for confirmation, but they said even the gruesome discovery can hopefully provide some answers about McGivern's disappearance.
"It's horrible," said friend Tina Thompson.
Thompson lives with McGivern and his 6-year-old son. She said he's a dutiful father, and when he didn't come home May 3 and didn't call, she knew something was wrong.
"I was very surprised because he would not not get a hold of his child," she said.
Eleven days later, investigators found McGivern's shoes, socks, shirt and jeans that he had last been wearing in rural Marion County covered with blood. Nearby, crime scene technicians gathered human bones scattered over a 50-yard area, apparently ravaged by animals in the forest.
Investigators said they believe the bones belong to McGivern.
"We're working the case as if it were him right now, because there are so many things that match up," said Marion County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jimmy Pogue.
If it is McGivern, detectives said they don't know what lead up to his death. He was last seen at the Back 40 Lounge with his friend, Allen Stricklan.
A deputy pulled over McGivern's car because of a smashed headlight. Strickland was driving and didn't have a straight story about McGivern's whereabouts.
Police said he told them he was so drunk that he didn't remember what happened to his friend. He said McGivern might have jumped out of the car when police were following the vehicle.
Deputies arrested Strickland and charged him with driving under the influence. He is still a suspect in McGivern's disappearance, now likely death.
Investigators said they're waiting for the medical examiner to identify the bones using DNA and dental records.

MARION COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
The 27-year-old Silver Springs man, missing since May 3, was identified by his teeth. His skull was found last Thursday when volunteers and deputies searched the wooded area off Northeast 49th Street Road.
Also, officials said the clothing found at the site was identified by his family and matched the clothes he was wearing in a photograph.
While the 6-feet-1, 200-pound man’s death is considered suspicious, detectives at this point do not suspect foul play.
McGivern’s family has been notified of his death. His sister, Angie Layerd, said they're devestated.
Layerd said his 6-year-old son is living with his grandparents. She planned to pick the boy up on Friday and spend time with him.
Last week, investigators narrowed their search to the wooded area after a newspaper carrier reported having seen the clothing a week earlier.
Before that, family, friends and deputies searched an area about a mile from Northeast 49th Street Road, looking for McGivern. He reportedly had been in a vehicle being pursued by a deputy on the night of May 3. McGivern’s friend, Allen Lee Strickland, 33, was driving, and told investigators that McGivern had been with him.
However, when the deputy stopped the 1997 two-door Chevy, only Strickland was inside. The deputy’s dash cam video did not show anyone jumping from the car.
As the investigation continues, officials have enlisted the assistance of the Florida Highway Patrol to examine a few scenarios, including whether McGivern may have been in the car, fallen out and been struck by the vehicle.
Officials are also checking into the possibility that McGivern fell out of the car and some type of animal got hold of him. Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Medical Examiner's Office are assisting deputies in the case.
McGivern reportedly was last seen at the Back 40 Lounge, 15949 E. State Road 40, in the Ocala National Forest on that Sunday evening. Deputies said he left the bar with Strickland, and the two went to the Kangaroo convenience store at CR 314A and SR 40.
Among statements Strickland made to investigators, he reportedly said he was too intoxicated that night to remember what happened. On Thursday, he declined an interview request from the Star-Banner.
Layerd said she believes Strickland knows more than he's saying.
"If it was an innocent act," she said, "then why clam up?"
Anyone with information about the case can call Inspector Mike Mongeluzzo at 732-9111 or Crime Stoppers at 368-STOP, or visit www.ocalacrimestoppers.com (http://www.ocalacrimestoppers.com/).

Do not suspect foul play? I find that hard to believe at this stage.
