NORWALK — Police are looking for a 13-year-old Norwalk boy who stole a pick-up truck after writing in his diary that he will harm anyone who interferes with his running away.

Calvin Leon Riley may be armed with a gun and fight or commit suicide when approached, police said. He left Norwalk early Tuesday.

A statewide missing child alert was issued about noon today.

Calvin may be heading to Lake Erie in a white 2003 Chevrolet pick-up truck with license plate ENV 5051. He is 5 feet 7 and 125 pounds. He was wearing tan pants and a white Polo shirt.

Huron County: Armed missing teen believed to be in Kentucky
Updated: 5/13/2009 1:20:41 PM

HURON COUNTY -- Authorities in Huron County say it appears that a missing 13-year-old is in Kentucky. Law enforcement has been searching for the teen because they believe he is armed with a rifle and upset with fellow students and teachers at his school.

Deputies say the teen contacted a friend in Huron County around 10:15 a.m. Based on the call record, deputies say the phone call was placed from Kenton, Kentucky.

Our Gannett-owned sister station in Cincinnati reports the phone call was made from a pay phone at a business near the interchange of I-71 and I-71.

Law enforcement agencies there have been notified in an effort to locate the boy.

The boy attends Norwalk Catholic Schools and based on the nature of the circumstances and because of safety concerns, the schools shut down as a precaution Wednesday.

The 13-year-old was last seen Tuesday night near dusk at the Norwalk Reservoir.

Investigating officers say they obtained a diary belonging to the teen in which he states he will harm anyone who interferes with him.

The teen is believed to be driving a white 2003 Chevy pick-up truck that was reported stolen.

Anyone with information on the teen's whereabouts is asked to contact authorities and not attempt to approach the boy.

The teen was last seen wearing a white shirt, tan pants and is carrying a red duffel bag.

The Norwalk police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and a medical helicopter were being used in the search here.

A hit list and a missing truck are part of the story

The Norwalk schools superintendent says that a threat was made against Norwalk Catholic School, which is not in session.

The public schools are in session and are locking their exterior doors as a precaution. Students there are being kept inside and will dismiss on time today.

According to the Huron County sheriff's office, Calvin Riley, 13, is missing. He is allegedly a student at St. Paul's Jr. High.

Riley didn't return home Tuesday after school. A neighbor's white pickup truck was reported stolen and then found in Kentucky this morning. The sheriff reports that a "hit list" with 33 names on it was found at Riley's home.

Missing Ohio teen arrested in Tenn.

May 13, 2009

NORWALK, Ohio – Authorities say a missing 13-year-old boy who allegedly made threats against teachers and classmates and made a phone call from Walton on Wednesday has been arrested in Tennessee.

Dispatcher Doris Sowards of the Huron County Sheriff’s Office in Norwalk, about 50 miles west of Cleveland, says the boy was taken into custody Wednesday night in Dayton, Tenn. She says he is being held in a juvenile detention center.

Authorities investigating a missing person report filed by his parents found a journal with the names of 33 classmates and teachers who were indirectly threatened. Huron County sheriff’s Capt. Ted Patrick says the threats were not specific.

Authorities traced a phone call the boy placed about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday to a friend back home in the Norwalk suburb of Bronson Township, Patrick said. The call came from a pay phone outside a bar and carry-out liquor store, One Moore Time – formerly Shamrock Inn – in Walton.

The friend the boy phoned was one of his classmates who was not home at the time. The boy left a message saying he was fine and planned to “live off the land” in Kentucky, Patrick said.

The boy left a previous message at 6:22 a.m. from the Columbus suburb of Plain City. His parents told sheriff’s officials they were missing the rifle and that a neighbor’s white 2003 Chevy pickup truck had been stolen. Sheriff’s officials contacted Norwalk Catholic School, where the teen attends classes.

As a safety precaution, Norwalk Catholic School canceled classes Wednesday.

Ohio boy accused of journal threats held in Tenn.

9:41 AM Thursday, May 14, 2009

NORWALK, Ohio — A 13-year-old boy accused of making threats against teachers and classmates in his journal and who police believe left the state with a rifle in a stolen truck was being held Thursday in a Tennessee juvenile detention center, a sheriff's deputy said.

The boy was taken into custody Wednesday night in Dayton, Tenn., after setting off a daylong nationwide search that began in Norwalk, Ohio, about 50 miles west of Cleveland.

The Huron County sheriff's office in Ohio planned to release more information later Thursday, Deputy Joseph Leroux said.

Authorities said Wednesday that officers investigating a missing person report filed by the boy's parents found a journal with the names of 33 classmates and teachers who were indirectly threatened, although the alleged threats weren't specific.

Norwalk Catholic School, where the boy is a student, canceled Wednesday classes as a precaution. The school planned to reopen Thursday.

The boy was last seen Tuesday night around dusk at the Norwalk Reservoir, and authorities believed he took a .22-caliber rifle from his home and was driving a white 2003 Chevy pickup truck stolen from a neighbor.

Authorities said the boy was found with the truck in eastern Tennessee Wednesday evening after he talked by phone with his mother and then called 911 from a store.

"He didn't know where he was," Dayton Police Chief Chris Sneed said Thursday.

Sneed said there was a hunting rifle in the truck. The chief said he was waiting to hear from Ohio authorities about their plans to come after the boy.

Rhea County jailer Fayrene Qualls said the teen was "just tired and wore out."

She said early Thursday that he was sleeping, and she was waiting to hear if a court hearing would be set.

She said the boy is facing charges in Tennessee, apparently for carrying a gun across the state line.

Runaway Norwalk teen denies criminal charges

Calvin Riley, 13, right, is transported to the Huron County Juvenile Detention Center from the Huron County Courthouse on Monday afternoon in Norwalk.

Tuesday, May 19, 2009 9:04 AM EDT

NORWALK ~ Handcuffed at his wrists and ankles, 13-year-old Calvin Riley shuffled into juvenile court Monday dressed in a white T-shirt and tan shorts.

Looking solemn but youthful, Calvin denied all three charges of delinquency he faces for allegedly stealing a rifle and truck, and inducing panic.

Given that Calvin's accused of making it to Tennessee before surrendering to police, assistant Huron County prosecutor Jennifer DeLand told the court she considered him a flight risk and potentially a danger to the public and himself.

DeLand urged juvenile Judge Timothy Cardwell to deny a request to remand Calvin to the custody of his parents.

"Based on the circumstances surrounding these complaints, the state will be requesting Calvin be placed in detention pending the next hearing," DeLand said. "He was located in a different state -- he was in Tennessee. He was located with the vehicle, which it is alleged he stole and in addition he was located with firearms, one of which he allegedly stole as well."

Calvin's attorney, James Joel Sitterly, pointed out his client voluntarily turned himself in to authorities and had no prior run-ins with the law.

"If Calvin's released into his parent's custody, his parents have indicated to me there will be 24-hour supervision of Calvin from now until the adjudication hearing," Sitterly said. "Calvin is certainly willing to go on an ankle monitor."

Calvin's father, Patrick Riley, promised the court he and his wife would diligently monitor their son, never letting him stray from their supervision.

But citing the state's interest in learning Calvin's current mind-set, Cardwell ordered Calvin to remain locked up at the Sandusky Juvenile Detention Center until he undergoes a psychological evaluation.

Also, while reading the charges against Calvin, Cardwell noted that if he were an adult he would face felony-level charges: Inducing panic is a fourth-degree felony, theft of a firearm is a third-degree felony, and theft of a motor vehicle is a fifth-degree felony.

But Calvin faces very different punishments than he would if he were five years older.

If convicted, Calvin's possible punishments include commitment to the Department of Youth Services for a minimum of six months; placement in a community correctional facility for juveniles; placement in a detention center; removal from his home; and mandated community service and educational classes.

Calvin captured national headlines last week after he went missing and authorities said they found his crude diary containing threats against 33 students, teachers and school officials.

Law enforcement officials were particularly concerned because Calvin allegedly stole a .22-caliber rifle and a pickup truck before disappearing May 12. He also had about 400 rounds of ammunition, according to a Dayton, Tenn., police report.

Fearing he might try to act on the threats, school officials shut down Norwalk Catholic School on May 13. Authorities later concluded Calvin's taking of the rifle was not with murderous intent but because he hoped to "live off the land" in Kentucky.

Sheriff's deputies said they traced calls Calvin made to an unnamed person first to Columbus, then to Kentucky.

Calvin stopped running about 24 hours after he was reported missing. He called home from Dayton, Tenn., and told police where to find him, according to the Huron County Sheriff's office.

Sheriff's deputies, who picked Calvin up and brought him home this weekend, said they would know more after interviewing the teenager.

But the interview evidently never took place.

"My client invoked his right to silence," Sitterly said.
