Twenty-five-year-old Rumaldo Moreno of Brownsville is missing.

"And he's never, ever, done that in his life," his sister, Esmeralda Moreno, 26, told The Brownsville Herald Friday, emphasizing that her brother has not before been absent from home.

The young man suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

His sister said that his illnesses keep him close to home and particularly close to their mother, Alma Moreno. "He cares a lot about my mom," Esmeralda Moreno said.

Anyone with information about the missing man's whereabouts is asked to call CRIMESTOPPERS at (956) 546-8477, or family members at (956) 455-0622 or (956) 266-9404.

He is 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs about 280 pounds and has shoulder length black hair. He has dark brown eyes and is light skinned. Moreno is known to carry a black backpack.

According to the alert that the Brownsville Police Department issued Friday, the young man was last seen 3:30 p.m. Monday at Hot Topics in Sunrise Mall.

He was wearing khaki cargo shorts with a green shirt, black sweater, a black beany (KORN) and black sneakers.

A store clerk at Hot Topics said that he was there for a couple of hours and that he said he was going to catch a bus to go downtown.

"He has never gone missing," said his sister, Esmeralda Moreno. "You can imagine how my mom is doing. It's very, very difficult."

Rumaldo Moreno comes from a family of three sisters and three brothers, including his twin brother. "We're a very close family," Esmeralda Moreno said.

The missing man's mother usually drives Rumaldo Moreno to the mall and he calls her when he's ready to go home. "He has memorized her telephone number. He hasn't called. Nothing," his sister said. "It is so weird that he would disappear," she said, responding that the family just doesn't know what to think.

He might walk to the mall, but only occasionally. He also doesn't stay long at the mall. "He can't be around people for a long time," Esmeralda Moreno said, referring to effects from her brother's illnesses. He also tires easily.

Also because of his illnesses, the young man is not very trusting. "He won't go with anyone," she said. "He just doesn't go," Esmeralda Moreno added.

Family members have been passing out flyers, hoping that someone might know something.

Missing man back with family

By EMMA PEREZ-TREVINO, The Brownsville Herald

The details are still sketchy, but 25-year-old Rumaldo Moreno of Brownsville was back home Tuesday and appeared to be physically fine, his family said.

Moreno, who suffers from mental illness, took a long detour home after leaving Sunrise Mall on May 18, the day he went missing.

He is believed to have taken a bus to San Antonio, but ended up in New York, said a family member.

Moreno called his family on Saturday and was returned to Brownsville on Monday.

A young boy, who apparently befriended Moreno at the mall here, called Moreno's family to say that Moreno took a bus to San Antonio. "How he ended up in New York, we don't know," Moreno's sister, Esmeralda Moreno, said. She speculated that her brother might have become disoriented.

Moreno suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and had wanted to report something to the FBI, said Moreno.

His family extended appreciation to everyone who assisted in looking for their loved one.
