I was in the service when I was VERY young. I had been home on leave and was on my way back when I found myself at the railway station in Detroit (we did not fly much in those days and we traveled in uniform to get a better price per ticket). I had my ticket; but very little money for the 3-day trip back to my base in Alabama.

A man came up to me and handed me an envelope - he just said, "This is for you!", and immediately walked away and disappeared into the crowd. When he handed me the envelope, I just automatically took it - it happened very quickly. When I opened the envelope, it contained $30 - in those days, more than enough to buy food and incidentals for my trip - and a note that just said "I was in the service myself and know how short money can be. Good Luck."

I looked all around for the man - I wanted to give the money back - taking money from a stranger was just not something folks in my family did. I never saw him again; but, I think of him often all these years later and try to help people who might need it. He was/is my Angel.

Happy Memorial Day!!!:howdy:

Very nice story, Ex Arkie, and it sure was a lot of money back in the day. A three day trip and little money would make for going a bit hungry if not for that angel. Bless his heart wherever he is.

I believe he had distributed these envelopes many times before. I often wondered if my Angel kept these envelopes in his pocket and when he saw someone he thought might appreciate it, he just went up to that person - just as he did for me! This was the early '50s, so WWII had only been over for a very few years - he was probably a Vet - God Bless Him wherever he is!!

What a great story! Next uniform I run into, I'm gonna pass it on. Maybe just buying their lunch, coffee, dinner, but something!
