I hope there aren't any rivers nearby.

Unfortunately, the party venue is located on the waterfront of Lake Ontario, which is only a short distance from the exit. I'm praying Shane didn't fall into the water. The police have been searching the lake with a sonar gun and so far have found nothing. In this case, no news is good news.

Dang! What a fine, handsome young man. That is the kind they target.

Family of missing York U student offers $5,000 reward

NICKI THOMAS
From Monday's Globe and Mail, Monday, May. 25, 2009 03:59PM EDT

From posters now plastered across downtown Toronto, a missing university student looks out with blue eyes, his mouth cocked in a half-smile.

It's as recent a photograph of Shane Fair as is possible, taken in the hours before he was last seen, sitting alone at the bar following a formal for his York University residence.

His family printed hundreds of posters using the picture, the third set since reporting him missing last Tuesday. The first were black and white and printed from a home computer. The second in full colour, but with Mr. Fair in his Canadian Forces reserves uniform.

Shane Fair's Family Organizes Private Search For Missing Teen

Friday May 29, 2009
CityNews.ca Staff

Nearly two weeks after a 19-year-old York University student disappeared from an end-of-year formal, relatives are organizing a private search.

Shane Fair was last seen on May 16 at Ontario Place, where the dinner and dance were being held. It's believed he missed his last bus home and tried to walk to his mother's residence in the Beach. Because he was dressed up some speculate he may have been targeted by someone who thought he had money.

Family members and friends will begin scouring the Portlands and Leslie Street Spit area at 3pm Friday, with the hopes that they'll at least find a clue as to Fair's whereabouts.

Fair is described as:

19
5'11"
170 lbs.
Short-brown Mohawk hairstyle
The closest police have to a clue is a blue shirt similar to the one Shane was wearing on the train tracks near Bathurst and Front Sts. on Monday.

The 19-year-old was getting ready to begin a career in the Canadian military when he went missing.

Police, in their search, checked the lake for any sign of Fair, wondering if he might have fallen into the water late at night. But so far there's no sign of him.

Anyone with information is asked to call (416) 808-3100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (416) 222-TIPS (8477).
For info on the search, visit the special Facebook page set up here (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?sid=19abc9ace27828df392d429fa0f81c71&gid=78966007726&ref=search#/group.php?sid=26f8e6b2f52904db50f282bd3f3dfb33&gid=102578393311&ref=search).

The reward for information on a missing York University student has been raised to $10,000 as his family continues its widespread search.

Shane Fair, 19, hasn't been seen since he attended a formal dinner and dance at the Atlantis Pavilion at Ontario Place last Saturday.

Search Continues For Missing Military Reservist Shane Fair
Saturday May 30, 2009
CityNews.ca Staff

His parents just want him to call home.

Shane Fair, 19, was last seen at a party near Ontario Place on Friday May 15. Like many classmates at York University, he was celebrating the end of a busy term.

But unlike so many other students, Shane didn't get on a bus heading back to campus.

Instead, it appears that the military reservist vanished.

There's speculation that he may have tried to walk to his mother's residence in the Beach, but became disoriented.

Others suspect that because he was dressed up (pictured above), he may have been targeted by someone who thought he had money.

He's described as:

* 5'11"
* 170 lbs.
* Short-brown Mohawk hairstyle

He was wearing a blue dress shirt when he disappeared and police found one on the train tracks near Bathurst St and Front St. on Monday. However, they can't confirm if it was Shane's shirt.

Police have called off the ground search for the missing teen, but his family and friends haven't given up hope. They'll be out looking again on Sunday.

Video may have captured missing York student

Updated: Sat May. 30 2009 7:05:39 PM

ctvtoronto.ca

The parents of a missing York University student have uncovered video footage that could give police a clue about what happened to their son the night he disappeared.

Shane Fair's family and friends have been taking an active role in the investigation by going to businesses in the area, to ask for surveillance footage that may have captured the missing teen on the night of May 16.

Footage retrieved from a surveillance camera near the Westin Harbour castle captures a man walking east. A short time later a car driving west makes a sudden u-turn and is last seen driving east in the same direction as the man.

The footage is poor quality and it's difficult to determine if the man in the video is indeed Fair.

The teen's friends believe he walked home from a school formal at Ontario Place after missing the chartered bus back to York. Fair's mother lives in the Beaches neighbourhood and those close to the teen say it's not unlike him to make the trek on foot. However, on May 16 he never made it home. He was last seen at the formal.

"We felt strongly that he would take a route that he's walked many times, bicycled all the time, along that route," family friend and neighbour Chris Da Silva told CTV Toronto while going over the footage.

Fair's mother Lisa Malo said she's optimistic the video shows her son.
"The timeline is right, the description of what he's wearing is right and it makes sense for him to be walking east towards the house," she said.
She has given a copy of the footage to police.

In the meantime, another search is being organized by Fair's family on Sunday.

Police called off their ground search for the teen on Friday.

With a report from CTV Toronto's Michelle Dube

Body of York University student found in Lake Ontario
May 31, 2009 1:01 AM

TORONTO — Police have recovered the body of a 19-year-old York University student who disappeared two weeks ago, in Lake Ontario close to where he was last seen.

The discovery was made around 4 p.m. Saturday by an off-duty police officer, who spotted a body in the waters just west of Ontario Place.

Toronto Police have identified the body as that of Shane Fair.

Fair was last seen leaving a party in the early morning of May 16 near the Atlantis Pavilion at Ontario Place. He had been attending an end-of-the-year formal with classmates, but he missed the bus back to campus. There have been no confirmed sightings of him since. His parents and friends believed he might have tried to walk to his mother's house in the Beach.

This is the second body found in Lake Ontario within the last week.

The body of teenager Mason MacPhail, 16, was found near Polson Pier on Thursday. MacPhail went missing two days earlier, after he was escorted out of the club he went to see a concert in.

Police find missing student's body in Lake Ontario

Updated: Sun May. 31 2009 8:41:40 AM

ctvtoronto.ca

A body pulled from Lake Ontario Saturday has been confirmed as that of missing York University student Shane Fair.

Toronto police located the body just west of Ontario Place Saturday afternoon, Staff Sgt. Mike Stones told ctvtoronto.ca on Sunday morning.

Stones confirmed that Fair's family has been notified.

Fair, 19, was last seen on May 16, when he attended a school formal at the Atlantis Pavilions at Ontario Place. Fair's friends initially believed he tried to walk to his mother's home in the Beach neighbourhood after missing the last bus back to campus. However, he never made it there, nor did he turn up at campus.

Stones said investigators cannot yet say what happened to Fair after he left the formal or how he ended up in the water.

The young man's family had held out hope that their son would be found alive, and yesterday released a surveillance video that showed a man walking eastward near the Westin Harbour Castle hotel. The footage was grainy and the family could not say for sure if it was indeed Fair.

Fair was a reserve soldier with the Canadian Armed Forces. He was to begin a training course next week.

I'm really bothered by the victims' physical similarities. The majority are in the same height and weight range, with most having dark hair and blue eyes, from what I've seen. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) There is something eerie about that. Why aren't we hearing about fat, middle-aged people falling into the water and drowning?

In Shane's case, the police had been checking that area since he was reported missing. Why did it take so long to find the body?

IMO, MOO

And it's not just their physical similarities. All promising young men with a bright future, most attending college. Most if not all had left a bar or some other type of gathering where alchohol was served and a large number of people attended. Most had become seperated from their friends or had been kicked out of the bar, had only a short distance to travel home yet ended up in a body of water that wasn't even on their route home.

The recent case of the young man who was talking with the friend (who was driving around looking for him) on his cellphone right before he disappeared haunts me. Him screaming help me. If you had suddenly fallen into a body of water you wouldn't have been able to scream into a cellphone for help. And how does one accidentally go over the embankment to fall into the water?

Sorry but I don't see how I managed to go a half of a century and not fall into a body of water. And believe me when I was younger I was falling down drunk many times and walked large distances and there was always a river or creek nearby yet I never fell into them.

Tigerlily,
Bizzare you would say that. I find many similarities in appearance of the two just found - so close together.
I will go back and look at the others. Although I realize they all have similar qualities, I have not looked at their appearance. I'll check back.
Annalyzer,
Odd that this seems to be happeneing to males and not females. Reasoning would require research if this is truly coincidental.
My personal opininon:
girls usually look out for girls and will reach out before they put themselves in a dangerous situation, whereas guys think that a "drunkard" is funny. They would rather laugh than help - again, MPO!

York U student's body pulled from Lake Ontario

Toronto Star

Police have recovered the body of a York University student who vanished more than two weeks ago, in Lake Ontario close to where he was last seen.

Around 4 p.m. yesterday, a passer-by who spotted the corpse called officers to a bridge at Ontario Place near Lakeshore Blvd. and Exhibition Stadium, police said.

They have identified the body as that of 19-year-old Shane Fair.

Fair was last seen at Ontario Place's Atlantis Pavilion in the early morning hours of May 16. He had been attending an end-of-the-year party with classmates, but didn't board the bus back to campus. There were no confirmed sightings of him after that.

Police don't know how Fair died, or how he ended up in the water.
"That's still a matter of open investigation," said Det. Scott Purches. "We don't have anything conclusive." The body has been taken to the morgue for autopsy.

Police said Fair's body had been in the water for about two weeks.
"In colder, deeper water, (bodies) usually take a month or so to come up. This was pretty quick," said marine unit Sgt. Dave Harlock. Once dead, a body will typically sink straight down, he said. Gases build up in the body over time – a process accelerated in warmer water – and it will eventually float to the top.

Divers had searched the area Friday near where Fair was found. However, a recent rainfall had stirred the lake's floor, turning the water into a muddy, opaque soup, Harlock said. "It was a very slow process ... Visibility at points was only two feet," he said. "What might have happened, some of the boat traffic going through could have stirred up the body. You've got a lot of big yachts going back there."

The area where Fair was discovered was only about 4 1/2 metres deep.
Police had also deployed an underwater robot to probe the bottom of the lake for the missing teen.

Friends and family of the young man, a Canadian Forces reservist who hoped to join the military full-time in June, have scoured downtown repeatedly since his disappearance. They believed he might have tried to walk to his mother's house in the Beach.

Purches said Fair's family wanted privacy. "They were very thankful of the exposure the media brought to the case, but now they just want to be with each other," Purches said.

They had planned another search for Sunday, but called it off late last night, according to a Facebook group website dedicated to the effort to find Fair. People posted tributes on the site as news of the police's find spread.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Shane's family. He was a funny and talented individual and he will be sadly missed," wrote one.

"Sorry to hear the news, my prayers for the family and friends," wrote another.

The body is the second to be recovered from the lake in less than a week. On Thursday morning, a police diver found the body of Mason MacPhail, 16, in a channel off Polson Pier in the east end. The Peterborough boy had gone missing two days earlier after he got into a fight at a concert at the nearby Sound Academy and was ejected from the bar.
