Keith Hill, convicted Tuesday of aggravated sexual assault of a male teenager, said an incident when he was younger might have prompted his aggressive behavior toward the five young white men he's accused of sexually assaulting.

Hill's six-page written statement was introduced as evidence during the sentencing phase of his trial Wednesday.

In the statement, he said that "a white guy in his 40s" knocked on his door and came in his house and tried to touch his "personal" areas. He said he screamed and he ran away.

Hill, who is black, confessed to attacking five young white men in the Baytown area over a period of eight months in 2006, according to the statement, which was given to a Harris County sheriff's detective.

Hill, now 20, described in detail the assaults and talked about praying to God and the devil for instruction. For instance, he said he followed his first victim from where he worked at a Subway. He said he recognized him as a high school classmate. He said that he "fantasized" about having sex with someone he had "power" over.

The statement said Hill "prayed to God" if he should go to the door. He said he later had to decide whether "to choose between a male or a female."

"I decided on a male because it would be less hard on them," the statement said.

Why is this not considered a hate crime? This guy targeted a certain age, race, and gender in his victims.

The case not only spread fear in the oil-refining town of 70,000 people about 30 miles east of Houston but also piqued the interest of those who study the criminal mind because the attacker preyed on men, something of a rarity in the world of crime.

The U.S. Justice Department says one in 33 men in the United States has been a victim of a rape or attempted rape, compared with one in six women. Experts say men are far less likely to report a rape because they fear being perceived as weak.

I thought this was interesting. They talk about "men" and yet iirc, his victims were teens...so what is the different? What age makes the victim a man instead of a boy?
