Teen Cuts Schools Grass

DETROIT - As the Detroit Public Schools make cuts, no one is cutting the grass at one elementary school. It got so bad that one teenager became a Problem Solver, cutting the grass himself.
The lawn was waist-high for adults and head-high for second graders at McFarlane Elementary School near Warren and Schaefer on the west side of Detroit. So, Clifford Conner grabbed the gas can and his mother's mower, He then fired up the six horse, 21 inch cut Briggs and Stratton and began to mow.
Now, it's not even his school, but his brother and sister do attend McFarlane. Clifford wants them to be safe and he cuts the lawn at home, too. This eighth grader just loves a neat and tidy lawn.
"It's just a natural thing to do, and I love doing it. I don't go one day without cutting my grass. If I see a weed, I cut my grass," said Conner. "I like to keep my grass and stuff nice and my flower bed."
Don't think the school doesn't appreciate all this. "The principal... came over this morning and congratulated my son and thanked him and gave him gift cards for McDonald's," said Lapisha Simmons, Clifford's mother.
Clifford says he knows he's making the school safer, and mom knows she raised a good boy. "I wanted to cry this morning... because this is my son and I told him when you do good things and do good deeds, you see the recognition that you get for being a good person," Simmons said.
