Police looking for missing toddler and mother

Story Updated: Jun 1, 2009 at 11:01 PM PDT

PORTLAND, Ore. - Police are searching for a missing toddler who is believed to be with her mother.

According to police, the child, 23-month-old Alexis Arnold, had been living with her maternal grandmother under a voluntary agreement with the child's mother, 19-year-old Tiffanie Rae Lewis. On Sunday, the child's mother unexpectedly took her daughter from a relative's southeast Portland home during a visit.

Detectives do not believe Lewis committed a crime in taking her daughter and said there is no reason to believe she would intentionally hurt the child. However, they are concerned for the girl's welfare due to an outstanding felony warrant for Lewis, as well as her history.

Child's Description

* 23 months old
* 2 feet tall
* 23 pounds

* Brown eyes

Mother's Description

* 19 years old

Toddler reported missing returned; mother arrested

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A toddler reported missing by her grandmother on Tuesday has been turned in by her mother, who was arrested for an outstanding warrant, police said.

Tiffanie Lewis, 19, turned her 23-month-old daughter Alexis Arnold in to Portland Police Bureau on Wednesday night and was booked into Multnomah County Jail on a felony warrant. No other charges were filed against her in the child's disappearance, Detective Mary Wheat said.

Both baby and mother were fine.

Young Alexis had been living with her grandmother under a voluntary custody agreement when Lewis took her on Sunday night.

Lewis did not commit a crime by taking her daughter, detectives said.
