Witnesses said that they saw a man throw the infant from the Miller Street pedestrian overpass, but police said they are not sure if the infant was alive or dead when the man threw it. It appears the child was hit by at least two cars, officials said.

Police said the suspect was taken to a local cellblock. They said that the man was wearing hospital scrubs and is 23 years old.

Police said they are not sure where the infant came from, and they are checking local day care facilities in the area to see if anyone is missing a child.

I have no idea what is going on....people behave like animals (no offense meant to animals) more and more every day it seems. It takes a special kind of evil to do something like this to an infant.

When I read that he was wearing scrubs I thought maybe he got the baby from a hospital?? Can you imagine the horror of the people in the two cars that hit the baby? Bless their hearts!!! :(

A two-year-old boy died when a man threw him from a pedestrian overpass onto a major highway in the Hawaiian city of Honolulu.

Witnesses saw the man, dressed in hospital clothes, hurl the boy off the overpass. He fell nine metres and as later pronounced dead, authorities said.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested.

One or two vehicles may have struck the child, but it was unclear if he died from being hit or from the fall.

Police said there were no reports of a missing child.

Officers are contacting day-care centres and other area facilities to find out where the child came from.

"It's a sad incident. It's something we never wished happened," police Captain Frank Fujii said.

The suspect was a former employee of Papa John's Pizza in Nuuanu. Court documents show other employees requested but were denied a restraining order against Higa after he wrote bad checks for online pizza orders.

Higa was investigated as a possible driver in a three-car race that led to a fatal crash in August 2004, sources said. Higa was never arrested. One man died in the crash.

Police opened a negligent homicide case and turned the case over to the prosecutor's office, which declined to prosecute.

Matthew Higa lives a few hundred yards from where the child was killed. Neighbor Eileen Vail says there were no signs of aggressive behavior. "Matthew does not seem like a violent (person),” said Vail. “He's kind of a shy person. He doesn't seem like a violent type of person at all.”

According to another neighbor, Charlie Ornellas, a young child who lives in an apartment beneath Higa was found by a police officer earlier in the day wandering around the area. "I saw an undercover cop with the baby and he gave the baby to the father," said Ornellas.

It’s not known if the two year old boy is the murder victim, but Vail says Higa would often play with the child. "When the baby sees Matthew he gets all happy and he runs up to Matthew."

We don't appreciate our LE enough. They had to deal with that and then go back to work like nothing ever happened. I'm surprised the suicide rate for LE is not through the roof.

The grandfather of an infant who died after being thrown onto H-1 Freeway Thursday told police who awoke him after the tragedy that the child was outside walking with a neighbor, according to court documents and Department of Human Services records.

According to documents filed by county prosecutors, police responded to a 911 call Thursday of a small child walking in the middle of the road in the area of the Punchbowl area apartment where the family lives. The call came in at 11:12 a.m.

Police sources have said the toddler wandered off from the apartment at some point that morning and was returned to the home by a police officer in the area.

At 11:43, the call came in that a child had been thrown onto the freeway.

This poor baby never had a chance!!! :(
