Tis the season!!!

What do you put in yours? Do you have secret tricks? Unusual ingredients?

I pretty much follow my mom's recipe and secrets since hers is the best ever.

She likes to buy her eggs two weeks in advance. I don't know why and do not do this.

I like to put my warm potatoes in the mayo mustard mixture. The warm potatoes soak up more of the mixture.

I use potatoes, eggs, radishes, celery and onions. That's it. No other carpola in my salad thankyouverymuch.

My dear m-i-l would tweak hers. She'd add diced cucumber or grated carrots. On one memorable occasion she added raisins (they gave the seniors commodities and she'd often have a five pound bag of raisins and you never knew where they would end up.

I do not like my stuff small or diced. I like it chunky....except for the onions. I hate the onion breath.

Now...tell me about yours.

Lost indie, I LOOOOOOOOVE a homemade potato salad but I only make one about every two years because it is so much work! Like you, though, the simpler the better. Just the very basics.

Now my mouth is watering!

A friend of mine brought a potato salad to a party one time and it was soooooooooooo good, sorta "different" but not outlandishly so. I asked her what her secret ingredient was and she said she added some balsamic vinegar to the mayo mixture. Oh I loved it.

Haven't made potato salad in years but ingredients were potatoes, onion, eggs, pickles, pickle juice, Miracle Whip and mustard and salt, pepper and paprika. Think that is all.

Now you've got me hungry for some too.

Well, I'm a mama's girl too. I've tried other "recipes" over the years but have never liked any as well as my mother's way of doing it.

BTW, indie, I've read that older eggs peel better when hard boiled so maybe that's why she bought the eggs early.

I use, potatoes, onions, eggs, finely diced celery and sweet relish. I make the dressing with Miracle Whip and apple cider vinegar sweetened with sugar. I do mash the potatoes before adding everything else, but just enough so it's easier to mix in the salt, pepper, celery, relish and onions. I add the Miracle Whip mixture and stir to distribute well, then I add the mustard... just a dash ... no yellow potato salad here. Once the mustard is well distributed I add the diced hard boiled eggs. Adding them last like this means they don't get too mashed up with the mixing process.

I definitely agree with mixing everything while the potatoes are still hot. In fact, it's right after it's made that I usually sneak myself a small bowl and eat it warm.

ETA, after reading anna's post I remembered.... I do sprinkle the top with paprika and usually lay some eggs cut in quarters around the rim too.

I love potato salad and make it quite often. I use the same things the rest of you do, but my oldest daughter puts green olives in hers, too. Good!

Celery was an ingredient I used too now that I think about it.

I prefer to have only celery added to the potatoes, Dukes mayo and mustard.
If having company I will add sweet or dill relish and put deviled eggs around the plate. With an olive on top of each egg. I like a little Worcestershire in my deviled eggs.
I think everyone in the South puts paprika on top.

Sweet pickle relish in potato salad????

:smiley_aasg::eek::puke::a1chic::madranting94dp:

I do not like sweet pickle relish at all.

DH made our salad while I napped so I didn't get the first warm bowl. I'm still waking up so I will try it later...

I've heard of it in potato salad but I wouldn't use it. I do, however, use sweet pickle relish in tuna salad as well as egg salad.

My freinds recipe, instead of mayo....she uses ranch dressing.

My recipe: I just add mayo, mustard, dill relish, onions (chopped or diced), boiled eggs (chopped) , salt & pepper.

I use same ingredients for Macaroni salad too.

ETA: My aunt adds black olives to hers.

:0t31: This is so funny to me because my hubby feels the same way about sweet pickle relish. When we were first together I asked him if he wanted some for his hot dog and I heard 10 minutes of how nasty it is. :45024:

BUT, he LOVES my potato salad. I just never told him what all goes in it. (I don't use much SPR anyway.)

You guys have made me hungry for potato salad. I think I'll go put some taters on to boil for tonight.

My DH likes it with a little zing, so I add a little horse radish to it. Good.

I boil my potatoes until they are tender but still chunky, drain, sit in freezer until they are cold, not frozen. Add mayo, Hot dog relish with mustard and eggs. If a family member likes onion I add onion to a individual dish, I do not add onions to all of it.

Never heard of this before so I did some googling. There is also a hot version of the Loaded Potato Salad. They both get rave reviews.

The very first time we had a cookout together and she made the potato salad, she told me what she put into it, I was a little skeptical but it was very good, although it wouldn't be what I would eat all the time but would definately eat it occasionally. I guess I am just spoiled to My Mama's/My recipe.

I use chopped "Claussen" kosher dill pickles instead of sweet pickles or relish.

I'd never even HEARD of using dill pickles in potato salad till a friend brought some to one of our cookouts. She brought a small jar of dill pickle relish and put some in part of the potato salad she had made 'cause her SO liked it like that. I'd never even noticed the jars of dill relish in the stores either. :shrug1:

Haven't made potato salad in years, but, reading this thread makes me want to stir up a batch. Always made it from leftover mashed potatoes and haven't made those either. )))))
